Schrager to me is just a guy who LOVES coaches and thinks almost every single one of them, especially the new ones, are going to be awesome and do amazing things and then tell personal anecdotes about how warm and engaging they are. I don't find him particularly interesting to listen to.

I am not a fan of Schrager, but he seems like the ideal radio/TV/podcast wingman--there to agree with the lead most of the time, not overshadow the personality of that lead, and throw in his occasional personal anecdote. Probably why Bill likes having him on the show.

Everyone loves Cousin Sal, and rightly so...but the guy is a Cowboys and Mets fan. Slightly better than being a Cowboys and Yankees fan, I guess, but what other front-running teams could he have chosen to root for in his youth (which was presumably mostly in the 80s)? The Lakers? The (Edmonton) Oilers? This is not behavior that ought to be tolerated.

I'll give you the Cowboys. But born in 1971, the Mets of his formative years were abysmal. Well past the Amazin' years and way before there were any seeds of what would happen in 1986. In fact, other than '86, being a Mets fan has sucked. Growing up in NY, picking that team and sticking with them while the Yanks were the Yanks, that makes up for adopting the Cowboys.

The Mets have been good for like 2 years over the previous 40 years. They are a joke in baseball and rightfully so. So I wouldn't classify that as front running. If anything, it's the opposite.

And Dallas has less playoff wins in the 2000s than the Jags. They have been an absolute joke, too, since the mid 90s.

Hard to say he's a front running slob. If he was a Dodgers and Patriots fan it would be suspect.

How old do you think Sal was when he formed his real sporting allegiances? I'm guessing it was probably right around the time that the Mets were really good, and the Cowboys...well, they've always been the Cowboys, even in their late-80s doldrums. The point is really that I'm automatically suspicious of anyone - in sporting terms, at least - who a) has his favorite teams in different cities without any natural reason for that (e.g., it's not like Sal ever lived in Dallas, did he?), and b) has identified with at least one team that is a mainstream, "public" team (to put it in gambling terms). Did Sal grow up in NYC? I'm guessing the Mets are his real team, and the Cowboys were a youthful affectation he stuck with.

(Obviously, he scores points for at least being consistent and not jumping from team to team as a front-runner; there's no way he'd be credible as a podcast host and guest if he had become a Patriots fan in the 2000s, for example.)

Younger than the 14 years old he'd need to be to make your argument valid. If you're as big a sports nut as he is, my guess is some time around 9 or 10 at the latest.

SSS but I also know a handful amount of people from New York that are Cowboys fans because their parents were.

I also don't really care but you're straining really hard to make something I'm not sure of try to stick.

You can't have it both ways. If he's born in 1971, I doubt he became a Cowboys fan when they won Super Bowl XII in 1977 (early 1978). He was 6. But if you say his sports devotions began that early, then he rooted for a number of AWFUL Mets teams, including the one that season that traded away Tom Seaver.

So let's say his fandom started when he was 10 or 11. Then he rooted for some bad Mets teams that would soon start showing some promise, as they started to come together in late 83, then became a competitive team in 1984 (losing to the Cubs), and 1985 (losing to the Cardinals), before finally winning in 1986. Then there followed several years of them frustratingly underperforming.

Which would be pretty much the same of the Cowboys he started rooting for if he did so in the early 80s. Because those Cowboys went to three straight NFC Championship games and lost all three (to the Eagles in 1980/81; to the Niners (THE CATCH!) in 1981/82; and to then Redskins in 1982/83). Then they went into a decline that eventually led to Tom Landry's dismissal before Jimmie Johnson was able to restore them to championship level in the early to mid-90s.

So I agree his fandom doesn't seem to be a case of front-running.

FYI, I'm just a few years older than Sal and grew up in North Jersey and thus in the NYC media market, and my block had a number of Cowboys, Vikings, Raiders, and Steelers fans. You know why? Because the Jets and Giants were terrible and didn't sell out, and so their home games were often blacked out on TV. You know whose games they showed instead whenever possible? The Cowboys, the Vikings, the Raiders, and the Steelers. Many of those years the Jets and Giants might have had seven TV games a piece while the Cowboys, Vikings, Raiders, and Steelers were on constantly.

Accusing Sal of being a bandwagon fan is weird when 99% of his jokes seem to be self-deprecating, and for the entire time he's been on Simmons pod, he has been cynically grumbling about the Cowboys.

