While it is way too early to judge the draft class, the early returns are positive.

1. Cole Strange, G: Starting as a rookie and making some plays. Also making mistakes. But the athleticisim plays in the league and this loks like a rookie learning curve type of situation.

2. Tyquan Thornton, WR: Hasn't played much due to injury, but he impressed in camp and the Pats obviously like him, acitivating him at the first opportunity and dressing him as a 6th WR even though it meant going shorthanded at another position (RB).

3. Marcus Jones, DB/KR: Has already made an impact as a returner and has gotten a few snaps in at DB without doing anything terrible.

4. Jack Jones, CB: Undersized and poor tackling technique, but has that unteachable thing that ballhawk DBs have. Two interceptions already and sometimes looks like the WR on passes in his vicinity.

5. Bailey Zappe, QB: Looks like his floor may be legit NFL backup, which is more than a lot of QBs drafted in middle rounds can say.

6. Sam Roberts, DT: Made the team as a 6th round pick.

No one from the class has outright failed, but the others haven't made any positive impact yet.

This comes on the heels of 2021, when they hit on Jones, Barmore, and Stevenson - with the jury still out on Bledsoe (whom they seem to like) and maybe a couple of others.
Good list but some of those criticisms seem a little harsh. I haven’t read any criticisms if Strange since the Miami game. He’s been a beast. And Jack Jones’ tackling technique seemed more based on two plays where he was trying to rip the ball out instead of bringing the guy to the ground, maybe because he’d already stripped a ball in that game and was overexcited l. Hard to be anything but elated about him so far.

Still early, but it looks like, at minimum, there are 5 hits in this draft (could still be more). It's very obvious why they drafted Thornton, condisered a reach by many at the time.

I was looking over the draft last night.

Patriots traded #21 (CB Trent McDuffie) to KC for #29 (OG Cole Strange), #94 and #121 (CB Jack Jones)
Patriots traded #94 (QB Matt Corral) to Carolina for #137 (QB Bailey Zappe) and a 2023 3rd round pick.

So, Strange, Jack Jones, Zappe and Carolina's 3rd (which could end up being the 1st pick in the round) to move down 8 spots.

But I was told Belichick had lost his fastball

I don’t really care that much about going LG at 29 or Strange. Is it ideal value? No. But if you have a pocket passer with limited mobility I would argue there is more value in protecting him well vs a more mobile QB. They also needed a guy who could pull well since, you know, they run GAP schemes.

I’m not sold on Marcus Jones as a slot corner who can cover anyone but I can buy his status as an elite returner and a matchup guy against smaller twitchier athletes. It might work out and maybe he can neutralize the incredibly fast WRs in the AFC East.

Jack Jones and the RBs and OL later on are all fine picks. Zappe isn't so bad either. It's a backup QB in the 4th round in a draft where kickers and punters started going off the board.

The one that I’m not sure about is Tyquan Thornton. He has 2 potentially elite traits with his speed and being able to beat press off the line (still developing but could be elite). But like Mark said on his pod he is more of a vertical receiver. Yes, in some respects their X receivers run a lot of vertical stems so his horizontal breaks aren't as important but I worry about both him as a prospect and if he can translate to the NFL and his fit here. I would have preferred someone who is is a more of a big catch radius type who can get to the right spot at the right time with a more complete route tree. I am torn on this pick because I like going with someone who beats press and is fast but on the other hand he's a difficult eval and has some trapdoors. Is he a one trick pony? Is Mac even going to develop into a better deep ball thrower? Lot of risk here to me. Maybe it works out. If it doesn't the narrative about BB not being able to draft receivers is going to continue to be insufferable. Although... this time, unlike with Harry, he is going against the grain taking Thornton in front of Pickens, Skyy Moore, and Pierce. It is likely 2/4 of them bust.

I know one of you on block thinks I was optimistic about the 2022 draft but there are a lot of cautions in this analysis and doubt.

Looking back at the 2022 class and it looks not so great.

Strange had an ok year but he was injured for a long time this summer and his first game back, understandably, was a disaster.

