Couldn't the same article be written in reference to almost any team? Unless Howe has more information that the talks are getting serious.

If that is the case, could Gilmore be in the mix for a trade with Atlanta?

Some people say Mac Jones is so good he should be the 2nd & 3rd pick...

Most projections have Fields still available at No. 4, with Trevor Lawrence going first, Mac Jones going second and either Mac Jones or Trey Lance going third.
Others think he looks like a Lego:

Not unless Julio Jones is coming back the other way ... Falcons are in cap-space Hell
They can't trade Julio until June 1st without incurring like a $33m cap hit, so he can't really be part of a trade for #4. JCJ instead of Gilmore maybe...

I've been hearing a lot more about Patriots moving up to somewhere from 7-11 than 4 lately, though.

Add in the report that Atlanta is expected to stand pat and draft Pitts, and the Fields dropping scenario seems very much in play.
I mean that always made the most sense to me, Pitts lining up as the slot receiver in ATL makes that offense a living nightmare for opponents. The defense might need work, but they'd legitimately beat opponents into the ground offensively with Pitts. And with the way that that offense would score, life would get easier on the D as they'd just need to focus on pass defense (a la the Manning Colts).

Agree 100%--for a team that is not drafting a QB (and Atlanta seems like they are rolling with Ryan for now), Pitts is likely the best player in the draft.

Does Dale Arnold have sources?

As much as some people love JG...If the quote of someone saying "we didn't do all this (free agency) for Cam *** Newton" I sure as heck hope they didn't do it for Jimmy *** G either. That would be severely disappointing.

I'll be so fucking pissed if they acquire JG. I can't even put into words how disappointing that would be.

And FUCK trading even a used Q-tip for him.

In the words of the esteemed Cardi B in the influential ouvre 'Motorsport', "That's not a reliable source."

Actually there a good chance this is based on something true - the Patriots & like 5 teams probably have permission to discuss contract parameters with Jimmy G because a trade literally is never happening to any team at his current contract.

If you wanted to throw a little misinformation/smokescreen that might get teams thinking you're not trading up but also don't want to burn any relationships with reporters who actually cover the team...

Anyway, who the fuck knows at this point. Tomorrow night can't come soon enough.

A certain uber driver couldn't agree more.

BB is going into this season with Stidham, Cam, and ? (possibly JG if the trade is cheap enough and can be restructured)

I think he hates having to be held hostage by the QB position.

All the more reason to just draft one in the first round and get it over with. I hope.
Yeah that could make sense, but it's a the opportunity cost of "cost-controlled possible upgrade at QB" v. "other great impact player"

Is there a really good pass rusher on the board?

I think BB might have a chip on his shoulder against QB-centric teams. I am basing this on nothing other than that's what I decided when TB12 left and I'm clutching!

I would be thrilled with Jimmy G on a reasonable contract. Two-headed be QB monster of Cam and Jimmy for 17 games would be great. I’m on board.

JG with this O-Line, 2 headed TE-monster, Agholer, Bourne, and maybe a Waddle? It’s not bad...

I don't even a little want to see the Pats trade for the rights to restructure Jimmy's (ridiculous) contract. With the promise of Fields or Lance or a BB-endorsed Mac Jones still alive, I too would be extremely disappointed to see a trade in the next 22 hours.

But that said, if the first 5 QBs are off the board tomorrow and we haven't picked yet, are there any more realistic opportunities for good QB play in the next two seasons than JG? I still absolutely don't want to give up picks for him nor deal with the $$. Hell, I still think Cam Newton could lead this roster to the playoffs. But outside of squinting to see a Carr or Ryan trade in 12 months I don't have a lot of faith the next great Pats QB is someone outside this draft or Garoppolo unless we're waiting multiple seasons.

I have the utmost faith that the next great Pats QB is not going to be Jimmy G. He's got maybe 20 good games to his credit in his entire career, he's not just constantly hurt, he's also not been consistently good when he's healthy. He might be the next league averagish part-time starter? I'd straight up rather have Cam for all his flaws.

I'm more with you than not, and I'd rather trade next year's first to move up than sign Jimmy for free. I suppose the point I'm really trying to make is the options with upside feel particularly limited. Where we may disagree is on how much upside Garoppolo has - I'm fairly high on 2016 or 2019 Jimmy taking a good Belichick roster far, and in the absence of truly better options I'm willing to overlook injury risk more but you're not wrong that he hasn't consistently been a worldbeater when healthy.

I think many people don't really appreciate the crappiness of a 2.7% career INT rate for a QB in this era, especially for a QB who has played with a lot of surrounding talent and almost never had to throw the ball a lot (only 5 career games with >35 passing attempts). Throw in 19 career fumbles in 32 starts for good measure.

No doubt. Some Pat's fans think he is the savior in waiting but there is a reason SF spent a HUGE amount to replace him.

and to think of all the local angst when he was traded away. Now the narrative is mostly "no thanks", we can do a lot better.

Oh god, no JG please. Injury history alone is enough to stay well away at (almost) any price.

On the other hand, I'm getting more excited about BB landing Fields or Lance.

I kept thinking that they should stay at #15 to pick someone like Tevin Jenkins or trade down to get OL and WR help.

Maybe it's the draft being just a day away but the idea of trading up to grab one of the top QBs—especially the Ohio signal caller—is really tantalizing.

Belichick’s dog’s Instagram liked a comment about trading up in the draft.

Justin Fields confirmed.