On this week's Guessing the Lines, Bill and Sal were bashing "analytics" for a few minutes. House swooped in with a very articulate explanation of how analytics can be best used. As soon as he was done, Sal and Bill went back to mindlessly bashing "nerds" and House wisely checked out of the conversation.

I was watching games with a bunch of friends on Sunday, and one who grew up a (baseball and football) Cardinals fan in St. Louis remarked that he also had affinity for the Vikings, because he thought their purple uniforms and especially their helmet were the coolest in the NFL. Their old 70s era togs might have been the best at the time and were for sure in the top five at the very least.

And they had Ahmad Rashad and Sammy White.

That kind of ends it, for me. People become fans of specific teams for all kinds of reasons, and if you're still a fan of a team like the Cowboys (3 playoff wins, all in the wild card round, in the past 25 years) in 2022, it's hard for me to judge you harshly at this point. Since 2000, the only teams with fewer playoff wins are Washington, Cleveland, Miami and Detroit. Even taking into account the moderate success they've had in the regular season over that same time (11th in wins), whatever the initial reason was, he's certainly not a frontrunner now.

Is it driving anyone else insane that Simmons has been using the same pre-recorded ad copy for Simplii Safe where he messes up ever/even in the first line for about a month now?

What happened to his friend John the Yankee fan lawyer? He seems to have somewhat disappeared in the last year. I was looking forward to hearing him moan about the Yankees' sweep.

He said something stupid on Twitter and found himself under attack a few months ago, so he may have taken a step back from the Simmons spotlight. But he's tweeting about the Yankees again, so maybe he'll be back next season.

Edit: This Reddit thread reminded me. He complained about the Yankees' Twitter feed tweeting facts about gun violence when he was "trying to enjoy the game" and got dragged.

He hasn’t been on basically at all over the last 5 years or so, has he (at least compared to earlier in Simmons’ podcasting career when the “Heeeey Johnny!” segment seemed pretty frequent). My guess is he and Simmons aren’t as close anymore for whatever reason, or he just told Simmons he doesn’t want to be on the podcast anymore.

Thanks - for a guy working outside entertainment, it makes sense that he’d opt for deep cover when there’s heat.

He hasn’t been on nearly as much in recent years but would be good for at least two appearances a year. YED was usually an annual occasion. I figured Simmons has a lot of new, higher profile people already in regular slots, so there’s a time squeeze, but nattysez laid out the probable root cause.

I wish Simmons had high profile people who were actually good. Mahoney is awesome, but the NBA talk 3 games into the season is brutal. The NFL is the golden goose of content, NCAA football is huge, and the World Series is literally happening and all Simmons did this week was talk about the Lakers and Durant, with a little bit of surface discussion about football. Woof. And I like Schrager on GMF because that is a fun show. But million dollar picks is a tired bit that was never good to begin with. At least when PMT talks about gambling, they are honest about how ridiculous it is and how tough it is.

When Simmons loses a bet, he STILL explains it away for one reason or another. After the fact. As if gambling can be figured out. It can't. And Simmons has been gambling for 30 years and he still talks like he can figure it out. You can't figure it out. The entire point is that it can't be figured out.

Solak is getting worse and worse. He knows more about football than I will ever know, but he's exhausting. His new tic is to just list random guys on every team to prove he knows every player on every team. We get it Ben, you know the players names, you don't need to list 9 players on every defense you're talking about. It adds nothing. Solak got ruined for me when someone on Reddit called him the NFL's Ben Shapiro.

The only thing that is the must listen on the BS pod is guess the lines.

I didn't listen to the Friday pod in large part because "NBA Panic Watch" was in the title. The Spurs and the Jazz, two teams he identified before the season as teams tanking for Victor, have better records right now than the Warriors, Mavericks, Pelicans, Clippers, Heat, Sixers, Raptors, and OH BY THE WAY, Celtics. Does anyone really want to read a lot into what's occurred in a sport six games into an eighty-two game season? If all you do is cover the NBA, you have to, because what else can you discuss. But if you purport to offer opinions on all sports, why would you spend so much time on the NBA, when, as you wrote, the World Series is happening, and both NCAA Football and the NFL are deep into their seasons.

