I have no idea if that is good or bad for the Pats.
Neither.
This has basically no impact on whether DEN is likely to take a QB, Lock makes basically nothing, so the money doesn't matter, and most of the QBs are unlikely to start right away, so Teddy on not that much money is a better option than Lock.

DEN just made themselves more flexible. They can take a QB if one falls to them, but if not they have a vet who can hold down the fort.

They can cut Lock for almost nothing--his dead cap hit is like $1.5M.
That's true. But the Denver hierarchy has been pretty consistent in saying that they really like Lock, they just want to bring in competition for him. Lock is seen as Elway's guy and Elway is still influential, while lots of team leaders like Von Miller have also affirmed their support for Lock. Talk is cheap but IMO it would be a surprise if the new GM ended up cutting him or relegating him to third on the depth chart given all those factors.

Also, if you're planning to draft Fields or Lance, why not just have Lock start the season ahead of that guy instead of Bridgewater? I don't think Bridgewater learning a new system is such a clear upgrade over Lock to win a few games if you're just looking for a placeholder.

I don’t think this says much about the odds of Carolina or Denver drafting a QB. Denver gives up very little to upgrade on Lock near-term and Carolina gets a small asset while getting out of some of the money. Only positive to me is that if the price for Teddy was a 6th, then it’s hard to envision a robust market for Jimmy G if that’s the route Bill wants to go...

Maybe they think someone else might believe in Lock. If I could get a QB in the draft and Teddy B for a 6th, then flip Lock for anything 6th round or higher.... I'd feel like I just made a great move. Teddy is better than Lock as a placeholder, and I upgraded draft picks.

If they have a trade for Lock lined up, then I guess that could make sense. But I don't see reason (yet) to believe that to be the case.

I'm not the biggest Drew Lock fan but I'm not really sure Bridgewater - a 29-year-old with a career ANY/A of 5.9 who can't stay healthy and needs to learn the offense from scratch - is a better placeholder who will win you more games for half a season until Fields/Lance takes the reins. From an inside the building perspective, there are also potentially some real costs to swapping Lock for Bridgewater.

Thinking about this more, I'd say that it doesn't rule out Denver taking a QB at 9 but it still should lead us to decrease our estimate of the likeliness of that happening pretty significantly.

TBridge would be a significantly better mentor to a young QB than Drew Lock I would think.

But yeah, I'm on the "doesn't really change the odds" wagon.

Seems like the Panthers are eating a ton of dead $ on this deal & I don't really understand what's happening on TBridge's Spotrac, but so far it seems to indicate 2022 on has been voided as part of the trade.

They absolutely could take a QB in the draft still, but I think at 9 it's pretty low. They need a corner really badly so Surtain/Horn are possibilities and they could draft Micah Parsons as the eventual Von Miller replacement as Miller's deal is up after next year.

Add in the report that Atlanta is expected to stand pat and draft Pitts, and the Fields dropping scenario seems very much in play.

BB is still not going to do it, but I am definitely Charlie Brown now in a full wind up to kick the football as BB plays Lucy to me yet again when I fall on my face tomorrow around 9-930pm.

Maybe just playing devil's advocate, but I think if you're drafting a QB early you want to give them as minimal possible distraction and as smooth a transition into the league as possible. If your competition is Teddy B, you know that at this point in his career his presence is simply affording you time to hold the clipboard and get your feet wet. In reality that's probably also true if your competition is Drew Lock, but I'm sure it feels a lot more like a high stakes QB competition when you're sharing the QB room with a guy who was in your shoes just 2 years ago.

Also Allbright has been reporting for days that the Broncos are unlikely to trade up and he’s as plugged into Denver as anyone. I think this trade confirms that.

No one’s saying that Denver won’t pick a QB if Fields/Lance were available at #9 due to this trade. But there is probably less competition for #4, #7, or #8.

I just spent five minutes watching a Justin Fields highlight video.

