I was surprised how surprised I was hearing the news knowing that this should not be surprising.
Honestly though, its too bad. He tried hard in the off season to lose weight, and came to spring training looking in good shape. But that couldnt make up for his lack of plate discipline and sudden ability to not know how to field a ball.

You know, I've always found it hard to muster up the level of personal animus a lot of other folks around here have toward him. But this is absolutely the right thing to do for the team. Hope he can get his conditioning in a place where he can make another go at it somewhere, and, if not, I hope he enjoys getting orca-fat on John Henry's money.

Damn shame. Seriously, there is no joy in watching a guy with this much invested in him be kicked to the curb. It's the only place for him now, but it's a damn shame.

I am guessing Holt will be activated and will get the majority of bats at third and Lin will become the super utility person. Or will Holt stay the super utility person and Lin will get the majority of bats?

Have to give major kudos to the FO/Owners for having the balls to do this. Classic definition of a sunk cost.

Even if he has recovered sufficient conditioning, he has not recovered the skills required to even play at replacement level.

I, also never quite understood the animus leveled at him - and wish him success in his future endeavours.

Among the useless contracts they have had drawing the ire of New England fans, at least he didn't seem like a bad guy.

That's all I can muster.

Yup.

So in the past two days, Peralta and Sandoval have been offed, leaving only four (?) options for third base. I assume this means Devers is en route to the bucket as we speak.

It's a shame. Sandoval went from pretty good to completely useless pretty quickly. Some folks predicted this from Day 1 and they were right.

Sigh.

Holt will mostly likely remain in the minors until late next week, as he has until the 20th for his rehab assignment.

After that, I would expect that Holt gets the vast majority of the at-bats and innings at third, with Lin spelling him, Pedroia, and Bogaerts (in that order) 3 days a week. Marrero goes back to Pawtucket, where he can resume torturing @Cuzittt

So Devers to AAA now?
After Holt is activated from the DL, that would make sense. So just a few more days.

People don't get the animosity? For better or worse he was viewed as a guy who didn't care about his conditioning, that caused injuries, may have hurt us from signing/trading for other guys, and he had the balls to play in Instagram in the middle of a game.

I mean, he seemed like a nice guy, and there are certainly athletes worthy of more hatred than him, but I certainly understand people disliking him.

What a disaster of a deal.

Honestly, when you go back and look at his numbers, then look at his body, this was incredibly predictable. One of those times when the statistics and just common sense really matched up.

And they still gave him a ton of money out of desperation.

He "liked" a photo while he was taking a shit. That one was a bit overblown.

Surprised guys are saying they'll stick with Lin over Marrero. Lin seems like a guy is due for a major regression. While Marrero will never be confused with Boggs, I think he is more of a known quantity with tremendous rep at 3B and SS.

Made my day. Hated watching him, almost as much as Renteria. A Pro Athlete that is fat, and cannot field or throw. Disgusting. If he is a nice guy, good for him, he is certainly rich now, go stuff your face.

He tried hard in the off season to lose weight, and came to spring training looking in good shape.
But he did this every year with the Giants. Every. Year. The Sandoval-loses-weight story was the West Coast equivalent of the Manny-is-late-for-ST story: guaranteed easy copy for beat writers.

How the Sox thought he was going to keep the weight off as he aged - never mind how they thought he'd stay as spry on D and maintain his bat speed as he aged - remains a complete mystery to me.

what other athletes have gotten caught in social media liking a picture of a woman they were hoping to sleep with that night during a game?

It's like saying "oh whatever his belt snapped off while he was swinging. It was overblown"

It's the optics of everything. I like pictures of people all the time while I'm in the bathroom. But I'm not a professional athlete during the game.

Fangraphs put Carl Crawford's value while with the team at $1.9MM. They put Sandoval's at -$20.6MM. That's negative value. And they don't have a team just taking over his contract. Has there but a bigger bust in the history of the game, at least in terms of money spent on zero value?

But - the thing is, he never much cared about his conditioning before he was signed by the RedSox. From his own point of view he was a successful fat major league player. It's not like he busted his tail to be succesful, signed the big contract and then went to seed. Its not his fault the the RedSox gave him a stupid contract. There should have been no surprises here.

And, to his credit he managed to get himself into a reasonable facsimile of decent playing shape.

Well, yeah, it's known that he can't hit: .487 OPS at AAA in 400 PAs last year. That's kinda hard to do.

When they signed him, he was fat and *could* field and throw. His decline was inevitable, but I expected them to get 2-3 useful years out of him. When it was obvious his body wouldn't let him play, he did something about it and still couldn't play. I've got no beef with the guy, beyond not wanting shitty player around. And I get no satisfaction beyond that. YMMV.

I'd like to have the money. But done at 30 probably isn't fun.

Having his belt snap off mid game because he was so out of shape is fair game. It affects his performance, which sucked. Liking a picture of a pretty girl real quick is a nothing thing. He didn't fight the punishment or anything, either. He said he totally understood why it's against the rules and accepted it. It really was not a big deal. It's some soap opera celebrity gossip bullshit.

Everything else is totally fair game. There's plenty to dislike about him without that.

Yes, the Giants would only owe the minimum. This is absolutely 100% happening.
I really hope that's where he ends up. My fear (paranoia) is that the Yankees pick him up and he is suddenly reborn, as we've seen happen with a number of presumably washed-up vets over the years. Highly unlikely, but fears are always rational . . .

But the known quantity is that he cannot hit a fucking thing. I'll take the guy who has a chance of not being terrible at the plate over the guy who doesn't.

Second most dead money (48 million) on a contract in MLB history... Only one higher was Josh Hamilton.

I'm among those who was excited for the Panda signing and hopeful that, even if we overpaid, he would be a solid part of the team for awhile. Oh well, guess next time I'll listen a bit more to those who have seen the guy play more than a handful of times.

I wish him the best, if he goes back to SF and is reborn or at least plays out productively I'll not gripe much. But it was definitely time to make a move, and Kudos to DD for doing so.

I thought only players on the 40-Man roster counted towards the salary cap. And if Panda is unclaimed and released into the wild, the Sox while stil owing him the contractual amount, were no longer liable for the salary cap implications of his contract.

And that was the only folly the Red Sox ever took on... Except for the Popsicle stick skyscraper, and that 50 ft magnifying glass, and the escalator to nowhere.

Personally, I would be ecstatic if the Yankees were to sign him.

Lin has a .448 BABIP. Before this year, he's never hit. He may stay hot, and I guess that's what the Sox would be banking on. Just seems Marrero has the better pedigree.

Complaining about Sandoval being out of shape and presuming that if he just were in shape he would be a better player all sounds like when a couple gets divorced because the life of the party at 25 still wants to be the life of the party at 35 with 3 kids and a mortgage. I think this is the best move to make because Sandoval has a pretty long track record with the Red Sox of poor production offensively and defensively. If he was the nearly 3 win player Cherington believed he was signing, I don't really care what he weighed.
