Seriously, media relations doesn't have to be this difficult. We know of nothing happening that would have forced the team to botch this announcement. If it had to be today, do it with class by Bloom in person/on Zoom, and so the players could properly send him off in person. Why was this timing/handling necessary, like they just decided to do this 10 minutes ago?

Putting aside how it was announced, this is the least surprising move of the season. Roenicke was always just a caretaker manager, particularly once Covid hit.

I am not on the Alex Cora bandwagon. Time to move ahead. This isn't 2018 and you can 't go home again. We are getting into Steinbrenner/Billy Martin territory.

Perhaps something happened this morning that made the decision easy for Boston, one that wasn’t going to be made today but made and announced this next week.

I wonder what former TB coach gets the job?

One aspect of Cora would be Raffy seemed to gel with him, he might need his guidance to reach his full potential.

If Bloom wants his guy, so be it

I’m all for Cora coming back. He has a great relationship with Devers, his role in the Astros scandal has been shown to be greatly overblown, and the players like and respect him.

We’re overdue for another major scandal, so I’ll take a shot in the dark. Roenicke was given orders to tank the last week or two of the season, and to “rest” all the good players but refused. After a falling out with Bloom, he was shitcanned.

Result: Bloom suspended one year, Sox lose their first round pick next season and get fined a ton of international pool money.

Sure you can say Bloom should hire his guy, but if Cora were a FA with out any baggage I’d bet he would be number on a guy like Blooms list.

So, apart from Cora, who are some names we might see connected to the Sox? I have no idea who some up and coming managers may be.

Agreed. The separation looked PR-driven in the face of some gale winds. Now that they've subsided, there never really was any diminishing of respect between Cora and the Red Sox, so a reunion isn't out of the question. Frankly, I think he's proven himself to be a better manager than anyone we could hire, at least, anyone without substantial risk attached. Hiring him is the low-risk move - even if having Mookie and the 2018 roster would make anyone look good, he got absolutely everything possible out of that team and then managed borderline Tito-esque in the playoffs. That is hard to replace.

Dude's a self-admitted cheater, across two clubs. . .but a very affable one, no doubt.

The Sox can and should hire someone else.

edit - verb dropping.

Hensley Meulens got a lot of buzz last time. As I recall, he had some strong connections with the Mets, but maybe that's reduced if they sell?

This is a tough situation for me. The Astros situation was extreme, Cora played a role, and regardless if he was hung out to dry or not, was involved in a really bad situation. The stuff with the Red Sox though was nothing that every team in MLB wasn’t doing, and I think that has been wildly overblown “spygate” style. Either way, he paid the price with his suspension and lost wages.

With all that said, there is nobody in MLB that doesn’t like and respect Cora, and clearly his managerial skills and player interpersonal skills are elite.

I would be 100% fine with Cora coming back. I also will be 100% fine with Chaim picking some unknown Tampa coach who will undoubtedly make a great manager.

Are we really considering the Red Sox’ communication with the video replay room in 2018 to be cheating or have I forgotten some infraction involving Cora prior to banging the can slowly in Houston? If we are really considering the Red Sox’ communication with the video replay room to be cheating, the organization will have to go outside of Major League Baseball to find a candidate that adheres to such pure and pristine standards.

I'm sure all the members of the 2017 Dodgers, who were completely pissed about the Astros sign stealing hear the name "Alex Cora" and just sigh and gently melt and say. . ."Well, except for Alex Cora, of course!"

Yes. Point taken. The Dodgers likely hate him. More broadly speaking, he has always been very well liked by everyone. I doubt that has changed much. He’s a good guy and a great manager who made some shitty decisions was my point.

The Astros, with Cora, cheated an entire season and in the world series itself. The next year he did something similar with the Sox, casting a shadow on their magnificent 2018 season. I'm sure we can find someone who didn't manage to stick his foot quite so deeply in it, and smear it all over the lobby.

People wonder why the country's going to hell; either we have standards or we don't.

It’s a huge turnoff.

My allegiance to the laundry is permanent but on any given day I’m just all that less interested in tuning in to watch a team run by (and increasingly represented on the field by) people that aren’t really like able.

I'm having a hard time summoning any outrage over today's announcement. The Boston Red Sox organization 'did right by' Ron Roenicke by giving him the managerial job when they could have (and maybe should have) asked him to step down along with Alex Cora in the wake of the video scandal - as the veteran presence in the dugout alongside Cora, it is certainly arguable that he should have been more aware of what was going on and told the players to knock it off. Instead, he got a chance to manage this team and while the roster he was handed was greatly flawed, I have a hard time distinguishing any added value that Roenicke brought over any other replacement-level manager. The bottom line for me is that I'm glad Bloom and company are moving on - at least one Boston sports columnist was opining this weekend that Roenicke should be given an opportunity to manage a presumably more talented roster and I'm glad that Chaim is having none of that.