I'm with TheRealness - I'm almost in full Charlie Brown mode and Lucy (BB) is holding the football.

Correct, and further, think about what it means for SF. Some are arguing there is no way to easily obtain a cheaper veteran option to replace a released or traded Jimmy...apparently a 6th round pick will get them in that neighborhood.

My tinfoil hat view is that now Denver might have a better chance of a good draft QB falling to them because teams might think they are set at QB and won't spend the capital to jump ahead of them.

This is going to be a fun draft to watch. If they don't trade down, I'm real curious what Denver will do if Fields is still on the board when they are on the clock.

I'm at the level of determining the mitigating factors of Trey Lance's only high school loss...

(It was 25 degrees with 24 mph winds & the other team only passed 3 times all game)

Is Denver is a playoff team with Bridgewater?

I don't think SF can find a cheap veteran that will make them a better team than they are with Jimmy G.

The more I think about it, the more I think the only impact this really has on the Pats is that Jimmy won't be traded to Denver.

I generally agree but I think it makes it slightly less likely. They still may want one....but there is, IMO, less "urgency".

I also find it strange that both CAR and DEN need QBs. Both traded draft capital to get relatively young QBs. Yet in both cases, people are arguing they still may draft QBs.

They very well may but I feel like in both cases, they also may see if their new toys work first.

Maybe a better question is what Denver will do if Lance is still on the board at 9. Would Elway be interested in tinkering with a raw, high ceiling kid like Lance?

It looks like the Panthers paid TBridge $37m for 1 year of ok QB play & a 6th round pick.

To me the Pats have two options here (if they specifically want Lance or Fields):

1) Trade up to #8 so you don't risk Denver picking your guy
2) See what Denver does, then trade up somewhere 10-13 to guarantee no one else does

Denver writers on twitter all seem to think the same thing... Broncos have a QB, maybe 2 that they want, but didn't like the price to trade up. So now they'll stay at 9 and if the guy they like drops to them they'll pick him, otherwise they'll go BPA on whoever slides down due to 4-5 QBs going top 8.

My sense is that every year BB calls the teams ahead of him and behind him to gauge their interest and pricing for trades. This year is more note-worthy in that their starting position is high enough that we are talking about more highly-rated prospects.
It's also more noteworthy since the conventional wisdom of the draft industrial complex is, for the first time in along while, unwaveringly premised on the idea that they *must* draft a QB. Combine the two, and every breathless nitwit is breathlessly nitwitting.

That report though states that Atlanta is expected to stand pat "unless they get a big offer". That's really not news is it? That's different from saying "Atlanta has decided to hold the pick and and take Pitts."

I’m fully prepared to relive the disappointment of draft night 2018 when Lamar Jackson was still on the board for both of the Pats first round picks. I kind of wanted him at 23 and then was cackling with delight when he was still there at 31 (Bill outsmarted everyone!) only to watch the Pats take Sony.

I get this scary feeling that Carolina is now going to threaten to take Fields themselves with the 8th pick to extract a higher price for the Pats to move up.

That's why the deal should be with Detroit

If it were an auction, since Bridgewater's restructured contract is much more favorable than Jimmy G's this certainly it would make one think a realistic price for Jimmy being well less than has been reported (a second).

The reality here is that Niners can decide to just keep him, so I'm not sure how true that really is. I still think they move him, but I am not sure this changes a lot about that choice

God, my productivity for this week has been absolutely destroyed. Still expecting disappointment, but I am all in on how fun the anticipation is.

I don't think anyone who might want JG will have the space to take him as it stands. I don't see many teams cutting good players to make space for that dice roll either. If Jones shines in the preseason, JG may be cut though.

I wonder if this (draft runup/gamesmanship) is fun for Belichick. I could see him loving this, playing high-stakes poker with other teams–or absolutely despising it.

I can't wait for us to move up, think we will pick Fields, only to move back....and then Fields will still be available, and BB pass on him for a Div II player we've never heard of - who will actually turn out to be a great player.
