This one makes very little sense to me. I thought he was ready for A strong year and if Stephenson got hurt again he would be the bellcow.
He was pretty clearly the 4th RB to me this preseason. I don't see what he brings that others don't. He doesn't have any physical advantages on Gibson, and if they really want another "big back" if Stephenson gets hurt, waivers is loaded with RBs of Harris' level

Can't find it/them right away, but I know some pundits were thinking they might keep four on the roster given the plan to run the ball a bunch. Wonder if this means they keep an extra WR to start the season and see who can deliver the goods *coughThorntoncough*

yeah, I saw a few who thought they'd keep 4. I just didn't see it given how easy it is to find a RB and plug him in with injuries, and given the OL situation with Sow maybe in week 1 doubt, some WR depth they might want to keep and various other spots where talent is harder to find and the roles are less clear.

Edit- also think Harris is a pretty good bet to make the PS, not sure another team is using a 53 spot on him

Maybe it was this highly esteemed pundit:

I think if the Pats end up running the ball as much as they hope, we will need more than 3 RBs. My guess is that Hasty makes it or they sign someone new after Tuesday. But I bet they will have 4 active RBs pretty often.

Agreed, but I don't really have a sense that they thought he would be a good fit in the Van pelt offense so they should have brought someone in and just gotten rid of him earlier. And you could see this one coming for a long time. They just used him as camp fodder.
I mean like 30+ guys in camp are also camp fodder. Why does he deserve to be treated different?

Chad Ryland cut. 98.5 just announced it.
Thanks for getting us Maye!

Sigh. A massive failure of evaluation — going to try to dig up @IdiotKicker ‘s comments from the winter that basically nailed how his technical form made it unlikely he would ever be a useful Kikcer — that is even more infuriating when you play the always dangerous “Who was available?” game (Puka Nacua, Dontayvion Wicks, etc.) even though we know the rate of 4th round success is relatively low.

I'm still shocked we kept him last year. I know Folk is limited when it comes to distance but I never got the sense Ryland could be accurate. He hit a shank in the season ticket holder/Foxboro resident practice that would embarrass an average high school kicker.

Yup. In hindsight they should have cut him like Rohrwasser and tried to put him on the practice squad. Although, again, a competent Kicker on the 2023 roster may very well mean no Drake Maye, so it all worked out.

I still don’t quite understand the rationale for taking a kicker in the 5th round in 2020 and in the 4th round in 2023. As I recall Folk was selling insurance or something when Belichick found him, and Joey Slye was available late in the offseason as a free agent.

Interested to hear more from @IdiotKicker and others about how draft evaluation of specialists like this can be so flawed — despite the fact that they seem to be able to correctly identify veterans.

Once again, I am always right lol.

Honestly I thought it was a toss up between him and Slye.
I’ve been expecting this ever since this tweet a few days ago. One practice woudn’t decide it but it totally fit my previous impression, which is Ryland shouldn’t be on an NFL roster.

Chad Ryland went first during the field goal period at the end of today’s practice. Results…

Ryland 33 good

Slye 33 good

Ryland 41 wide left

Slye 41 good

Ryland 47 doink right

Slye 47 good

Ryland 50 wide right

Slye good 50

Ryland started off OK. He was perfect on extra points and 10/14 on FG"s through week 9 last year. The misses were from 57, 52, 48, 48, two of which came in a game where it was raining and they were having snapping issues (the Jets game). It seemed to be going reasonably well for a rookie kicker midway through the year, albeit with not a ton of kicks or even high leverage kicks. Then the wheels really fell off, he finished the year 6/11 and the majority of the beat writers there everyday thought Slye out performed him in camp.

Looking at his stats, I was kind of surprised he only missed one XP last year. Gun to my head I would've thought 3-5.

Happy for Boutte and glad to see the door hasn't already shut on Barmore making it back this year. Going to be very interesting to see how WR snaps shake out over the first month of the season. All the more reason I prefer to see Maye in there, but a topic for a different thread.

Two bits of trivia that came out of that article that surprised me:
  • Joe Cardona is tied (with David Andrews) for longest-tenured Patriot;
  • Only 4 players on this roster won a Super Bowl with the Pats. (the two above, plus Jon Jones and Deatrich Wise)

I thought Kevin Harris would make the team. But reading cut news from across the league it seems like there are a lot of surprise RB cuts. It’s gotten to the point where you always find a decent FA if you need one.

He was in Cleveland last year, so AVP should know all about him.
Yeah volin knows he exists because he mentioned him in an article looking at every player under AVP who was a FA. Of course he said he played well by quoting a single game with a 72 PFF score, ignoring that PFF for the year had him as atrocious

To be fair, an atrocious OT would be an upgrade for the Pats, though.

Matt Hennessey is a guy I could see them wanting for the PS. He was a GOOD center for ATL, then had 2 back to back knee injuries.

I know we make these jokes but.. no, one wouldn't. I get that having bad starters is not fun, but it's getting tiring to have every thread be "well this guy who was on the practice squad must be better than this guy" There is a reason Lowe had a bunch of mid-level offers when he was available and was considered a guy who was going to compete for a starting spot or be a good swing, where guys like Christon get the minimum with basically no guarantees, which says "probably camp fodder".

I saw an article about Cole Strange potentially coming back as a Center once he (hopefully) recovers from his injuries. As I don't know much about OL:

1) How valuable is a Center compared to a Guard?

2) Other than, obviously, snapping the ball - how does a Center typically differ from a Guard in terms of skillset and athleticism/size?

Maybe he can back up at center, but Jake Andrews looked like the guy who was slated for that role.
