Flying Elvis = 10 Super Bowl appearances and 6 wins, plus a 20 year period of dominance that will never be equaled, Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady.

Pat Patriot = blacked out home games, metal bleachers, the worst stadium in professional sports, 6-10 seasons, Tony Eason and Hugh Millen.

Pat is fine as a throwback but I don’t get the fondness of that old logo when the new one is so closely associated with so many great memories.

Pat Patriot has both classic appeal and, at the risk of being ridiculous, seems 'authentic.' Flying Elvis has all the trappings of the most generic new era team design and is as inspired as one would hope for from a newly created minor league hockey team.

I have yet to meet someone who doesn't long for the old Pat the Patriot uniform. It's seemingly universally liked, not just by folks on this board. There must be some underlying business reason to not switch back.

To answer my own question, the old "gear" is widely available (I own a Pat Patriot hat) and any new version of uni will get some swathe of folks buying it so they make money on both ends.

+1. They're now the premier franchise in the league, and one of the 2 or 3 in all of North American professional sports. They accomplished that in the current uniforms. They're not the fucking Falcons, Browns, Bengals, etc. They don't need to try and manufacture a new, winning image. I get, and can live with very minor tweaks. Gotta keep moving that merchandise. But as someone who has followed the team since the mid 70's, there is very little to be nostalgic about for the Pat Patriot era. No thanks.

One can agree or disagree on the aesthetics of each, and I might even agree that Pat Patriot is more “authentic”. But you can not argue with the memories and associations of one versus the other in terms of on the field success. Elvis arrived Parcells and Bledsoe’s first year, Kraft a year later, SB a year after that and so forth. I’d be stunned if they went back to the old logo full time. I agree the changes are likely to be in the margins.

First off there‘s an entire generation of Pats fans in their 20s and 30s who don’t give a fuck about Pat Patriot and have been watching the Pats win Super Bowls with their current logo for 20 years. If youve never met anyone who doesn’t long for Pat Patriot, you havent tried very hard.

Second, as I point out above, what people associate with each mascot does matter. Elvis = the most dominant professional sports franchise of the modern era. There is no way they are dropping this for some boomer nostalgia over a crouching minute man hiking a football.

We tried this in like 2012-2014 didn’t we?
Similar. They went back to blue lettering on the aways. Which was controversial at the time for the same reason, having won the prior 2 World Series in the aways with red lettering.

I love the Pat patriot logo too. But I agree with Ralph. Keep it for throwback day. While the Elvis is more NFL generic, switching back to the loser uniforms just when the Brady dynasty is ending seems like a terrible idea.

They just changed the lettering a few years ago but I could see them tweaking it again.

Having a colonial era mascot/theme provides so many opportunities if they really wanted to mix it up at some point.

I prefer Pat Patriot to Flying Elvis — he was, after all, the only NFL logo who was actually playing football — I was always a tad bothered historically that "patriots" from New England were dressed like redcoats.

I suppose, for this iteration, we should attempt a guess regarding the clue in the video:

Something old: Earlier version of numbers?
Something new: Piping on the pants?
Something borrowed: Borrowed ... from where?
Something blue: Current blue

It’s always been a source of minor irritation to me that that Pats’ age of dominance has coincided with a period of generally desultory unis and graphics. Between the overuse of silver and navy (neither of which appears on old glory), underuse of red, gratuitous outlining, and the generic “aerodynamic” helmet shape that every other team post 1990s has felt obligated to shoehorn their logo into ... just a generic and drab corporate look unbefitting of the greatest sports dynasty of all time, imo.

Not a huge deal in the scheme of things, but in the same way I’m glad Brady is the handsome devil he is, I’d probably have loved the Brady era 3.8% more if they had run out every game looking more like this...

Agreed with those that think we'll only see minor tweaks. As someone who prefers the Pat the Patriot logo to the Flying Elvis stylistically, I cannot deny their associations with performance of the franchise. I'm hoping we see a merging of both home and away with the color rush style and an updated helmet from silver to white - maybe with a red cage though. This would be a nice compromise and allow for red alternates to more closely approximate the throw-back styling while retaining the winning image.

He was doing the most boring thing you can do on a football field short of being the guy who stands between the long-snapper and the punter.

Hmm, that’s actually quite a handsome set — makes me think I more of an intrinsic issue with the silver (we’re an AFC East team, not Dallas or Oakland) and with graphic excesses like the obnoxious repetition of the helmet logo on the shoulders than I do with navy blue or Flying Elvis per se.

It has been an amazing run, but Elvis really is one of the worst logos in sports.

Why not retain the dark blue color scheme of the dominant era but bring back Pat the Patriot, a superior logo.

Best of both worlds.

I love Pat the Patriot too, but it probably should just be brought back for special throwbacks and not the main logo anymore. Something else to consider and I believe Kraft even said this once, why have uniforms that are red and the same color as the British army? You know the group the original patriots were battling.

I want no part of Pat Patriot. PTSD. Let's bring back Hugh Millen while we're at it. Hard pass.
Agreed. The team will suck again soon enough anyway. If they go back to Pat the Patriot now, then within ten years they’ll go back to Elvis in a marketing attempt to get back to the glory years.

There's always this "retro" look

I've never seen that helmet sample. I do recall photos of the big placard featuring that new logo that was paraded in front of the Sullivan Stadium crowd and soundly voted down by the fans.

I agree the white helmet with the Flying Elvis is superior to the silver version.

BTW, no blue on Old Glory? Really?

Asking for a friend: Is there a contingent that doesn’t care?

Uniforms and logos are things that inspire passion. But whenever I hear these discussions it feels like people are speaking a foreign language. The amount of time spent on color rush uniforms or the Red Sox on Friday night or how great are those Browns uniforms that my grandfather probably liked. I just don’t give a shit. Am I alone? I often am on stuff like this so checking.

Err, I mean that my friend is,

Actually kind of like that. Would be a good alternate uni at least.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. Just ditch the silver helmet.

I love white helmets. Probably the old Oilers fan in me.

The AFC East is by far the ugliest division in football. The Jets redesign was an abomination, the Bills should wear red helmets, and the Dolphins ditched a classic look/logo.

Why can't they be traditional like the Red Sox and Celtics(for the most part) and Bruins? I liked the 60's and mid to late 80's red ones with the stripe on jersey shoulder and white helmet with the Patriot kneeling. And the away white with the the red pants and still the stripe on shoulder. Never liked the light blue Bledsoe era ones or the navy blue BB era ones with the weird patriot logo

The Jets traditional 60's and 70's ones they went back to in late 90's till now were so much better then the 80's , 90's and these ugly ones. Agree. Same with Dolphins.I liked the Bills pre 1974 with white helmet.
