Potential NY Roster Spot Upgrades

With the trading deadline two weeks away and with the AL East race looking like it will take 105 wins at least, I thought I'd go through the Yankee roster and pick the possible spots for upgrade.

Locked in (16): Sanchez, Bird, Torres, Didi, Gardner, Stanton, Hicks, Judge.
Severino, Tanaka, Sabathia, Green, Holder, Robertson, Betances, Chapman.

So that's 8 position players (including DH), 3 SPs and 5 relievers. The other spots:

3B: Andujar has really impressed with the bat as a 23 year old rookie, 41 extra base hits in 83 games and a .815 OPS. He hasn't drawn many walks but I think that could easily come later if he makes it more of a priority. His defense is the big question, though, especially his range, and while he could switch to another position like 1B or corner outfield, that would obviously make his bat less valuable. Drury and Wade are also in the picture here, one or both may be dealt this month.

Bench: Let's assume this is 4 players even though it has more often been 3 for NY this year. Romine, Frazier, Wade, Drury, Walker, Austin, and McKinney are all on the 40 man and all deserving to different degrees.

SP: This is clearly NY's biggest weakness, they have yet to adequately replace Montgomery at the #5 spot and Gray has been a major disappointment so far at #4. Justus Sheffield will likely get a shot at the #5 spot soon if he survives the deadline, and Cashman's main focus will be adding someone from outside, good luck with that but he has tons of trading chips.

Bullpen: NY has 5 or 6 guys here who are fantastic, but what they would love is a better lefty to replace Shreve, and if Cashman ends up frustrated at the market for SPs and Machado, this may be the big move this month.

The one wild move I've thought about but eventually rejected is Salvador Perez to bump Romine. I rejected it because his contract seems a bit too big for this role, signed through 2021 for about $40M combined from 2019-2021.

Great analysis, Jon. I guess it's up to Cashman and the trade market to see if there is a starting pitcher upgrade out there.
During this four-day lull in the pennant race, my thoughts turn to whether the Yankees' roster, as currently constructed, can keep up with Boston. And whether the Red Sox can sustain their .700 pace.
If the Yanks need a lefty reliever who can impact games, and the trade market doesn't provide one, then maybe they need to replace Shreve with Justus Sheffield. The experience for two months might enhance Sheffield's ability to start games next year because he will have to throw more strikes as a reliever and rely on his breaking stuff.
Erratic defense at third base and catcher is a concern in a tough pennant race. But the Yanks will have to live with that and hope the offense of Andujar and Sanchez outweighs their defensive lapses.
Boston has an average pitching rotation led by a true ace, Chris Sale. But its well-rounded offense easily outweighs the shortage at 4 and 5 in the rotation.
Will Betts and Martinez sustain their torrid hitting through September? Only time will tell. The Yankee offense is deeper but Boston puts the ball in play more often, and works counts every bit as well as the Yankees.
The trade deadline may give NY a boost but if things stay the same, I give Boston a slight edge over 162 games.

Not to make this a Boston vs NY thread but injuries catch up to you eventually, no matter how good your offense is. We are seeing it ourselves with Torres, Sanchez, Tanaka, and to some degree Kahnle. Now the Red Sox have to see if they can withstand the loss of Rodriguez, Pomeranz, Devers, and a regressing Porcello. They have no pool of resources and no roster depth to pull from. My opinion is worth nothing but I can't see how they withstand injuries without some slowing down. Matched against a tougher schedule and possible Betts or JDM regression, I can see a drop off coming sooner than later.

On our side, there really isn't anyone except maybe Torres who has been playing above expectations. We're finally starting to see Stanton consistently swinging the bat well, Bird looks like a new hitter, Didi is starting to heat up again, and Hicks looks is a hidden gem both in our lineup and on defense. Outside of that, Judge stinks on the road, Sanchez had the worst 60 games of his career, and Gardner is inconsistent.

I'm excited for the second half and whoever replaces Gray (or German) in the rotation.

The Red Sox have 64 games left and ten of them are against the Yankees. I think Cashman has to hold all of his chips and salary space until he is sure that there isn't an impact starter available. Mostly because the Yankees need a starter, but also because if the Red Sox make a move for a solid middle of the rotation pitcher like Happ--or if there's something better sitting under the radar-- that would easily put them ahead of the Yankees if everything else remains equal.

The Red Sox also haven't hit lefties as well as righties this year, so if there isn't a reasonable deal for an impact starter it wouldn't hurt to put a lefty in the pen and maybe a left handed fifth starter.

I'm not terribly concerned about any of the of the hitters. I don't think Sanchez's defense is that bad. If you can't live with Andujar's glove at 3B, Walker and Drury are still around.

I read on twitter this weekend (can't find it today) that NYY has only had their full lineup 6 times this year.

The assumed lineup would be

Gardner
Judge
Didi
Stanton
Sanchez
Hicks
Bird
Andujar
Torres

6. Times.

They won't have Torres back this weekend either, but barring any further injuries, they should have that whole set of nine guys available starting Monday.

Admittedly unrelated to the point you are making but had to ask. Is Boone really going to be batting a .905 OPS guy 9th all season?

I just looked at Crow's lineup and unless you flip Didi and Torres, there are not a lot of options. You want a fast runner batting ninth ahead of Gardner so Bird and Sanchez are out. Hicks might be okay at 9 but his ability to switch hit gives Boone a chance to break up the righty hitters.
Didi seems to be hitting again, enough to justify hitting third.
