How would an unretiring work cap-wise if BB lit the bat signal mid-season as he did with Colvin and Seau?

So I work in television, and do some of the shoots with the teams leading into the Super Bowl. You know-- look into the camera, tell us why you're like family; cross your arms and look bad-ass, etc. That kind of stuff. Seeing some of my other NFL work Atta Boy'ed on here is one of the reasons I actually joined, kind of a dream since my days of heavy lurking in the invite-only-era from 2002 -- 2008.

Anyway, we were doing the shoot in New England with the Patriots before SB 53. And I was on the set and said to Chung, "Ok, look into the camera and say, 'Do Your Job!'"

"What was that?"

"Do Your Job!"

(With a laugh) "Ha, I shoulda known. I hear that shit ALL the time..."

Talking with some team folks later, it was made clear that he and BB absolutely loved each other and had a really special relationship.

*****

Congratulations on a great career to a guy who took a minute to figure out how to "do your job!" but once he did, he did it so well. He was a solid player, a trusted voice on the field, and a great leader. I'll miss watching him play, he always seemed to have a blast.

Time marches on and all, but there just aren't many guys left from those early 2010s teams that never quite made it over the hump. 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013... The days of Aqib Talib and Gronknandez. Danny Woodhead and Brandon Lloyd. It always makes me a little rueful when another one rides off into the sunset.

They were certainly bittersweet but it seems crazy how the next 5-6 years turned out, and just wild that it was already a decade ago.

Devin McCourty, too. And Slater.

If I remember correctly, Chung was expected to retire last year. Postponing that decision and opting out gave him an extra year of health coverage and a modest stipend, without hurting the Pats cap-wise (except for pushing the dead-money hit from the lost 2020 season to 2021, where it might actually matter).

Chung wasn’t a Pats HOFer in my opinion, but it’s not because he didn’t work hard and put the team first; he just wasn’t as sublimely physically gifted as a lot of other NFL defensive backs. Glad he won three rings and got to leave on his own terms.

And Hightower. That's it for guys on the roster now who were Patriots before part 2 of the dynasty (2014).

Lots of guys have left in the last year or so, beyond Brady (especially if we include guys who came and left): Chung, Cannon, Develin, Ebner, Gostkowki, Collins, Harmon, Bolden.
