This makes sense and maybe Cora is Chaims guy but he should be picking his own manager. The role of the manager in modern baseball is basically to be an extension of the FO ob the field. That requires the GM gets along really well with his manager.

Yes, this was actually the decent way to do it. Roenicke wasn't just the Manager for this screwy season, he was the Bench Coach on the historic 2018 team. Let him say goodbye and enjoy his swan song.
And after the game he gets to have a goodbye press conference without it being a shock, and the team announcers can talk about him during the game so the fans will be prepped for it. This is how teams do this, it's not a slap in anyone's face.

Doing it before the game gives him a chance to say goodbye to everyone in person.
Agreed. I think some posters are taking an assumption as fact

If they let him go tomorrow, people would be pissed, because he didn't have a chance to say goodbye to his players and staff

No winning with this crowd

I really don't remember all this hand-wringing when they did this to Eddie Kasko.

Why did you want him wacked last Tuesday? What was so special sbout last Tuesday?
He’s saying RR should’ve been allowed to finish the season, and Bloom presumably isn’t working tomorrow, so make the announcement on Tuesday.

As I said above, I’m skeptical the FO planned to make the announcement like this. If the intent was to make the announcement this weekend, there were more graceful ways to do so.

Bloom's been pretty negative on the Cora idea, there doesn't seem to be much Tek talk, and we missed our window on Baldelli for the next while. So those hoping for a "fresh face" seem likely to get your wish.

From the AP article on Boston.com:

(Roenicke) was not given an extension on the one year he had remaining on the contract he had signed as a bench coach — fueling speculation that Cora could be welcomed back after serving his penalty.

The Red Sox dismissed such suggestions.

“Since we parted ways with Alex, we were clear that that was the result of his role with the Astros. That’s still the case,” Bloom said after Cora was cleared of cheating with the Red Sox. “All the reasons that we parted ways with him then are still the case.”

That doesn't sound like a guy looking to rehire Cora.

FWIW, Kevin Cash is under contract through 2024, with an option year. He was making a million a year on his previous contract, and presumably he got a raise when he signed the current one but I can't find details on how much.

Thank you Ron Roenicke, winner of the MLB's Good Soldier Award for managing through a no-win situation that was 100% not of your making.

I may have missed it, but I did not see a "Let's talk about the manager" thread in 2020. So he does deserve credit for not being noticed, which is an underrated part of being a manager. The team would have lost nothing by waiting until Tuesday before making the announcement, so not sure why this was announced the way it was. But I am willing to wait a couple of days before passing judgment; there could have been a media leak.

While I don't interpret Bloom's statements as outright rejecting the rehiring of Alex Cora, I do believe Bloom will be given license to interview multiple candidates and pick the one he wants. It could be Cora (cannot rule it out), which I would be OK with. But I'm equally OK if Bloom decides it's best to go in a different direction as well.

Hopefully its Cora. Yeah, he was part of the Astros scandal. He was cleared of anything similar in Boston though, and obviously the players liked him and responded well to him as a manager. Not sure who is out there that is a better fit.

Bloom has not openly endorsed bringing Cora back. I'd prefer the Sox move on with Bloom's selection and not have any Cora baggage hanging around the team in 2021 and beyond. Bloom likely already has a short list which has been vetted with Sox management.

The Sox handled Roenicke's split better than the thread title handled splitting an infinitve. ;)

I think it would have been inappropriate to do so during Roenicke’s term and during the suspension

Of course it would. But I wasn’t referring to a time when RR was still the manager. In the short time since the he was terminated Bloom could have indicated Cora was under consideration as are several candidates. But he went the other way.

It's barely been 24 hours since the announcement about Roenicke. And technically Cora is still under suspension. I wouldn't read into anything Bloom has said or not said as far as potential managerial hires. There's no benefit to name checking anyone at this stage, particularly given that many likely candidates are still employed by post-season teams.

That said, I'd rather he do a full and thorough search for a new manager and hire his guy, and not re-hire anyone from the past few years.

I wonder if GMs are even allowed to talk about suspended types in that way? (And if they are, it seems unwise to me).

I assume that Bloom will treat Cora like any other candidate (assuming Cora wants to come back) - someone to consider and evaluate but not a lock by any means. Which is how it should be.

Easiest tell/sign that its going to be Cora.... We get to the WS and there is no news/leaks about them hiring another manager... Since the Sox cannot even talk to Cora till after the WS...

Still not terribly excited about Cora. Let's take the time to talk to all the above. In general, people want to go back to "feel good" times. You can't always do that. Usually it's better to look ahead in sports. So much has changed since 2018 & 19.

I have to believe that Bloom has a list of candidates prepared and ready to go. And I have to believe that just about any current assistant that gets contacted to interview for the vacancy will jump on it unless they have no desire to live in Boston. If Bloom finds someone who he thinks can be the best fit for the job, he should hire him. Cora should just be considered one of several candidates.

What is the reason for the ban on talking to Cora? Is it just formalism that "suspended is suspended" or something?

It seems kind of stupid. There is an end date to his suspension. He's not under any investigation. Maybe, theoretically or something, he's on probation and it could be extended, but all the reasons you suspend someone are being served. He's not being paid, he's not managing, he's not doing any baseball activities. I understand that you cannot hire someone until they have no longer been suspended. But to talk to them about possible employment when they are no longer suspended? I guess I could be convinced but it seems stupid.

One of the terms of suspension is zero contact with anyone in the game. So maybe it's not that Bloom and any other GM is adhering to some "formalism", maybe it's Cora isn't picking up the phone even if they do call. They've got nothing to lose but Cora likely does. It's probably a silly analogy, but when I was a kid, if I was grounded, I couldn't talk to or see my friends. They could certainly call my house all they wanted, but I couldn't answer, even if it was to make plans for the day after my punishment ended. Because maybe just by talking on the phone, I'd be extending my punishment by a few more days.

Besides, if Cora is their man, then what's the harm in waiting until the second after the World Series ends? It's not like he's going to get snatched out from underneath them. If they can't talk to him, nobody can. Interview everyone else in the meantime and know that Cora's there as a fallback if they don't like anyone well enough.

Yeah, I guess viewing it as a punishment it makes sense to tell Cora that he can't do anything related to baseball. It just seems a bit weird -- not even sure what it really accomplishes in the long run if he's not actually added to the club or doesn't do any baseball stuff. But since nobody can talk to him you're right that it doesn't really make any real world difference unless the Red Sox lose someone because they are waiting to talk to Cora.

This sucks. The team can't talk about Cora; the press asks anyway, and then makes the non-answers into the story.
