Scherzer pitching. Game begins @8:07
I just realized that my reason for starting this thread, finding it confusing to follow several games at once, doesn't apply to the evening game. So if people prefer to go ahead and use the existing thread, I don't mind. But mods, if you close this thread, can we have separate threads for tomorrow's games?

I feel like I have to root for the Mets due to Lindor, Carrasco and Naquin – I believe that's 3x as many members of the 2016 World Series team as Cleveland still has – but it's only a slight rooting interest since Lindor is the only one of the three on the current playoff roster. I assume Carrasco would be part of NLDS rotation though and he has to be in the running for nicest human being in baseball. I also find it amusing to see AJ Preller make major move after major move and still end up with a team that was no better than it was before. It's like the sum of the Padres is what it is, regardless of the parts.

I am rooting for the Mets b/c I like their broadcasts so much, which of course won't come into play tonight. Also, I loathe Manny Machado. Whatever Pedroia may have decided, I am convinced Machado is a dirty player. I am pretty concerned, however, having watched both Scherzer and de Grom lose to the Braves. We'll see. . .

Marte trying to play through a still-broken finger is almost certainly not going to end well, but I respect the attempt.

This is such a weird sport. The strike zone varies so much from umpire to umpire that it's really a joke.
Fully agreed, I have said before that an automated strike zone will immediately make the sport like 30 percent better.

Did Joey ever win a ring as a coach?

NM, just saw he was a coach under Guillen with the White Sox when they won in 2005.
Fun fact: eight current managers have rings as players - five were with the Red Sox: Cora, Kapler, Cash, Ross, Roberts. Dusty Baker, who everyone wants to see get a ring as a manager, already has one as a member of the 1981 Dodgers. The other two? They were teammates. I'll spoiler it if you're trying to figure it out.

Mark Kotsay and Craig Counsell were both on the '97 Marlins.

Huge for the Mets here, they really can't afford to squander this.

Oh man, I hadn’t heard the news about Sarah Langs. She was always so nice and friendly when I worked with her at one of her stops along the way. Just dreadful.

Yeah, I think she just publicly announced it in the last day or two, awful.

Yeah, bad call by the Mets to wear those hideous turn of the century black jerseys. I think I read that Steve Cohen likes them. Scherzer’s start tonight might convince him to ditch them for good.

Marte looked pretty good in that at bat. Let’s see if they can get back in this one. I’d like to see Alvarez pinch hit in a big spot.

I'm sorry but I find it pretty hilarious that the Mets spent more days in first place over 2021/2022 combined than any other team in MLB, but lost the division both years.

They did and Max continues to not look like Max.
This is why, for all his problematic politics, I think the Gestopper belongs in the Hall of Fame. Because you can count his subpar playoff starts on a couple of fingers (and one bum ankle). He pretty much always came through when the games were the biggest.

Scherzer is old and DeGrom is going to leave. They may not have a lot of years left.
With the money their owner is willing to spend, I think their window remains open.

Agree. And who is going to pay deGrom more than the Mets?

The pitcher deserves to be in but the human can kick rocks. Maybe when he’s dead. Maybe.
