4 pm on cutdown day has come and gone. We're still waiting for the final cuts, but there are already several guys that BB has jettisoned that would figure to be candidates for the PS, including:

- RB: K.Harris, Taylor
- OL: Hambricht, Sherman, Russey, Murray, Durant, Ferentz
- WR: Humphrey, Nixon
- TE: Asiasi
- DL: Pharms
- LB: McGrone

Note that this year brings new rules for the practice squad, with veterans eligible for up to 6 of 16 slots (source)
The NFL has announced some modifications to their rules regarding practice squad spots. Per the revised roster parameters, each team is allowed to carry 16 players on its respective practice squad. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the league had allowed for an increase in practice squad players to 14 players in 2021.

The 2022 update will permit up to six of those spots to be used on veterans. Additionally, a player can now be standard-elevated three times rather than two during the regular season. In keeping continuity from 2021, no elevation limits will be set for the playoffs.
Let's track comings and goings here.

Edit: updated list following final cut to 53. Excluded Mitchell, Langhi, Desjarlais, Bethel, Hammond, Wieland, Hawkins, Vizcaino, Wydermyer (who I guess are candidates to come back as well).

I'd like to see Russey, Ray and Harris, but I would guess at least 1 of those guys gets claimed, maybe all 3.
Harris I thought looked really good in the Damien Harris mold, wouldn't be surprised if GB or PIT claim him.

Happy to see virtually every camp darling stick around, Ray and the WRs in particular.

Patriots.com transactions show:

"Signed the following players to the practice squad: OL James Ferentz, RB Kevin Harris, DB Brad Hawkins, WR Lil'Jordan Humphrey, LB Harvey Langi, LB Cameron McGrone, CB Terrance Mitchell, OL Bill Murray, WR Tre Nixon, DL Jeremiah Pharms Jr., DL LaBryan Ray, OL Kody Russey, TE Matt Sokol, RB J.J. Taylor and TE Jalen Wydermyer."

That's 15 of 16 slots. And no mention of the mysterious OL #68.

Bowden was a 3rd round pick in 2020. He has extensive kick return experience as well as limited punt return reps. His best traits are his contact balance, power, and RAC. He has gadget RB/WR makeup but he's not a good route runner and he's a slot only kind of receiver. He has so much to learn though in terms of not just his route running but when and how to attack zones, come back to the QB, body and hands positioning, etc. There is a lot more to being a receiver than just having good RAC. I wouldn't rule out him having a niche role sometime in the future but it's unlikely in year 3 without much progress shown that he has what it takes. The odds of him materializing into anything are extraordinarily small.

Weird early career, Raiders moved him to RB, then traded him to MIA who wanted him to be a WR but then he went on IR for the whole season.
I wonder whether Bill sees him as a Cordarrelle Patterson type, or as a WR. Wonder if he's on the PS as some KR/PR insurance and to see if he can learn the Montgomery role (formerly the White/Faulk role)

@Cellar-Door He is definitely much more suited to be a WR vs an RB imo. Although he does have that gadget RB or scat back kind of profile. CP84 was bigger and could run between the tackles and work in pass pro and I am not sure Bowden has that kind of ability or will be able to develop it. I never understood why the Raiders wanted him as an RB. Also, he personally thinks his best position is WR. Then again the Gruden Raiders weren't exactly known for their personnel and development savvy. I didn't like his projection as an RB - I don't think he has much if any pass pro experience for example and his RB experience was mainly as a quarterback which is different.

Bowden had some nice flashes this preseason. He definitely shines once he gets the ball in his hands because he has some very good wiggle and contact balance.

I thought he might make the team strictly as a returner and maybe emergency WR6 since he handled the majority of punts this preseason, but that didn’t pan out.

I for one am shocked ... SHOCKED ... that the Patriots added to their practice squad a player who spent the preseason learning the offense of their first opponent's new coaching staff

Tradition as old as time. McDaniel was asked about it this morning by the media and said he’s unconcerned because you can go on the internet and download basically every playbook he’s helped work on.

Miami hasn’t installed the Patriots game plan or calls yet, so Lynn Bowden might tell them some info on personnel groupings, but isn’t going to reveal anything earth shattering.

I has never seen this before but he was drafted in the third round by the Raiders and traded for a worse pick to the Dolphins before even making it out of his first camp. What did the raiders see in under a month that caused them to say we whiffed on a top 100 pick and we are getting out at a reduced deal ASAP. Absent some huge off the field problems I don’t recall this ever happening.

So when does DMac get cut?

Which of course Belichick knows too.

Plus, these guys sometimes stick, see: Berrios, Braxton; Woodhead, Danny. The idea that a team is going to waste a roster spot for a “spy” is ridiculous.

He's not on the roster, he's the last guy added to an expanded taxi squad

Do you think Bowden could be useful as a scout QB? To mimic some of the more mobile QBs.

There’s just no way Bill would use one of those spots purely for mimicking purposes.
So, not for mimicking purposes, and not for mimicking porpoises, either?

Interesting chart here, thanks to Jason_OTC on twitter, showing percentages of draft picks over the last 5 drafts (back to 2018) still on team, still in league, and out of the NFL.
View attachment 54955
Now their records over the past 5 seasons:

Cin: 29-51-1 (.363)
Was: 31-50 (.383)
Chi: 39-42 (.481)
Mia: 37-44 (.457)
Ari: 35-46 (.432)
Car: 33-48 (.407)
GB: 52-29 (.642)
Den: 30-51 (.370)
Hou: 33-48 (.407)
LV: 35-46 (.432)

So of this group, only Green Bay has been any good at all over those five years. And of course they have an all-time great at QB, which helps immensely.

Peter King's fretting about the Pats WR corps is sort of getting vindicated by all the WRs on the practice squad.

They have an open spot on the 53, so maybe Humphrey or Nixon's being promoted (and they're back-filling a PS WR spot).

If they traded high future picks for a WR or two then maybe King would be on the right path but moving around the back end of the roster is seeing if something might stick.
