For the better, don't you think?
Yes. If I remember correctly you hated this pick and did not want to give him a chance for an explanation or to remove the tats. You wanted him gone yesterday and would not hear of anything else. Has your opinion changed?

No, it hasn't. His explanation was bullshit. He got it to honor all his family that has been in the military...but no one told him for 3+ years what it really means? If that's the truth, his family, military or not, sucks. ( I may be misremembering his apology/explanation, though. It's not worth my time to go back to rehash it)

I'm glad he has "learned" from this experience, but I still doubt that he didn't know it's true meaning until the day he got drafted.

And yes, I still wish the Patriots never drafted anyone with a tattoo like this. That will never change. I don't think that's an irrational wish.

A lot of people, especially younger ones, get tattoos without investigating all possible meanings. It's really easy for me to believe that a college athlete, surrounded by other college athletes that likely do not care too much about politics, was unaware his tattoo was associated with a right-wing extremist group until the internet decided to point it out and immediately vilify him as a racist.

Yikes. I mean, his interviews seemed pretty sincere. If we can't give him the benefit of doubt here, then we can never give it to anyone. Just screw everyone who's ever done something we don't like. They're all lying and irredeemable.

Fuck misrepresenting what I said. This is like me saying that you are for signing him, so why not go out and sign OJ, Stingley and Big Ben while we are at it!

Why are you so offended that I don't like the drafting of him for the tattoo? Go back and read what I have said on the matter. This is my choice. I don't care if you did cartwheels when they drafted him. I am not judging you or your character for looking past the tattoo. I just wish they hadn't made such an unforced error and it's one more reason I don't think they will ever get any more money out of me.

A couple of my favorite bad tattoo stories:
* A friend had a tattoo with a cross with "Be here now" on it. "Nick, I didn't realize you were that religious." "I'm not; it's just an Oasis album I really liked."
* A girl had a tattoo of a feather on her wrist. "What does that mean?" "I like it because it symbolizes impermanence." "Oh interesting - a tattoo to symbolize impermanence" :: LONG PAUSE :: "Huh, I never thought of it like that."

So, yeah, I find it totally plausible that a young adult got a bad tattoo for stupid reasons without a lot of thought. Maybe he is a white supremacist; I have no idea. But I think it's reasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt, particularly since he has said and done the right things since being called out on it. But I don't think @PC Drunken Friar 's stance, wishing they drafted someone else, to be unreasonable either.

You're right. I did take it too far with my add on commentary. But the bolded isn't all that you said. You said that his "his explanation was bullshit", and that is what I was responding to.

SSF, respectfully, I feel that my reply was more football-related.

Edit: I'll move it to the other thread though

Do we expect BB to bring in a vet kicker for camp competition or just hand this job to the new kid? The latter doesn’t seem very much like BB, but maybe they would want JR to get all the reps?
If there's one thing we know about BB it is that he places extreme importance on the value of competition.

When BB drafted Ghost, he had Martin Gramatica in camp as well to push him.

It’s going to be hard for the Pats to find someone worth a damn to accept an invite to come to camp and compete for the PK job. I’d give Rohrwasser all the training camp reps; you can always bring in a couple veterans for tryouts right before Week 1 if you decide Rohrwasser isn’t ready. (Assuming you can do that with all the COVID protocols.)

well, pretty much everyone that ran through NE last year is still a FA, including Ghost and adding Vinatieri and Succop. I'm not sure it would be hard to find someone who has kicked in an actual game before if you want to motivate the kid.

If you think a second kicker is needed in camp for motivation, then sure, you can find a warm body. I’m suggesting that whoever agrees to be that warm body isn’t likely to be the best available free-agent kicker when the season begins. So if you think Rohrwasser is adequately motivated, I think you skip the second kicker in camp and scramble to find someone at last minute if you decide he isn’t the guy.

Not among the top 1%.

From the sound of it, the top ranked -- undrafted -- kicker, Blankenship, made Indianapolis.

Let’s not forget that the Pats once cut Robby Gould too. This doesn’t mean much for his future prospects. I don’t view it as a waste at all.

He will almost certainly make the ps and likely wind up N.E.'s kicker of the future, possibly as soon as this season. That said, it does reek of that too-cute-by-half shit that gets more and more annoying as fewer and fewer of the "Patriots outside the box" picks land. Here's hoping he'll be on the team, sooner rather than later, and the fact he was actually initially cut by the team will be a blip-y piece of trivia a decade from now.

P.S. The "top 3%" poster above - I see you.

I’m sorry, what’s too cute by half? Drafting a kicker or the one they took?
They drafted Gost in the 4th, Mesko in the 5th and Bailey in the 5th. BB saw something he liked so he took him.

No problem drafting a kicker in the 5th or even earlier than that, but drafting a kicker considered not one of the top echelon guys, first one off the board, a guy most places had as a possible UDFA, it’s just a bit “Tavon Wilson/Jordan Richards in the 2nd“ for my taste. I hope I’m wrong. I’d love to see this reverse-jinx feature me as the unappreciative dope whose post looks super dumb when JR develops into our kicker for the next ten years. Fingers crossed.

I'd wager to say the vast, vast majority of kickers are labeled as UDFA. As to how much time and effort the "experts" put into scouting the position, I'd have no idea how to wager on. As to many here lamenting losing out on Blankenship, it's because he was basically the only guy with a draft grade - and he went undrafted. Shit, Justin Tucker went undrafted as obviously so did Vinatieri. If other positions are separated by hairs heading into the draft, kickers are by a flea's foreskin.

I get your point but people are making way too big a deal about this. People are also not realizing that guys like Tavon Wilson turned into perfectly serviceable NFL players (8 years) as did Richards (4 years), it just didn't happen in NE. The hit rate on even 2nd rounders isn't all that great beyond that.

Does he miss? Sure. Does he dig out UDFAs and take guys like Vollmer or Mankins way higher than expected and pay for those sins? I think so, you may disagree. Bottom line he is nothing if not consistent - if you like a guy you take him; you don't worry about what the other people say and you don't think "he'll still be there next time we pick".

Not to be a broken record but: Belichick is a slightly above average drafter. Drafting is a crap shoot. The best drafter in history, Ozzie Newsome, used a slightly modified Belichick system.

If you haven’t read @Super Nomario article on ITP about the fifth round you should. Here is a link: http://insidethepylon.com/nfl/teams-nfl/afc-east/new-england-patriots/2016/08/29/why-does-bill-belichick-hate-the-fifth-round/

Sometimes you get a Bailey or a Cardona. Sometimes you get... a JR. @Papelbon's Poutine is right, you’re making a lot more out of this than is warranted. It’s the fifth round and he went for who he thought would be the best specialist. He took players later on but he sees the talent in the 5th, 6th, and 7th as almost an extension of UDFAs. They are not the same as the guys he takes in rounds 1-4. Makes sense when you look at talent curves in the draft anyway.

Tyler Bass, who was #1 in some quarters and on Mugsy’s Jock’s draft list, will be kicking for the Bills.
He missed his first two attempts, from 38 and 34. Not a great start. Of course a famous Pats kicker once got off to a pretty horrible start in Buffalo too.
