This was touched on in the other thread but he actually kicked ass while he was here. The Sox won the division by only two games that year, and there was no wild card so who knows what happens without him? It's not his fault Lou Gorman hung onto Scott Cooper and traded Bagwell.
Ahem...that's All Star Scott Cooper™ to you, squire.

Another non-qualifier as he played 21 games in 2000 and 14 in 2001, but boy I did hate me some Izzy Alcantara.

And if you want to see a truly despicable lineup top to bottom, check out this box score: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2001/B08250TEX2001.htm

Offerman, Bichette, Hillenbrand, DLew, Lansing, B-H Kim, Urbina plus a myriad of other unlikeables.

I believe you have the wrong Kim since BH Kim was traded for Hildebrand. It is amazing how many of the Red Sox in that game suffered tragic or strange outcomes. Rod Beck and Frank Castillo are deceased, Urbina was tried for murder, Jose Offerman was convicted for assault and Jurasic Carl had child abuse allegations lodged against him. This is not even including the bad personalities of Lansing, Hildebrand or Bichette plus the "manager" Joe Kerrigan. Simply an unlikable team.
What was your problem with Darren Lewis? I realize he sucked as a player but it was not his fault that the management over played him. Personally, I thought he was one of the few likables on the team along with Brett Saberhagen, Hideo Nomo, Normar and Pedro.

Boy, was there some range in that OF that day: Bichette in LF, Trot in CF, and Yummy in RF.
Also, this is well-detailed:
Carl Everett attempted to go to 2B when a
pitch got away from Ivan Rodriguez; however, Chris Stynes did
not run to 3B and Everett had to return to 1B; he dove in
head-first but was tagged out;

don't remember if this was more on Everett or Stynes, but it's got nothing on that time Everett ended a game by getting thrown out at third trying to advance on a potentially game tying SF.

Has my memory gotten fuzzy? I remember Wells as being kind of OK, and about what was expected at that point in his career, and not as much of a total dick as I thought he'd be. I get he gets hate for being a long time yankee, obviously, but I didn't think he was all that much of an issue here. It could be my old age playing tricks on my memory...
This is my impression of Wells. He wasn't great, but he was serviceable. Going from rooting for Pedro to him was rough. But I didn't hate his tenure here as much as many of the other players mentioned.

As for Smoltz, I have a hard time hating him. Yeah, he sucked something terrible, but it was more sad / disappointing than infuriating to me. He was such a stud for so long that I just kept hoping he'd get it back.

Early on in my fandom, but I remember hating Ed Sprague something fierce. His stats with the Sox post-acquisition really seem to drive home how terrible he really was. The cherry on top of a very disappointing 2000 season, though my ire for him is probably a bit irrational.

Edit: Elated to see that he's been mentioned 3 times prior to my posting this.

Another from the 2000 season:

Steve Ontiveros. We used him to start the 2nd game of a double header in September that year and I don't think he got out of the first inning.

Yeah I was at that game. Goddamn that sucked. For a second I was celebrating because the Sox had tied it. Then realized what happened.

I know he was technically here for a year and a half but he was hurt most of the time so I am counting it as one year....Carl Crawford. I literally hate everything about him, from his crappy play to the fact that SoSH reached out to him and he couldn't be bothered to give us the time of day but has no problem trashing everything about Boston even to this day. Douche.

Is he the worst multi-time all star ever? There can't be too many guys (hitters anyway) with a career WAR of 6.2 to make two all star games.
He's not even the worst Boston two-time all-star. A couple of 5 time all stars on this list and a couple of 4 timers as well.

Here's the list:
Hal Smith, C, STL, 1.9 WAR, AS in 1957 & 1959
Jim Finigin, 3B, KCA, 3.2 WAR, AS in 1954 & 1955
Rollie Hemsley, C, SLB-CLE-NYY, 3.4 WAR, AS in 1935, 1936, 1939, 1940 & 1944
Don Mueller, OF, NYG, 3.7 WAR, AS in 1954 & 1955
Jim Hegan, C, CLE, 3.8 WAR, AS in 1947, 1949-1952
Birdie Tebbetts, C, DET-BOS, 4.5 WAR, AS in 1941-1942, 1948-1949
Emil Verban, 2B, STL-PHI, 4.9 WAR, AS in 1946-1947
Leo Durocher, SS, STL-BRO, 5.0 WAR, AS in 1936, 1938, 1940
Mickey Owen, C, BRO, 5.3 WAR, AS in 1941-1944
Dante Bichette, OF, COL, 5.3 WAR, AS in 1994-1996, 1998
Hal Wagner, C, PHA-BOS, 5.7 WAR, AS in 1942, 1946
Burgess Whitehead, 2B, STL-NYG, 6.0 WAR, AS in 1935, 1937
Bruce Edwards, C, BRO-CHC, 6.0 WAR, AS in 1947, 1951
Shea Hillenbrand, 3B, BOS-TOR, 6.1 WAR, AS in 2002, 2005

Robert Five as a manager although Joe (one way fits all) Kerrigan really sucked for a part season.