Thornton has been injured every year and had a bad camp before-hand. He looks like a bust.

Marcus is a good punt returner but he is only a rotational corner so far and has had issues with communication and responsibilities. He's been an ok rotational guy but he doesn't look like a starter.

Jack Jones is injured and had legal trouble and team trouble. It is also not clear if he would repeat his year 1 boom - he lost a lot of reps but didn't pay for it because no target. He could be a starter. Might be a rotational guy. Might be out of the league.

Zappe...

Roberts is a decent find as a rotational player.

The rest of them are off the starting roster or off the team completely.

I think Strange will be fine and will have a long NFL career.

Thornton has promise (IMO) but obviously has had major setbacks, so who knows.

Marcus Jones has been fine for what they're using him for.

Jack Jones has looked every bit like a really good CB, but he's got issues obviously.

Zappe is a legit NFL backup, which is perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with using a mid round pick on a guy who may be a career backup QB.

Roberts has been good.

Not a great draft so far. Not terrible. If Jack Jones truly is the real deal, this becomes a good draft. If not, it gets a lot worse.

Marcus and Jack Jones are fine gets for where they were drafted (3rd and 4th round). Just looked bad Sunday because both were MIA. Strange is still very much an incomplete at this point; let's give him a couple of weeks to get fully healthy and get his timing back.

As for Thornton, the biggest issue is that Bill and the team really needed that pick to work out. If he busts, it's a huge setback.

Tape wise Jack Jones was way more inconsistent than his stats show. Still have hope for him though. Think he could be a solid starter.

Marcus Jones was a 3rd round pick - potentially an overdraft for a part-time guy.

Thornton can't be written off completely yet but it is looking bad.

Roberts has played 40 snaps - he wasn't particularly effective in those snaps but it is such a limited basis.

Zappe is not a legit NFL backup, had an awful pre-season, and will probably be out the door after this year. They cut the guy and no one claimed him for their active roster to be a backup. Part of that is timing, sure. Zappe might improve but the word from the team we got from guys like Perry is that he failed to pick up the new system.

Strange should hopefully be ok but he has some bad habits with his UOH and that was on display on his first game back. Still like him.

If you get a starting guard and CB2 out of a draft with a good punt returner and rotational corner it's an average draft at best. You lose some points because it's an OG and not a CB1. If Strange or Jack Jones doesn't work out it is a bad draft.

I'd love to understand the thought process that lead them to draft Thornton over Pickens, IIRC they spent a lot more time pre-draft with Pickens not TT. Perhaps they were concerned he wouldn't recover from his ACL tear or would be a risk for re-injury. Most pre-draft analysis had TT as a 4th-6th rd pick. I hated it then and still hate it now.

I don't think we're ever going to find out the deal with Pickens. My guess is they thought he really wasn't a character fit--not off the field stuff but just maturity/dedication to the sport, etc. There was a lot of smoke on that point, there were a couple of bad penalties by pickens, a suspension--and those are the kinds of things that suggest that maybe he's a not going to be a cultural fit for BB. Which is a shame because it really seems like he's a great enough player that he could be one of the minor screw-ups on a team of character guys.

I dunno. We already hit on our character issue for that draft with Jack Jones so we’re kind of good on that end.

All I know about Marcus Jones is that he is an absolutely ELECTRIC playmaker. And the Pats desperately need playmaking. So I don't know why he doesn't get some chances on offense. We've seen what he can do with the ball in his hands.

I think the reason why is because they need him on defense (sadly, already injured) although would be curious to know what BoB thinks about him. Definitely adds some flash to the offense.

When you have a choice between taking the top WR on the board out of Georgia, or reach for a guy from Baylor, well, you just gotta take the guy from Baylor.

He's a dynamic runner with the ball in his hands but they have to scheme to get him the ball. He doesn't have an extensive route tree and is a small target so they are limited in what they can do with him. Teams will figure it out quickly. Add in the CB depth chart issues and I think Marcus Jones is a break glass in case of emergency offensive option.
