I don't think he would be outing or burning his source if he simply acknowledged that his early reports contained factual inaccuracies and corrected the record.  That's what he should have done, and he should absolutely be held accountable for failing to take that simple step.  If he's willing to surrender any professional integrity to keep his sources, so be it... but we should definitely take him to task for it.

Sure, the damage has been done to Brady's reputation, but there's no reason why we shouldn't pursue a pound of flesh from the league and its mouthpieces.  We could call it the asterisk on the asterisk next to Brady's bio.

I agree with you PP, but all Mort is doing is betting on the fact that annoying Kraft and Patriots Nation is less damaging than losing his sources in the league office.  Not much of a choice if you're in his shoes.  He becomes the next Peter King/John Tomase/Tom Jackson persona non grata in Foxboro, but otherwise suffers no real professional damage.  He hardly ever breaks NEP news anyways, so no big deal to him.  He remains a sympathetic figure amongst the majority of his peers.

Sucks, but thems the breaks...

WEEI reporting that Mort called Christian Fauria around 11:15AM (Fauria left the booth to take the call off-air) today to ask what he should do about the tweet.  Fauria says he discussed it with Mort and suggested he just remove/delete it.  By the time Fauria got back to the booth, the tweet had disappeared.
I'm trying to process this statement. Calling Fauria for advice on anything seems like a bad decision but this makes no sense at all, I simply don't get it.

I don't think he's lazy in the slightest. As to unwilling, outside of outing or burning his source what would you like him to do in public? Apologize? Ship has sailed?

He doesn't need to dig deeper he knows exactly what happened and is protecting his sources and his career.
Fair. And I'll raise you one- would not be surprised if some NFL HQ folks have actually threatened him if he looks into it more deeply. It's Chinatown.

I turned on EEI on my lunch break, and they were talking about this.  I legit thought they were joking.  Why would Mort call Fauria of all people for advice on this?

Then, I was lured into a discussion between Fauria, Dickerson, and Merloni saying that Brady should just accept 1 game and get it over with.  They feel that if the NFL offers 1 game, and Brady refuses to take it, it'll piss off the judge and he'll end up getting 4 games anyways.

I also thought it was a joke, until they played a recording of Fauria telling the story.  There's also mention if it on one of Fauria's social media pages, with out any inclusion of emoticons or "j/k" or anything else to convey that it's only a goof.

Don't you think that's a possibility?

As I mentioned yesterday during an extensive interview with @LeBatardShow, I made a
mistake in not clarifying, via Twitter, my tweet from months ago regarding the
sourced information I reported about under-inflated footballs. After reflecting upon
yesterday’s conversation, I decided to delete the initial tweet today. It’s a
step I could have taken a while ago, when I had clarified the information on
other platforms. Lesson learned.

Awesome. Show everyone where you clarified it because obviously no one remembers.

Mort has tweeted a bunch of times tonight (post DFG tweet deletion) after being mostly dormant for months.

All replies to his tweets are DFG-related and are just CRUSHING him.

I'm not handy with the Twitter API, but I'd love to see a data visualization of Mort's tweets before and after the 11/12 tweet.

Like your article that's still up on ESPN? Nice work cleaning up your mess, Mort.

“Other media outlets including ESPN, had this allegation and pursued this allegation for months, and it just didn’t meet the standard in terms of what you needed to report it, and the Boston Herald evidently felt they had met the standard to report it. They need to come out and say, ‘We stand by our story’ or they need to have a retraction and apology and deal with the consequences of it, but certainly it’s damaging to the Boston Herald at this point, especially if they stay silent on the subject.”

Where are you today, Mort? Haven't seen you on camera or on Twitter today. Have anything to say? Perhaps Kensil is at the Hamptons on vacation?

Lemme get this straight.. the #1 NFL reporter for ESPN for decades took yesterday off? I never saw him on camera, he never made one tweet and he wrote zero words about the biggest story of the year, a story that he kicked off himself. Was he told by ESPN to take the day off or was this self imposed?

EEI said they talked to him this morning since he said he would go on the air after "this was over", but now he is saying it isn't over because of the appeal. So maybe they can schedule him for sometime in the spring of 2017.

He told them that yesterday was a scheduled day off for him which is why he wasn't anywhere on the story.

He was on ESPN radio yesterday afternoon, I believe Lebatard's show. He kept it vanilla for the most part during the few minutes I caught, basically what he has heard from lawyers regarding appeal timeline.

I heard this as well. I think Sedano was hosting. I don't remember him saying anything of note.

Yeah a little later EEI also reported they heard he was on the radio in the afternoon so Mort wasn't exactly telling the truth to them.

If Martha Raddatz was in a diving bell at the bottom of the Indian ocean and the US started carpet bombing Syria, I think ABC would find a way to get her to a phone and do some reporting. "Scheduled day off." So obviously BS. They told him to sit it out and so he did. He has no credibility on this story and everybody knows it.

If he hadn't been/continued on being such a fucktard about this, I'd almost feel sorry for him. He's just kind of hiding under the covers at this point, hoping he'll wake up one day and find everyone else has forgotten about it. If he saw how many times Ben Drieth still gets mentioned here, he'd know that's a vain hope...
