Yeah. Nothing like Ramos doing everything that deserves a red but instead staying on while your club’s best player slinks off injured. Fuck that guy. (I’d take him on my team in heart beat.)

Absolute legend and absolute shitheel. Begrudging respect for one of the biggest villains. Madrid's D will struggle mightily without his leadership.

Most of you guys know more about the sport than I do (after all, I'm the only Palace fan here which probably says something by itself) - certainly the history of players and managers since I began paying a bit of attention about 10 years ago.

After the Nuno shitshow - and I thought he was probably the best call - but it seems he was just using Palace for a better spot (not too surprising)....they're now linked with Lucien Favre. Not often that you get a former Dortmund boss linked with Palace, but on the other hand, we thought we had a coup by being the only club on Frank deBoer, and we know how that worked out. And it doesn't seem like the sort of clubs that normally hire former Dortmund managers are burning a trail to his house.

So, people who know more than me. Should I get my hopes up for Favre (or is this a trap of an appointment), or more smartly brace myself for the eventual hiring of Sean Dyche or Eddie Howe, either of whom would want me to get Parrish groveling back to Hodgson?

Not sure what Nuno is doing (or his agent), but that respect I had for him at Wolves is starting to wear off

I would lean on the side of getting your hopes up. Favre has a track record of doing very well within the first couple seasons with a number of mid-table or upper-mid-table clubs in Germany and France and his sides tend to play attractive but pragmatic football. De Boer seemed like a tactical dogmatist who had only really managed from a position of league dominance at Ajax and had already bombed at Inter when out of that comfort zone.

I think Favre will still have his work cut out for him as it seems like Palace needs somewhat of a squad makeover in general and some of the older stalwart players may not be great fits for his style of play. But he has had success building teams in the past, many of his past clubs were total messes when he arrived. All in all, I'd say he is still a bit of a gamble just because he has never managed in England but one that represents a calculated risk with real upside not a stupid roll of the dice.

Thanks for this. I do have high hopes and am genuinely more excited about his appointment than any of the other names being floated around, but like you say, the squad situation is kind of a mess right now. I’m hoping having him as manager could help with recruitment.

The most Palace thing ever would be him not getting a visa.

Oh fucking hell now it seems like Favre has walked away at the last minute, kind of like Nuno did. This club, man…why didn’t I go see a Chelsea or, fuck, even a West Ham game for my first one?

My U12 Rec team was a solid 2-2-4 this season. I could Ted Lasso the crap out of Palace this season.

It’s pretty clear that Richmond is Crystal Palace. I don’t know why I didn’t think of Lasso myself, but if you get a call from Steve Parrish, you should take it. I’d take 10 points from every 8 matches.

Is there anyone realistically left that would both a) Say yes to Spurs and b) Not have Spurs fans saying "Hard pass?" It feels like the intersection in that Venn diagram is very small at best, and may not exist at worst.

Potter and Ten Haag are the names reasonably linked to Spurs that I think most fans would be pretty psyched about.

are we sure Benitez is still good?

have to feel for Everton fans, b'c I see another round of turnover for that roster
There was a ton of vitriol from the Everton fans over Rafa … to the extent he was requiring police protection.

I think he is what he always was … he’ll create a disciplined , organized team lacking in scoring panache.

On the one hand I get it. He loves Liverpool … still lives there and wanted desperately to get back in the PL. on the other hand he’s seriously tarnishing his Reds legacy with this move. Shades of Michael Owen.

I don't think it's anything like the Owen move to be honest. He's an out-of-work manager with an opportunity to step into managing a Premier League side with substantial financial backing close to where he lives.

I think it's a poor decision on his part not because of his Liverpool legacy - IMO this changes nothing about that - but because it's obvious the Everton supporters want nothing to do with him, and will make his life hell at the first sign of his side struggling (or even before it). From the sounds of it, Moshiri and Brands forced this hire through.

The Guardian makes it sound like Moshiri took the lead on this hire, which fits with earlier stories that Moshiri was set on a star manager, not an up-and-comer.

The Guardian also drops this tasty nugget:

Animosity towards the 61‑year‑old has already spilled over into personal abuse on banners left outside Goodison Park, while another left near his family home in Wirral warned: “We know where you live”, although it was left outside the wrong house.

As mentioned I can see Rafa’s reasoning … it does make sense for him. But surely, he of all managers has to realize the difficulty of winning over the Everton fans. As for Owen, I have to admit , not being from Merseyside that I have no clue as to the depth of the inter city rivalries. I have no dislike at all for the Toffies (Pickford and Fujimora not withstanding). ManU on the other hand.

Patson Daka to Leicester from RB Salzburg. Vardy has to slow down eventually, right? Or maybe get the odd game off? Daka ripped it up in Austria last year, but it’s probably best that he can ease into the EPL as Vardy’s understudy.

Kelechi competition? Or perhaps Daka is the primary target for the Carabao Cup and UEL competitions
I think Rodgers developed a really good role for Iheanacho the second half of last season - second striker/wide attacking mid who runs into the space Vardy creates by stretching defenses vertically.

Daka profiles as that speed demon, but of course, will have a lot to learn from Vardy in terms of savvy and cleverness.

Daka has arguably better records at Salzburg than Haaland and Mané did; for the price, seems like a great gamble for Leicester.

Yeah that too.

I mean he should be one of the more coveted players in the world given his age. Can play behind the striker anywhere across the attacking 3 in Ole’s formation. Going to get you 20+ goals and assists combined.

Covid has worked to United’s benefit here.

And homegrown?
I don't think he is for Champions League purposes since he doesn't have 3 years in England between 15 and 21. He might do for Premier League purposes since I don't think there is a lower bound, so he definitely has more than 3 years in England if you go younger than 15.

Is homegrown an issue from United right now? I count at least eight players who might fit that profile, most of them are young and pretty proven.

Nah it’s not an issue but more importantly, if he does light up the Premier League he’s less likely to want a move to Real/Barca.
