It’s worth noting that any prospect not in the player pool has to be traded as a PTBNL.

So while, I wanted to expect much, it might be a little more interesting than you’d think based on the PTBNL tag.

I vaguely remember Opening Day, when the Red Sox had a really convincing win over somebody (I think they had birds on their hats) and the offense was positively dominant. And Kevin Pillar had three hits and three RBI and I had to ponder whether or not I needed to continue hating him.

Feels like a billion years ago.

Who gets to start the appreciation thread?
We just got one of the 10 best 30-game stretches of Pillar's career in terms of offensive performance, and I'm still mad about it.

He posted a line 30 points above his career OBP and 60 points above his career SLG.

It's in quite a few threads and elsewhere on the internet.

You can be a Sox fan and not know who Osich is, but the Pillar discussion is all over the place and the internet
I mean...it was 3 days ago in a season where a lot of people aren't paying close attention. Is there any need to be smarmy about it? He came out and asked point blank what he missed. Just friggin' answer it or don't, you don't need to question his fandom bona fides.

There are a few interesting Rockies prospects not in their player pool that would needed to be added to their 40-man roster this winter.

1B/3B Colton Welker, ranked by MLB as their #8 prospect, had a down 2019 and is blocked by Arenado at third and McMahon at first, if that’s how they play it. He was a surprising non-add to this year’s player pool and I’m not sure what’s up with him. Helcris Olivarez, a 20-year-old LHP starter with “what appears to be massive potential when you see his arm strength, frame, and proclivity for spin,” is ranked #17, and I could see Bloom being high on a guy like that. And then there’s Riley Pint, a former #4 overall pick and Top 50 prospect whose career has been derailed by command issues after oblique and shoulder injuries, but still has incredible stuff and is only 22.

Hard to say what one month of Kevin Pillar is worth, but a team’s 17th-best prospect doesn’t seem too outlandish to me.

The cradle of the game.
Why the Pillar hatred? What did I miss?
Thank you for asking. I had the same question.

Of course the facts are irrelevant. Roenicke strongly backed Pillar as a person, a teammate, and a leader. Loved watching him play and glad he stood for what he believed.

Sorry. I guess I am at a stage where what's going on in the world matters more to me than what goes on with the baseball team. I now understand better that everyone is not in the same place that I am in and might not be aware of Pillar's comments.

I guess the Sox are between a rock and a hard place with Pillar's and Brasier's comments. Directly address and respond to it and it might make people like me feel a bit better about the team. Respond to it obliquely and it might satisfy some fans but still remain in the shadows for those who were not aware of the remarks.

Who are you arguing against? And what point do you think you're making? More pointedly, what are those beliefs that you feel he stood up for?

I ask because, from where I stand, this looks a lot like trolling.

Not trolling, lots of hate for Pillar and people asking why. Just as others, instead of spelling it out I pointed to Roenicke's comments - which had not been mentioned and I hold as a better reflection of Pillar than anything said here.

Example from here:

https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2020/08/boston-red-soxs-ron-roenicke-defends-kevin-pillar-after-controversial-comments-nobody-should-ever-question-what-type-of-guy-this-is.html
Roenicke passionately defended the veteran, expressing his displeasure about how Pillar’s comments were represented.

“I know there have been some negative things said the last few days about comments that he made,” Roenicke said. “If people want to get on him for the way he plays or something like that, okay, but nobody should ever question what type of guy this is. This is a really good person. He’s a great teammate. He was a great leader for these guys. I felt bad for him because it really bothered him, the comments that were made."

His original comments here (which I think were on point and just fine, no harm intended):

“Is it more important that we uplift Jackie because he’s the only one? My answer would be no,” Pillar replied. “I think it’s important that we uplift everyone in this room. Jackie is our only African-American baseball player on this team, but like they mentioned, we do have a coach, we have a trainer, there are teams that have quite a bit more African-Americans on their team. But what we did today was 1,000% in support of Jackie Bradley Jr. (and others), because this is how they felt. We wanted to show them support, that they weren’t in this alone.”

“It’s a touchy subject, but I don’t think right now, as a country, we should be necessarily identifying individual groups of people that need to be uplifted,” Pillar added. “I think the vast majority of us would like to encourage to uplift everyone and support everyone.”

You are entitled to your opinion that his comments were "on point", but many found them insensitive and offensive, and as was noted in the other thread this isn't the first time Pillar said something massively offensive so he gets less slack here. The last sentence of that quote is a massively dickish thing to say in the context of a team decision on whether to support the lone black player on the team who didn't want to play following the shooting of yet another black man by the police. Why would Pillar think that uplifting and supporting JBJ in a time of need has some sort of negative impact on another group of people such that we cannot single him (and the black coaches and trainers) out? We can't take a second to listen to and acknowledge that black people's experiences with the police may impact the way they react to something like the shooting of Jacob Blake differently, because we might hurt white people's feelings if we do so? This is the same line of reasoning used to malign and misrepresent what Black Lives Matter means, and the fact that the Red Sox said nothing about it makes me sick.

Second, whether or not Pillar intended any offense is, or at least should be, irrelevant. We need to stop excusing people saying insensitive and hurtful things because they didn't mean it.

I think that this has degrees and this is where context matters. Knowing Pillar's past comments I don't think it's difficult to surmise that he's at the best just being insensitive.... but there are definitely times when attempts at trying to be sensitive (especially with older people) can twist them up and they end up saying some unintended horrible things. I've got a lot of flat-out racists in my extended family... but I lucked out to have a really great father that I never, ever ever heard anything negative or derogatory come out of his mouth about minorities of any sorts. BUT.... he would occasionally start to use the word he heard as a kid for "blacks" which I can't and won't use (not the one ending with "er" but the one ending with "oe") and then stop and start to say African American and then say "the blacks" with a large question mark at the end. He was trying to be sensitive but knew that he didn't have the language down correctly but was aware that it mattered. He was trying and knew he needed to. He would also ask some questions that could be seen as insensitive but were honest inquiries, and because of his history and the context... nobody was ever offended... just the occasional eye-roll.

I've now seen two articles that claim in the lede that the PTBNL in the trade is known... but the articles don't actually say who the PTBNL is. Anyone know anything yet (I mean this in the general sense... not just specifically for the PTBNL)?

It makes sense that both sides already know who it is since you couldn't trade anyone not on the 60 man roster. They're just waiting for that deadline to expire. Given the lack of pitching that Bloom got back yesterday, I suspect that its some AA arms.

The teams know who the PTBNL is but that player is not on the 60-man roster and is therefore ineligible to be traded, hence no names announced until after the season. There's nothing to be gained by leaking it, so they don't do that either.