Eric Gaggedme wins the part season award

Despite serving two years Matt Dung was a guy I thoroughly hated.
I also truly disliked the season that Edgar Rentedrhea (as in diarrhea or
gonhorea) had here. Perhaps really disappointed is more accurate.

Javy Lopez
Which one?
I'm assuming he means the catcher they acquired from Baltimore. I hated Javy Lopez before they got him and he did nothing to change that when he came over.

Mike Remlinger was a guaranteed rally-producer for the opposing offense. I want to say his ERA with Boston was somewhere in the 40s at one point and never got much lower.

Gagne was a huge disappointment, but wasn't he also hurt?

Kason Gabbard was pretty useless outside of a couple starts. Jason Johnson was horrific. Royce Clayton barely did anything but his "I ain't got my taco" bit was worth the acquisition alone. Do we count a guy like David Pauley? How long was Brandon Lyon here?

I think Remlinger is my pick. Gagne was awful, but he did get some saves. Remlinger never got a single big out that I can recall.

Larry Bigbie would have been, though.

Craig Hansen (was he around more than one year?)
Gammons talked him up as MLB ready when he was drafted, and he came up that first September in 2005 and looked like a god in his debut outing (2 filthy Ks on 4 swinging strikes, and a weak popout to SS). Papelbon came in the next inning and gave up a double and a HR before settling down and K'ing 2.

Craig spent most of 2006 with Boston, 2007 in Pawtucket, and much of 2008 in Boston again before being traded.

Does Allen Craig count, or do you get Red Sox service time while being the second highest paid player in AAA behind another candidate for this dishonor, Rusnay Castillo (who at least may someday. ,still be an expensive 4th outfielder.

Yes, the catcher. I never saw someone who seemed so disinterested in playing for the Red Sox. And I use the term "playing" loosely. He was godawful.

Kevin Jarvis was pretty bad too.

You could have just stopped at "playing," as he was done after that year - his last MLB appearance was in a Sox uni on 9/2/06. He was literally playing out the string. Didn't he try to fight that trade too? I remember it being a bit tumultuous since the Sox were dealing from a position of desperation.

I was quite disappointed that we never got to see a Javy Lopez battery. The two never played together although they were teammates on the 06 team.
On the larger point, I cannot really rationally hate guys like Jason Johnston or Kevin Jarvis who tried hard but had no talent. I still remember Johnson pitching with the diabetes packet around his waist. Hard to hate a guy like that.

I recall a day when the outfield L-R was Kevin Mitchell, Troy O'Leary and Jose Canseco. In Sky Dome of all places, you know to really take advantage of all of that speed on the turf.

Mitchell didn't do much in his 27 games here, but a .798 OPS probably keeps him off this list.

In 1952 Frank Baumann received a $90,000 signing bonus from Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, who nicknamed him "Beau". Hands down, Frank Bauman to this day was the biggest schmuck to ever put on the Red Sox uniform.

What's odd about Mitchell is that he was traded to Cincy for zilch at the deadline, despite that 0.798 OPS.

Ah, the "good old days" when real stats like RBI were the measuring stick. He only had 13 RBI and a paltry 2 HR in 46 games, so clearly he was valueless.

Not one of Duquette's finest moments, though admittedly not one of his worst either. I'm guessing the prize return was Brad Tweedlie. He was having an odd season as a closer in High-A at the time (29.2 IP, 11 saves, 6.67 ERA), but he did have a really good finish for the Sox affiliate in Sarasota (11 games, 7 saves, 0.79 ERA) but was never good enough to get out of AA in the next three years before they cut bait and his career ended in Japan.

Meanwhile, Mitchell slashed .325/.447/.579 in 37 games for the Reds.

Why the heck you even bring up Kason Gabbard? As mentioned above, he put up an ERA + of 128. The exact opposite of what this thread is supposed to be. Try to pay attention next time.

Jose Canseco was probably the only person I ever booed on a regular basis while wearing the uniform. I hated that dude so much.

I have zero hatred for the fella (especially since the poor guy got killed in a bar), but Ivan Calderon went from all-star caliber in 1991 to absolute nothing in 1993. I was really excited when they got him.
Total aside, but Jesus that name brings up memories. That was right when the Jerky Boys were big and my friend and I always used his name when we made prank phone calls.

The thread is supposed to be about your "least favorite" Red Sox player of short duration. Players can have good stats and still be disliked by somebody

I think there was a game they actually had Greenwell in CF with Canseco and Mitchell.

Mitchell was enormous that year, very overweight. He was hurt off and on most of the season as I recall.

I remember being pumped that the Sox signed Mitchell. I was a big fan of his when he played in San Francisco.

He had to be up there for most teams played for a former MVP.

Bartolo Colon ranks pretty high. Quit on the Sox in 2008 going into the playoffs. (Quit on the White Sox the next year, too. But the energizer bunny has nothing on him)

Bobby V. and it isn't even close. At least with Gagne, you had that moment where you hoped and even expected he would do well. I mean, his name means WIN in French! But Bobby, he was despicable before he arrived, despicable while he was here, and is despicable still today.

He had a batting stance so ugly that it was painful to watch. I think Leyritz was the least aesthetically pleasing player of all time.
