Wow! I hope this doesn’t mean less Meyers because that kid catches EVERYTHING.

I wonder who goes to make room and how they got the cap space to pull this off.

Harry returning would be nice as well, and if Wynn can shore up the line, they should be in great shape.

Between here and everywhere.
So either:

A.) Gordon’s injury is worse than originally thought.
B.) The Pats would rather bring someone else back from IR instead of Harry.
C.) Brady and Belichick are leaving at the end of the season and are going all in.

2nd rounder? Who am I to doubt BB.

This puts them out of the running for all other major trade targets. Was hoping for Hooper but oh well.

After last night my thought was that the biggest hurdle to winning another SB was going to be the OL.

is this trade indicative of the trust or lack thereof for Gordon to make it through a whole season?

Gordon injury could very well be worse than we know. Been pretty much a black hole of information on him out of Foxborough. Normally if you have a player that's gonna be out 6-8 weeks you put him on IR, but given that the Patriots have only one slot left and it appears reserved for Wynn that's not an option, so we may be riding a number of weeks with him as inactive.

To me this seems more about Edleman and his health than anything else. This takes the pressure off him going inside and he can take some time to get well. He may be sitting the next few weeks into the bye. He took a couple of big hits last night.

Draft picks get overrated. There are likely good odds that two years of a quality WR like Sanu is going to be more valuable then whomever they took at the end of the 2nd round.

He has worn #12 his whole career. Think he tries to buy Tom out?

I was a bit surprised as I thought the OL or TE were bigger needs. Then again, it's not clear who else was available that the Pats could squeeze into their cap space.

Then again, they are pretty banged up. Both Dorsett and Edelman are playing through injuries, and Dorsett's limitations become apparent if he's asked to be anything above a WR3. Gordon's knee was twisted pretty badly, and so it wouldn't surprise if he's out a few more weeks, as he wasn't even spotted at practice all week, and it seemed he was playing through some injuries even before he got hurt. They do get Harry back soon, but it would be a lot to ask of him to become a primary contributor, especially if Edelman has to miss a game or two.

With an abbreviated practice week, it's also quite possible that Sanu's first game is against the Ravens.

Rapaport mentions in a tweet the Patriots tried to get him before the draft and Falcons wouldn't move him. This was obviously right after learning Gronk wouldn't return and before learning that Gordon would be back.

Shows that the Patriots have had their eye on him a while, so they just be high on how he'll fit into their offense.

Well, they can't draft wideouts, might as well spend a pick to get a proven one for a couple of years.

Sanu always struck me as a good fit. He's not a barn burner #1, but is tough and does lots of things well. 2nd seems like a lot, but if BB is ok with it then I am too.

Not a one-for-one positional match up with Gordon since Sanu operates more in Edelman's realm but Meyer's looks good enough to provide downfield options and Harry is a first round choice that should be given a look - so I think this may be to allow some four receiver sets where the blocking abilities of the slot receivers are called upon extensively. Lots of curls, crossing patterns, screens, throws to the flat (basically what they've been doing) and a no great emphasis on looking deep.

Pats need guys that can move the chains and control the field given how strong this defense is. Seems like a great fit for a guy that can help get some first downs and cause defenses to worry about the middle of the field, aside from Edelman, which hopefully opens things up for White/Dorsett/Harry.

I understand going as high as a second, but a little surprised BB didn’t get another 7th back while he was at it.

I don’t understand reading anything into this other than they needed more WR help and he’s good. They needed him with Gordon, without him, with Edelman, without him, with Harry, without him, etc.

Wynn is coming back, so they won’t be getting a better LT option. Center they could improve upon, but good luck finding a quality Center on the market.

As for price, a late second seems reasonable, given control for 2021. The Pats roster is also stacked on the D side moving forward, so it’s not like they need 13 picks again.

He probably did, these early reports are almost always wrong.

So we just gave up Cyrus Jones/Duke Dawson/Tavon Wilson/Jordan Richards/Aaron Dobson for Mohammad Sanu. I'm fine with that. Better than giving up James White/Trey Flowers/Shaq Mason/Malcolm Mitchell/Jarrett Stidham later on in the draft.

It's actually fascinating just how poorly NE drafts in the 2nd round. Gronk and Collins are the only impact players of the past decade. They make up for it with how they handle the back end of the draft and UDFAs, but man, they are just awful in round 2. Ron Brace? Terrence Wheatley? Chad Jackson? Marquise Hill? Even going back to 2003, the only other meaningful player from those drafts is Chung, and he had to leave and come back for them to figure out what to do with him.

Wynn upgrades the OL. Watson seems to make the TE spot non-useless. I think your point about the WRs is the big one. They recently played an entire half with Gunner and Meyers at WR. I think they can survive if TE reverts back to passing-game uselessnes. They will have a much harder time overcoming depleted WR.

Jimmy G?

Vereen and Vollmer, too.

Overall, though, yeah. Two of them are dead, for God’s sake!

Bedard made the point this morning (probably fed by Miguel who has offered it in concept before) that the Pats might have improved the draft pick in exchange for ATL converting some of Sanu’s 2019 salary into bonus that they paid this year, thereby reducing the cap hit that the Pats will pay this year in his remaining salary.

And while Chad Jackson wound up a massive bust, it’s unfair to lump him in, given the fact that the pick was universally heralded as great value there. That said, their erratic performance in round two is definitely a mitigating rationalization for me.

Wonder what Sanu’s number will be. I believe 12 is taken.
I think number 12 is definitely still gettable for Sanu.

Seriously, though, this is an awesome trade and Sanu is a phenomenal player. Major upgrade for the offense. Harry, at his age, cannot touch Sanu's talent, hands, and experience.
