Per Lazar, Bethel is expected back.

Also:
Bethel would be an odd choice to cut and re-sign. Since he was signed through next season, and had 550K guaranteed this year, cutting him will put a 1.2M dead money cap hit on their books, re-signing him at the minimum would cost them about an extra million bucks against the cap over just keeping him on the 53.

I'd guess they're looking to trade him before he's officially cut by 4PM. Can't see him being back regardless.

Are you sure about that? It seems odd that they'd do something dumb, and I'd think the re-signing would cancel out the guaranty.

Interestingly he became a Pats because the Ravens were having a roster crunch like this.

It doesn't cancel out the guarantee. They would get a credit on the 2023 cap for his guarantee if they re-signed him now. But he counts as his dead money hit and whatever salary they pay him on this years cap.

I don't think they did something that dumb, I think Lazar is wrong in saying he'll be back. It would make no sense.

Guess I need to read up on embedding tweets... but Cam Mcgrone released. Thought it may be a possibility but can't imagine anyone taking a real shot at him with his play this preseason.

It could just be that they don't view that 1.2 mill dead cap hit + league min contract as too much to assume for a player they really want back? Maybe there just wasn't a better option for this money wise if they had to set the IR designations for the 53 man roster first?

I'm kind of thinking that particularly since you might get some cap money back next year. Presumably you're doing this because you think guys like Sam Roberts are really worth hanging on to.

Wouldn't there be a better way to do it?

Why would they want to cut Bethel, then re-sign him when that maneuver will count around 3M against the cap instead of the 2M cap hit he has now? Why wouldn't they just do that with say, Joe Cardona? His cap hit would be the same either way.

I could be wrong, but it seems really remote to me that they'd burn a million bucks in cap space when they're already up against it cap wise this season.

Unless they look at Bethel as someone who would be available later in the season. There is still this season's cap to consider, as even a partial season contract would be additive. But perhaps less consequential than the remaining non-guaranteed money on this year's salary plus the per-game roster bonus they would have to pay out. Perhaps a small amount of cap savings in 2022 is still possible depending upon the numbers.

Yeah, I don't know man.

If you cut him, and only signed him at mid-season, he'd cost about the same as just keeping him now.

If you think he can help your team, I don't know why you'd only want him for 8 games when you could have him for 17 games for the same price.

The most likely answer with Bethel is "they want him back" is some agent bullshit trying to gin up interest in in a 32 year old special teams guy.

EDIT: Everyone values ST coverage to some extent but not many do for more than the league minimum for 32 year old guys when you've already presumably built your team, paid some core ST guys, etc

Bummer that Henry Anderson got cut. He's a local kid from around here in GA and I'm pretty friendly with his godmother. He was looking forward to having his first healthy season with the Pats after his injury last year.

His career has to be something of a dissapointment (although seven years in the pros, got that pension, made millions, not too much of a dissapointment!)-I thought he was going to be great coming out of college and he's had flashes, a seven sack year, started some games, but never quite made the leap to the next level.

Wade!

So interested to see how this all shakes out. 4 healthy WR and 2 TE does not strike me as something we'll see week 1.

I kind of hate that we cut promising young players to keep 3 QBs, especially given the combination of Hoyer's talent level now (bad) and the likelihood this roster could survive really bad QB play and contend (basically none). But I get that they made that decision months ago when they gave him his contract

Wish they kept another receiver instead of an eighth LB, (with half of them not far above replacement level) but I'm confident they can pick up a TE from another team's roster crunch.
Seems that Davis is break in case of WR emergency

And also confident they can get Asiasi to PS.

They have 25 defenders and 22 offensive players (19 not including QB, 18 not including Thornton) so moves are coming.

Hoyer isn’t there to be a good player, he’s there to help Jones play better. If he does he’s well worth his spot

I get it, but.... you couldn't get that cheaper? Or agreed to sign him, cut him for 53, then bring him back at more money after you made the IR moves?
I just think using 2 roster spots of the 50-51 you have available on QBs who give you zero chance to do anything on the field feels like a waste.

Hate to be negative but feels like such a blah roster; guess that’s what years of lousy drafts and an I’ll advised spending spree lead to.

So, and this is where I always get confused, is Wilkerson out for the year with the concussion?

Agreed, but the fact is Hoyer is better than Zappe right now. What stinks more is that they drafted Zappe in the 4th round, which likely influenced their decision to roster him. In the end, though, I'm not sure that they cut a lot of young talent. Ray looks promising, but he was undrafted so there's a chance we see him again. Harris and Sherman were late picks, Asiasi, to this point, was a failed pick, etc. McGrone didn't stand out.
Is there someone you had in mind?

I would argue that the 4th round selection probably didn’t influence the decision - they’d have moved on if they didn’t see the potential. At least, I think.