Anyone who reads a lot into teams either quick or slow out of the gate after a week is an idiot. How determinative was the Celtics slow start last season? And their struggles lasted much longer than a week or two.

True story. Simmons was absolutely ready to write the Warriors on Thursday night when they were playing the Heat. Then they had a big fourth quarter and beat the Heat. Now Golden State is fine and there is no reason to worry.

Could that be any dumber? I really don't think so.

He didn't say that were fine, he pointed a bunch of reasons to be concerned including Klay and Draymond both moving into different phases of their career and how they adapt to that mentally will be something to watch. Did you even listen to the pod...or are we just writing some Simmons fan fiction to confirm what we want to believe about him? This thread is so, so bad.

This thread is on par with Simmons then, I guess.

He was ready to write the Warriors off and then they won and then he said he wasn't writing them off. It was the 5th game of the season. You're defending this analysis? Talk about so, so bad. You resemble.

Solak is getting worse and worse.
He has some really weird vocal crutches that (I guess?) come from talking to scouts or something. For example, "dudn't" just does not sound right coming from someone like him. He's extremely grating and I pretty much skip any segment he's on.

Bill opened this morning’s pod with Raja Bell to talk about the Nets situation. Highly recommended.

Bell is really a fantastic listen, and he was perfect for the discussion given his relationship with Nash, and his insight into locker room dynamics and the effect of a constant distraction like Kyrie.

Bill thinks this has been a "terrible" NFL season, which I suspect is based solely on his abysmal betting record. If he actually cared about the excitement of the games themselves, he'd say it's been a fun season. If you want to grouse about the generally poor QB play, that's fine, but it's undeniable that the Sunday "witching hour" has been absolutely wild the past few weeks.

It's pretty hilarious that last week he claimed that "we've never had" the playoff seedings set so early in a season and ONE WEEK LATER he's saying the "NFL is drunk." He is recency bias personified.

If you judge based on exciting games then yeah, if you judge based on quality of play then it's been terrible. Most of the exciting games that come down to the wire are happening because both teams make mistake after mistake when they had a chance to put the game away, especially some of the OT games.

I think it's the gambling. Bill hitched his wagon to Carolina at the beginning of the season. He stuck with them until Week 7, despite the fact that Carolina was horrendous. Then week 7, they go out and PJ Walker all over TB and then they lose a tough one to Atlanta in Week 8 but PJ was good. Carolina looked good after the Rhule era.

Simmons went back hard with Carolina, putting bets on them on Friday in teasers and a big one straight up.

Then Carolina was down 35-0 at halftime on Sunday. And he's getting murdered on his "Million Dollar Picks" basically across the board. He's getting embarrassed, obviously he hates this season.

And I just don't understand this view that because defenses are playing well, it means it's bad football.

Not all is due to defenses playing well. Aaron Rodgers 3 INTs last week were bad football. Mac Jones and the Pats general offense is more bad football than catching buzzsaw defenses every week. Some defenses are playing exceptionally well and there’s been a lot of bad offense.

A big part of his rationale was that the Pats were a team with a good offensive line.

I shit you not.
I am probably reading too much into it, but I took a lot of that podcast as window dressing for a legit rumor he's heard through his rich guy friend group. He's connected at the ownership type level and probably texts a lot with the Damon/Affleck type fans who are probably famous enough to be in the Brady orbit. IIRC, he compared the rumor to his leaks of the Vegas NBA expansion and Sarver's unwillingness to sell to the Disney guy, which both apparently came true.

Bill’s inability to pronounce “Monk” isn’t a big deal obviously, but it’s funny to me every time. I had the same reaction Ryen did during the most recent episode. It was so wrong that I did a double take.

Could anyone follow Bill's Aaron Judge take? He didn't 'save baseball' in NY so he should go to SF and split the spotlight with Curry? For big tech investment reasons? That made no sense to me. Isn't he already the face of the sport and the Yankees? Seems like a good idea to stay and do that.

I did enjoy when Ryen said 'are you ready for a question' and then Bill launched into a 5 minute rant and Ryen said in a low voice 'so that's a no?' Laughed out loud. They didn't mention Ryen's new deal either. Seems like something worth getting into.

You can tell Peyton and Eli are unfamiliar with Bill and they’re kind of marveling at how his brain works.
