Why? Seems pretty reasonable. I take it when you left your home you didn't miss a single thing about it?
He just said he was horrible because his heart wasn't in it. It's a total lack of accountability. This guy was paid an ungodly amount of money to provide a service... That HE AGREED to... but he couldn't because his heart wasn't in it. His heart.

I'm am typically very protective of players, their privacy, and understanding they are people first.

But this, this is insulting to Ownership, management, the staff, the players, the fans. He quit. He's a quiter. Guy got his money and checked out. He's a joke.

From his leaving SF in a fit of pique over the weight clause to angrily lashing out about missing none of them to hanging out on instagram during games to his comically inept play in every aspect of the game--he was tough to take seriously as a person (to me at least). That article is funny, but also the least surprising thing in the world. He's just kind of a joke. Probably a sweet guy, but... yeah.

The thing that killed me is describing the day he got released and how the job and life you love could be taken from you, "just like that." He was stunned.

How many times and in different ways do you think that was communicated to him both in SF and Boston re: his weight?

You are overreacting to this. The guy is just saying "It never felt right because [INSERT PLACE I PLAY NOW] was always home to me." He's (Kung Fu) pandering to his current fan base.

Yes, it's kind of insulting to the old fan base. But to conclude that he quit on the Sox isn't right. He tried to show up in shape and did this year. He was apparently liked as a teammate. But he stunk. And maybe there was some mental stuff going on.

Time to move on.

Panda as quoted in the article: "When I try too much, I struggle."

Corollary: if I'm struggling too much, I just won't try

Wait, which is it? He's "just" saying that he didn't have his heart in the job he was paid $100m to do, or that he was pandering to his current fan base?

That's... what SoBoSox is saying. I think he was trying to just endear himself to the team he took a shit on leaving town because he's back now and thoroughly embarrassed himself for no good reason, but fucked up in the process and admitted to not giving enough of a shit to succeed because he missed home.

I agree, it was time to move on, maybe by just shutting the fuck up and playing baseball.

Don't really see much of a reason to get bent out of shape over a blatant 'the end is near" fluff piece, which he likely was just told to sign his name to anyway.

I mean the cheap pop value in a completely lost season is nice and all, but if you are SF here are you honestly looking at the player today and seriously including him in your off-season retool/rebuild?

Keefe on WEEI pointed out he could have gone to the minors with the Sox and tried to redeem some of the investment in him, but went to the minors with SF instead.

What do you expect him to say?

When my brief time playing shitty semi-pro basketball ended I told people, and even believed it myself maybe, my heart was in teaching and my hometown.

That wasn't for the fans, it was for him. He was trying to rationalize why he sucked. I suspect he will be in for a rude awakening.

Good thing it wasn't my money.

Is (was) he even a good player with less weight? Good as in $100m player?

Sunk cost.

With apologies to a Disney princess

Let him go, let him go
Can't field or bat anymore

Let him go, let him go
Turn away and slam the (fridge) door
I don't care what Frisco's going to say
Let his suck rage on
The cash never bothered me anyway.

Edited: lyrics.

But SF gets him at MLB minimum while the red sox pay his contract.
No kidding. That wasn't the point of the original post, which was Panda took the Magellan route to get back to SF without having a weight clause in his contract. Now he can walk up and down Lombard Street, go to Alcatraz, ride a bike over the Golden Gate Bridge and hang out a Fisherman's Wharf while he has an ice cream sundae feedback strapped to his face.

Where will his heart be when he hits .220 over the last 6 weeks and SF doesn't bring him back next year?

He was really good in 2009 and 2011, and ok/good from 2012-2014. His 2010 was forgettable. The problem being his offense (mostly his ISO/Power) declined every year after 2011. In 2015, he also stopped hitting for average which is where he provides a lot of his value. He seems to have had somewhat of a bounce back in the power category this year but still isn't hitting for average. His D at 3b was also solid until he left SF.

Long story short, if you got the player he was from 2009-2014, he'd be worth the 5/100. It was clear to mostly everyone on this forum that that wouldn't be the case. I don't think anyone could have predicted the level of suck that was to come though.

If Pablo was hitting his career .285 instead of .219, his slash line would be .285/.320/.433. That's right in line with his hitting lines from 2010, 2012-2014 and a serviceable player if his defense is passable.

Was the other 3rd base option at the time Chase Headley?

A big what if... how would the Sox handle Headley if he was signed and sucked?

He could OPS .950 for the Giants and I wouldn't care one bit. Rafael Devers has arrived and it is glorious. Let the Panda go.
This is where I'm at. Not my money and the kid is reminding us that a player who might not fit the uniform as ideally as we'd like, but he gives a shit and wants to be an all time great, is an amazing thing. The attitude and approach is the best thing about Devers right now. I hope he never loses the vibe he's brought with him.

It's too bad it didn't work out in Boston but I always really loved SF and I'm really excited to be back.

or some variation thereof.

I mean, it doesn't matter one bit but when you guys do this "c'mon he couldn't have said anything else!" it makes no sense whatsoever. He's a dopey guy that sticks his foot in his mouth trying to please people. Yeah, absolutely, "so what," but he is that guy.

What are you insinuating here?

I would think that if Headley played as poorly as Sandoval did and was hurt as often as Sandoval was, he'd be in the minors and then he'd get his unconditional release. How is this a "big what if"? They did the same thing with Allen Craig.

If anything, they may have cut bait sooner since it was less money to eat.

Sorry... poorly written question. Nothing racial if that's what you were thinking.

If Panda was in better shape, not injured and 25% cheaper would he be taking up a roster spot?

I just find it interesting that Headley sucks but continues to find in the Yankee lineup... 1B against the Sox over the weekend.

The Yankees don't really have a better option at 1B. And, Headley has had stretches this season where he's been a productive offensive player.

Panda is now 0 for his last 38 for SF. His overall numbers for SF in 2017 are worse than they were for the Red Sox.
Bos - .212/.269/.354 99 AB, 4 HR, 12 RBI
SF - .186/.245/.255 102 AB, 1 HR, 4 RBI

I can't wait for the SF tabloids:

Sandoval slowly drags himself towards his bamboo grove

and signed overseas:

The next guy with weight issues up for FA is going to have a hard time getting a long term deal.

As far as the big money types only putting up 279/.324/.415 slash lines going in they absolutely should.

We all know free agency isn't the place where that type of logic usually prevails though.

Saw somewhere his 0-for-38 is a club record for the Giants in SF.
To be fair, this stat -as it's being reported - is not entirely accurate. Panda's streak is only the worst performance ever among position players for the Giants. San Francisco pitcher Ron Herbel , arguably the worst hitter to ever face a major league pitch (.104 OPS in over 200 career ABs) , famously began his career 0-55.

I doubt they are selling enough of those to feed him in the pre/post game buffets.

Looks like they have Christian Arroyo as a prospect at 3B, but he's hurt and Ryder Jones is another prospect but they have him at First Base.

Last 46 games: .320/.394/.542 in 181 PA. Now up to .278/.358/.427 which works out to a 105 OPS+. Apples and oranges.

Why? They're in a tight race to pick 1-1 next year, and he makes them more money than some dude from the minors.

Now if he's still on the team opening day next year, then yes, they're idiots.
