True, but surely the receiver plays a role on *some* balls being uncatchable. And all those guys are normalized by having the same quarterback throw to them.

I think that was bowiac's point.

Glad he could catch a ball with no one within 30 yards of him.  Love him, but dropped so many of those passes.
Didn't a good number of Vereen's wheel route drops happen when he was playing with a case on his wrist?  I may be mistaken about this but I think I recall that in the 2013 season.  I also don't remember many significant drops of any kind last season out of Vereen.

Regardless, Lewis has been a much better replacement for Vereen, and addition to the line-up, than I anticipated.

Many said not to be overly concerned about Vereen's loss because BB is good at finding RBs who can catch the ball.  Many were right.  What I don't think anyone really predicted was that he would find someone who seems -- with all three game SSS caveats -- to be such an adept running RB, also.

Yeah - I should have been clearer there. I was noting that Vereen's rate of catches is notably lower than Faulk or Woodhead's (two players in vaguely similar roles with the same QB), plus I threw in Sproles for good measure.

The reference to some percent of targets being uncatchable was to explain that why difference between 68% and 75% is more than one extra catch per ten that clank off his hands. If 15% of targets are just uncatchable for instance, then the difference between catching 68% and 75% of targets is almost doubling the true "drop rate."

Vereen's catch rate last year was right in line with career norms: 68%

Fair enough.  I don't recall many drops on wheel routes last year but they may have happened.  Do you (or anyone else) know how that rate compares to other backs?  It seems on the low side to me but that could be wrong.

Back to Lewis, Ben Volin had this one-liner in his notes column (http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/10/10/nfl-view-betting-double-standard/Oci5Up6lRdsn0JfmJ3JbBK/story.html) today:

It’s hard to blame Lewis for wanting to put a little extra money in his pocket, but we’re told the Patriots were shocked that Lewis accepted this below-market deal.

I actually really liked the earlier third down run, too - the one where it looked like he'd be stopped for a loss, but squirmed free and got down to about the 1

And this was easily a bigger play - a much bigger play - than the TD he scored. If he gets dropped for a loss the Pats kick a FG and lead 6-3 instead of 10-3. If he doesn't score the TD the Pats still have 2nd and goal from the 7 with a 13-3 lead.

But the Patriots win because they cheat!  It has nothing to do with the fact that they let a terrific player (Vereen) go because of the cost, and then picked up a player that has been oft-injured and that NOBODY ELSE WANTED BUT COULD HAVE HAD, and utilized that player in such a way as to allow him to maximize his abilities.

No, it can't possibly be that.....

Its kind of nice to rotate newer RB's in that are hungry and play with that chip on their shoulder as well. It makes little sense to overspend at a somewhat fungible position. That lack of loyalty definitely seems like cheating though.

That burst of speed when he hits the 5 looks like someone hit fast-forward.
That's the crazy thing about the run. Making the two guys miss was nice, but you see moves like that a couple times a week, only for the third and fourth guys to come in and clean up the tackle. But somehow he goes from being basically stopped a the 6-yard-line to bursting ahead so quickly that Corey White misses the tackle at the 4 and J.J. Wilcox's bump at the 2 can't keep him out of the end zone.

Meanwhile, Jonas Gray has 49 yards in 9 attempts over two games for the 1-3 Miami Dolphins.

Giving him a better yards per carry than Legarrette Blount.  Apples to apples.

Per Edelman's AMA, when asked if Dion had a locker room nickname:

i call him the jitterbug https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIgZ7gMze7A

Just a little something for future game threads.

Lewis had not played a regular-season snap in two years due to injury, he's not a big guy, and it seems like he's going to get a lot of playing time (which means his chances of getting hurt again are high).  He'd have been a fool not to take guaranteed money.

In light of Lewis starting to miss time due to injury, I thought I'd give this a bump...
