Pay That Mendes His Money: The Summer 2021 Transfer Thread

I’m curious for the details on the “wage reduction” and “deferments” multiple Barcelona players have agreed to. I’ve never known players or agents to go out of their way to give back money. While the reduction is mentioned first, I’m interested in how much is being deferred and for how long. Is it a few years or will Barca have a Bobby Bonilla/Manny Ramirez dynamic over the coming decades?

In other news, Barcelona have asked Atleti for the loan of Joao Felix. Coincidentally, so have I.
I think we will know Ateltico is really open to loaning him when they leak to the press they are taking to Wolves. Mendes has his working relation with Fosun and Lage had a great deal of success with Felix.

Saul has not yet finalized his deal to Chelsea, which, in turn, implies that Atletico cannot close on Griezmann. Six minutes to go...

I’d have been happy for City to drop everything and loan Felix. I think that kid is going to be a star if he makes better career decisions than going to Atletico. Atletico is a fine club and they’ve done well with strikers but Felix just isn’t the type of player to show well for Simeones system

Moyes goes back to the Czech well that served up steals in Soucek and Coufal to grab Alex Kral (though he was in Russia for Spartak Moscow) on a loan with an option.

Does Gomes simply not fit Benitez's plans, or has his performance dipped? I thought he was considered a steady, solid player for Everton.
tweet turned out to be shenanigans. Gomes stays.

Gomes has been a shell of himself since his maiming by Son, but even taking that into account he never was all that and a bag of chips.

As per transfermarkt, across 4 PL seasons, he's been named to the squad 81 times, made 75 appearances, scored 1 goal and 3 assists.

His defending is poor. He is slow. His purported value is as a CAM/playmaker but those numbers don't lie.

He looks better so far this season in limited minutes. He came on as a second half sub, looked lively and had a very nice assist for the gamewinner in Everton's Carabao Cup win at Huddersfield.

I'm glad he didn't leave just because our depth is not good - in particular the failure to shore up the fullbacks is Football Manager malpractice. #2 on the depth chart at LB, Niels Nkonkou, went out on loan, and the backup to 32-year-old, once-had-his-leg-snapped-in-half Seamus Coleman at RB is Jonjoe Kenny, who fared poorly in loan spells at Schalke and Celtic. Otherwise we'd have to fill in with CB's or wingers. The fans are revolting.

This is a disgusting statement.
How so? Watch the video if you can stomach it. Son knew immediately that he potentially ruined Gomes’ career. I’ve never seen an opposing player so distraught. Gomes has never been the same after that. It may not have been malicious, but it was horrific and in the parlance of soccer calling it a “maiming” (meaning a player can’t ever recover to the level of fitness that allowed him to be a top-flight professional) seems totally appropriate.

Watch it and see that Son tackles Gomes from directly behind, sliding into the back of Gomes' leg, with Gomes between Son and the ball, and the ball a couple of feet in front of Gomes when Son goes in.

It was deeply cynical. Son had to know that there was no chance at the ball. That the collision with Aurier made the injury as bad as it was is beside the point - Son set things in motion.

And, when looking it up right now, the video came up alongside one called "All 3 Red Cards Son Heung min 2019." As has been discussed here before, he's a dirty player. Almost every player with a long career has at least one bad red card in their body of work if you look hard enough, but this is not an anomaly.

yeah I mean Son is such a dirty player that his red card for that tackle was overturned.

Now, I also don’t think Son is some totally clean innocent player, especially under early Jose it looked like he tried to play with an edge.

But, he’s not a dirty player anymore than 80 percent of the league. Every red he’s been shown is something I could find on almost any player. And there’s not much shithousery that he gets away with or anything. He’s just a pretty standard acting premier league player.

I don't get why Atletico Madrid gives up on Felix so soon. Why not keep him to develop?
Atletico is keeping Joao Felix, and I think Simeone sees his value and potential. For the first two or three months of last season, Joao Felix was arguably the best player in La Liga not named Messi. He lost his form during the year, perhaps due to Simeone's tactic or in large part due to the injury he sustained that ended up requiring surgery. The problem at Atletico is also that Simeone wanted De Paul (a signing I support), Lemar has emerged as one of the team's most dynamic players, Llorente and Carrasco are outstanding, and Correa has been magical.

A few other transfers at the deadline worth mentioning (apologies again if something was already covered):

  • Griezmann back to Atleti deal is a loan with obligation to buy for €40M. That's €80M below the €120M Barca paid two years ago. Nevertheless, I'm looking at all Barca sales purely as reductions of financial obligations and this deal likely clears at least €65M on the books. The fact that it's going to improve Atleti immensely is truly secondary. But my word what horribad business. I also read an article that says that Barca was forced to pay €300M due to the tampering litigation in connection with the original Atleti --> Barca transfer. What in the actual fuck was the previous Board doing!???!?
  • Luuk de Jong goes on a loan transfer from Sevilla to Barca. Couldn't find a fee. Smart biz by Barca.
  • Sarabia going from PSG to Sporting. Odd man out with Mr. Messi coming in.
  • Saul to Chelsea. Jeez, the Blues are a friggin monster this year.
  • Tomiyasu to Arsenal. Damnit--nice bit of biz from the Gooners.
  • Aurier and Spurs mutually agree to terminate contract. Not what I expected, but does clear out the logjam at RB at the Lane.
  • Bellerin to Betis. Betis has been doing great biz for a few years now. Would honestly like to hear what our Gooner friends here have to say about this deal.
  • Vinicius to PSV. Rooting for this guy--I feel like he still has some potential to make some noise in his career.
  • Camavinga to Madrid for €31M. Seems like really good business to me--this guy apparently has a ton of potential.
  • Ilaix to RBL for €16M. Sad to see him leave Barca, but he didn't leave the club much choice. Will be rooting for him to succeed.

Unfortunately I have to turn off social media and crawl in a hole for work. When I can I’ll post the receipts. Son is a hothead and has a history. Card shouldn’t have been overturned either fwiw.

No, he didn't. As you suggest, watch the video. It was the Aurier contact that led to the gruesomeness. There was a multiple second delay between's the tackle and Son's awareness of the injury.

It may not have been malicious, but it was horrific
I agree 100%.

I disagree 100%. And attributing a "maiming" to an individual is disgusting.

oops, thought it was still a Felix-Griezmann swap

PSV fans are glad to have him, I've been reliably told. While PSV have done well the past few years (4th in 19-20, 2nd last season, currently leading with 9 points from 3 matches), they have lost A TON of talent the past 3 years, even by Eredivise standards: Malen to Dortmund, Dumfries to Inter, Ihatteren to Juve, Chucky Lozano to Napoli, Bergwijn to Spurs, de Jong to Sevilla, and Angelino to City. Their ability to rebuild on the fly is incredible, so they surely see something in Vinicius.

Tangentially, Mario Gotze is currently plying his trade for PSV as a very effective rotation player (5 goals & 6 assists in 17 matches last season).

Man, what went wrong with Gotze's career? Circa 2013, I don't think anyone would have predicted "effective Erededvisie rotation player" as his likely trajectory.

Here's a short blurb on it. He was diagnosed with myopathy, which is a category of conditions that attack/weaken muscle fiber. I'm not sure exactly what type of myopathy he's been diagnosed with, but it certainly appears that it will permanently limit his playing career. So unfortunate.
