Great deal for both sides on the face of it. Curious to see what the cap number is.

I can't believe they signed him $800k more per AAV than the next highest kicker, Seabass / Gould. Wonder about guaranteed, but this guy is a kicker so he'll prob get it.

And I quote myself from March:

Highest-paid kickers in the league right now are around $3.7M per year, and only Janikowski has more than 50% of his total guaranteed.I think this is a move just to take away negotiating leverage, and you likely end up with a either a 3-year deal worth around $12M with $5-6M guaranteed, or a 4-year deal worth around $16M with $6-7M guaranteed.

This makes me incredibly happy. I've had a soft spot for him since his rookie year and seeing him turn into, perhaps, the best kicker in the league has been awesome to watch.

Longer extra points, excellent touchback percentages, bad weather city, and good durability make this a great deal for both. I think kickers will have a more important role as this game evolves.

Balls lose air in colder weather man.  I'm certain I read that somewhere.

Move somewhere colder, it won't be harder, problem solved.

We don't have the exact breakdown by year yet, so no one is entirely sure, but Miguel is speculating that it's probably north of $300-400k that will be saved this year in cap space.

And we couldn't have used a chunk of that to exercise the Revis option?!!!

Say we use all of it. Only 19.6 million to go!

Revis was going to be very, very expensive.

Volin:

Got my hands on Gostkowski's new deal. 4 years, $17.2m, with a $6m signing bonus and $10.1m fully guaranteed (2015 and 2016 salaries)

Me on March 2:

Yeah I think there is a good chance they get something done longer term. You could do 4 years, $16M total, $6M guaranteed. Base salaries of say $1.5M-$2.5-$3.0-$3.0 with hits of $3.0-$4.0-$4.5-$4.5 or something like that. Everyone wins. Could even reduce the 2015 base salary lower and increase one of the back years.

Ok I mis worded it. Meant to write $6M signing bonus. Then you can guarantee year one and two salaries. So it is $10M guaranteed and still fairly cap friendly and cuttable after two years if they need to.

Pretty much nailed it.

To be fair, you should point out all of the times you were wrong about something (like we all are prone to be, too).

I would but I don't have time to re-read the entire DG thread. I was probably wrong at least 100 times.

This deal brings us to almost 11M in cap space. That number will go down a bit when we transition from top 51 to full roster accounting but it's still more unused cap space than I can recall the Pats ever having in the BB era (could be wrong). I'd expect the team to be aggressive in exploring trades or an opportunistic signing of a surprise veteran cut during camp.

I think their plan is to roll it over to next year, to get some of the younger players extended. Soldier is going to be expensive.

Or they could sign guys like Solder, Jones, and Hightower to early extensions now, or sometime during the 2015 season.

I'd say Jones is as good as gone with the filthy money being thrown around at his position. He's not going to be worth anywhere near what he gets, I'd guess. I think Collins is the other guy they'll go after aggressively, hopefully before the season starts, if possible. He's only going to get better. Solder is an interesting case; they have serviceable depth at the position for cheap, how high are they willing to go for the talent differential? I think Hightower and Collins are the first two Belichick goes after, and I'd suspect they get done before either hits the market.

Perhaps they are waiting to assess the health of Hightower (and Mayo to a lesser degree) before making decisions.

This seems like exactly where the Red Sox screwed up with Porcello.  :smithicide:  Not that he was coming back from injury but more that they could have waited until the season started before committing the money.

According to Miguel, Collins cannot be extended until January 4, 2016

Huh, I did not realize there was a latency period where players could not have their contracts extended. Thanks for the info, I'll make sure to check in the future.

I hesitate to say this since it's possible my own sarcasm meter is off, but you do know I was joking about using the Gost savings to exercise the Revis option, right?

Isn't this basically the Revis clause where rookies lost the right to hold out or renegotiate their rookie deals inder the new CBS?

But wouldn't an extension signed anytime between 1/4/16 and 3/1/16 count in the 2015 year?

I'm not certain but I would think they would just tack on the new contract to the rookie deal. 2015 would be unaffected I believe.

An article here from Sports on Earth in 2014 goes through some scenarios for options and when a renegotiation can take place.

The new contracts are structured so no rookie can renegotiate his contract in his first three seasons, no matter how Russell Wilson-ish he was. (A built-in escalator system provides a little fourth-year relief for mid-round picks like Wilson who become superstars). At the end of three years, players and teams receive a three-month window to either renegotiate, exercise a fifth-year option (team's discretion, where applicable) or play out the fourth and final year of the original deal. Those first negotiation windows have just opened, ushering in a new era in roster management: an Extend It or Not? game show for teams that have enjoyed three years of moderately priced services from young draftees.
