More depth. 2nd stint with the Pats although i dont think he played much in his previous stint here.

Feels like a practice squad body at best.

I don't think that Gaffney has ever appeared in an NFL game (non-preseason) and he's 30 years old. Seems like he's just a camp body.

I think it says good things about the relationship between Belichick and his players that a person in Gaffney's position is willing to sign with the team. I have no doubt that Belichick has told him _exactly_ what his role over the next few months would be, yet he's still signing up.

Who was the former Olympic sprinter that the Pats signed maybe 5 years ago?

Wow. Make that 9 years ago. 1 Rush for 14 yards and 3/3 in receptions. You'd think he could have done something.

EDIT: had no idea NE traded him for Blount.

EDIT 2: Shit, he had his medal stripped. Man. Not the career that guy probably had in mind.
I mean he was fantastic in terms of yards per carry.

I remember being pretty excited about him after reading this:

https://www.espn.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/8294757/olympic-sprinter-jeff-demps-causes-stir-new-england-patriots

He was injured during a 2012 preseason game, placed on IR and never played a regular season snap for the Patriots.

It really is a lesson on the fickle nature of being a pro (or even talented) athlete. One day the guy is a former Olympic-medalist sprinter, BCS-Championship winning RB, signed to play in the NFL. Just kicking life's ass.

3 years later, before he's 26 years old, he's got no medal and no job.

Yeah that is quite a roller coaster ride. 3 seasons is about the average career length for an NFL RB though. $827K in NFL career earnings for appearing in just two games over three seasons isn't bad. After taxes though it's not going to go too far and I hope he was able to save some of it.

Sucks that he had his Olympic medal stripped due to a teammate being busted for doping.

This article indicates Demps was officially clocked at 4.23 in the 40 yard dash. That is fast.

Looks like he went back to track and field full time after his NFL career. As recently as 2019 he was trying to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics Summer Games. Not sure where he stands now but at age 31 now the odds are not in his favor.

Sounds like the next Turnpike Troubadours song.
