Like Smith and Waddle, I liked him more than Tua. I'm not overly excited but if BB thinks this kid can play than I trust it. Almost every mock I did the last week the first 2 picks for the Pats were Mac Jones and Elijah Moore. Wouldn't hate if that came to fruition.
I'm not sure if Moore lasts into day 2 but a man can only dream.

A guy can only play with the teammates he has. Burrow had Chase/Jefferson/Edwards-Helaire. Not going to fault someone for performing at a high level with great teammates. There’s a lot of talent in NE too.

Not worried about the body at all unless he is unwilling to work as a pro. Maybe there is some untapped upside tied to getting in better shape.
If this body can become pro ready, Jones should be able to as well.

Fuck it.

Based on his strengths...why not?

Did he have an embarrassment of riches in Alabama? Sure. But his ability to make timing throws is a plus, regardless of the talent around him. Yes. Its easier to time a dude pushing off his outside foot on a post with a bunch of space (like he saw at 'Bama).

The strength can still transfer to shorter option and timing routes at the NFL level with less separation.

ESPECIALLY with the TEs we have (and hopefully we can get a successful slot WR also).

I'm mad we didnt go for Fields. But...well, this is my line in the sand for, "In BB we trust." I've ALWAYS deferred to his knowledge. You fuck up one of the best picks youve ever had? When Fields is there for the taking?

Lots riding on this pick.
Except Fields wasn't there for the taking. The Bears gave up everything for Fields -- fuck a draft pick trade value chart, they basically said.

Felger just said this (a ‘small trade up’), too.

I really like Fields, but that’s a big cost. And this is a team that is gonna need its picks given its roster construction in 22-23.

My gut reaction to the pick was to clap when it was announced. Part of me is probably just glad to have someone other than Cam in the fold. The other part is that I didn't want them to trade up for a wildcard, and I think the QBs after Lawrence are. Look at what SF gave up to get a guy with just as many questions. I would have preferred Fields, but I am fine with Jones at 15. No one left on the board I was excited about at that spot.

NFL Comparison: Andy Dalton.

The one realistic pick at 15 that I said I would be upset about, but hey, Bill and Josh must like him a lot, so we'll see.

I love it. We know two things:

1. Saban and Belichick signed off on this; and
2. Belichick chose Jones over Fields.

Let’s fucking go.
One other thing I know: it turns out it didn’t really matter if they were 7-9 or 5-11. They chose Mac Jones over Fields, and the other 3 QBs went so high it didn’t matter.

"Everything"?

Two firsts, two late round picks. If hes a franchise QB, that's peanuts.
Of course that’s peanuts. But if he’s a bust that’s a ton. And no one actually knows which he’ll be. In BB we trust is a phrase everyone throws around but the fact is Nfl execs know way more than any of us. If the patriots felt fields was a sure fire franchise qb they would have gone for it. Clearly they didn’t, so we shouldn’t

And if he's not you've given up two first round picks. After everything we've learned about BB and how he approaches things, that sounds like something BB would do?
If he likes a player? Why not? Weve also seen them succeed with multiple draft picks being taken from us. It cuts both ways.

Agreed. I made a post earlier today stating that if BB felt Fields was something he could build around, I'd be happy with trading 2 firsts and 2 seconds. So, Chicago's trade seemed paltry.

With that said, BB had the better first rounder and the assets to make a move. He opted against it.

In BB we trust. But, like I said...this is my line. A lot of smart film guys LOVED Fields and hates Mac Jones. This is a franchise altering pick. I've been a blind BB supporter as long as I can remember.

This pick is the fork in the road. If it works out, awesome. If not, my faith in BB is shook.

This is a very solid pick in terms of risk vs potential value. Not expending any other capital but the pick itself is as good as this could have gone, once Lance and Fields were out of play. If he becomes a legit franchise QB, obviously, that’s great. If he busts, though you never want any first rounder to, it’s not franchise killing. They still have all their draft capital next year and beyond, along with a trade or free agency, with which to course correct. This fell into place pretty well, IMO.

A 15th overall pick is the breaking point in your faith in the guy who's coached/built the team that won 6 Super Bowls?

Look, Jones might be a bust and Fields might be a stud. It could very well happen. But that *this* is your breaking point is odd. It's not like BB had the #1 overall and took Jones there.

I get your POV here, and I wanted them to move up a few spots for Fields too. But it's really: Jones vs. Fields plus (or minus) whatever else you'd have to give up to move up to get him.

And who knows what else that would have been. Now if Fields ends up being that much better than Jones, yeah it's worth it.

Pointing to lost high picks as NBD is odd in that they put themselves behind the eight ball with a series of bad to mediocre drafts between 2016 and 2019, only to be sort of bailed out by a miraculous alignment of salary cap and FA stars this off-season. Losing that 2016 first, trading the 2017 first for one year of Cooks, then underwhelming second rounders in 18-19 caught up to them.

They got a first back for Cooks, though.

He is valuable on a rookie deal. Do I like Mac Jones? No. He was one of the few people I didn't want them to draft. But this can work - Mac keeps the cost at QB down. If you fix his mechanics and throwing motion there is untapped velocity and ball placement to add.

This is disingenuous. You know that this isnt the only reason that the, "in BB we trust" faith is wobbling. At least in regards to the draft.

His success in the draft as of late has been questionable. This pick is huge for the franchise. Of course nobody knows the future, but you dont have to dig very deep on this forum to see even the majority of us laymen folk thought Fields was a superior option.

This isnt the first time BB has bucked standard thinking in the first few rounds.

2019 - DK Metcalf was almost universally ranked as a top 3 WR. We got N'keal Harry in the first instead.

2018 - Drafted Nick Chubbs backup.

2017 - Derek Rivers was our top pick. Know who went within 15 picks after him? Chris Godwin. Kenny Golladay. Shaquill Griffin. Kareem Hunt. John Johnson. Jonnu Smith.

We dont even need to dig into some of the crazy "Ras-I Dowling" type reaches.

I understand that the draft isnt perfect. And I've been willing to shrug it off. But, yes, when you can take a QB that is universally considered a better prospect by large portions of really smart people? And you take someone almost EVERYONE is down on? After the Patriots recent drafting history?

Yes. Make or break time.

The lost draft picks is not the issue. Whiffing on the picks they made is an issue. If Mac Jones is a whiff, this is a magnified version of the Harry, Michel, Rivers picks.

It’s funny reading these threads bc certain posters are so pessimistic in game threads and others are so optimistic. And the opinions on jones are split exactly down that line that I’ve seen

A LOT of deferential in that pc, which I get has value, but you'd like to hear a bit more alpha in those answers. Doesn't really matter, just something that stood out.
