For those of you who weren't paying attention when we debated these issues ad nauseum a few months ago, we're doing a five round supplemental draft, with positions completely open and with the draft order the reverse of the last draft order.  The rules will be the same regarding time windows (6 hrs on weekdays, 12 hrs on weekends, clock stops from midnight to 8 AM EST). I propose that sleeplyjose should kick us off on Monday, August 19th.  That way almost all the NFL teams will have played two preseason games  and people will have more information regarding potential picks.  It'll be tight to get all the picks in before the season but if the last few picks of the last round are still being made as the season starts it doesn't really matter that much.

I'm putting this out there now just to get it back on peoples' radars.  For those of you with some spare time to kill obsessing about football while waiting for the season to start (ie, most of you), it would probably help to do a little research before the 19th, as this will greatly speed up the draft.

We've got five picks, right? So I can fill all the holes on my OL?

I thought I could use the supplemental draft to fill a bunch of holes I knew I had-I wasnt expecting to have to grab a bunch of new TE/WR types.

So, here's my question-Joe Morgan, who was my No. 3 WR, just tore his ACL.  I dont have to "replace" him, do I?  I've got holes in slightly more important positions, such as QB and offensive tackle and such, that I would like to use picks on.  I can just leave him on the roster, right?

Absolutely. You'd have to argue that you can run 2 wide sets, 2TE-1WR sets, 3TE sets, or some other overload formation. It's a risk, but you don't have to fill the position.

Should we be able to drop guys and make additional picks beyond the five? In real life, Was would be able to release Aaron Hernandez and grab somebody else.

That's why I asked about that upthread.  There's a couple guys I'd like to drop.  I think a good idea would be to get 3 extra roster spots, but you get to pick up to 5 players so you can have some flexibility in your roster.

I think we need to have a deadline of players you want to release by August 18th.

If you want to release someone that is fine but you need to release them by August 18th and they are eligible for drafting. There should not be a limit on how many guys you can release.

Wait - I'm confused.  So now it's only a 3 round draft - unless I drop 2 players?

I think we should expand 5 more roster spots, allow people to drop as many players as they want, and then just keep drafting, snake style, unless everyone has filled their rosters.  So for example - if I hold onto my entire existing team, then I will draft 5 times and be done.  If Laddie wants to drop Alexander he has to do so by the 18th, and then he can draft 6 times.  But I'm free to use one of my 5 empty roster spots on Alexander.  And if RedOctober wants to drop 4 players he can draft 9 new ones.

Oy, you guys like to make things complicated. I'm open to all arguments for or against dropping guys. Like sleepyjose, though, I think that we should definitely add five roster spots. Expanding the size of the roster is one of the big reasons for the supplemental draft. I'd also like to limit the number of drops per team to a couple, just in order to limit the length of the draft. The point of this is not to have a super lengthy draft and we're going to be hard pressed to get it done before the season starts even with five rounds. If we have 9-10 rounds (five roster spots plus many teams dropping 4-5 guys whose spots need filling) then we're going to be drafting into late September and that raises all sorts of other issues.

Yeah I agree with MMS here. I don't see a ton of reason to drop a bunch of guys. You have the Aaron Hernadez's of the world, and the Rolando McClain's but guys like Danario, Bulaga or other injuries are probably better off stashed anyways. This isn't a one year fantasy draft, this is a multi year dynasty. Injuries and other things happen. I think each team should be allowed 1 drop, but if you all push hard enough, 2 would be my max.

Classic Sosh making everything as complicated as possible.

Can we make the timer shorter?  12 hours is way too long for a supplemental draft.

No shit.

Everyone shut the fuck up. We agreed on 5 added spots.

I don't think we need to drop anyone. This isn't fantasy football. It's a lost season. We agreed to drop players at the end of the year, why not just keep it the way we agreed to it?

If I recall correctly, people were pretty adamant that we "stick to the rulez!!1!" throughout this process. We agreed to add 5 people. We agreed to cuts at the beginning of the next draft. Got injured players? Tough shit. There will be plenty more by the end of the year.

Given that opinions seem roughly divided and that there is substantial value in keeping things simple (and not changing the rules constantly), I think the best course of action is not to drop any players before the supplemental draft. If one or two of your guys has gotten injured (or in jail), then you can just fill that hole with one of your five supplemental picks.

Clock starts on sleepyjose in one week.

Its six hours during weekdays, 12 on weekends, just like the other draft.

For those of you guys who have the password to update the site: Sumner added five additional draft slots but since positions are completely open we need to assign all guys the position "SUPP" when we enter the picks.  At some point down the road we'll figure out how to get the real positions assigned.  We're also throwing a little wrench into the system by reversing the draft order.  As you remember, its set up to automatically assign picks to the next team in the original order.  So what we're going to do is put in a bunch of placeholder picks and then count upward from Sleepyjose.  So when you look at the list of picks on the site, you'll find this at the end:

SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, TBD
SUPP, Sleepyjose

That's the first round.  What we'll do is replace SUPP, Sleepyjose with his pick and then replace the line right above that with Saturnian's pick, the line right above that with Dollar's pick, etc.  When we're done with the first round, we'll set up the second.

Let's kick this shit off.....

I was surprised how tough picking here was.  For weeks I had assumed I would kickoff the backup QB run.  But then I watched highlights of EJ Manuel's preseason games.  And while I don't expect him to morph into Cam Newton overnight, there was enough there to feel confident that I had not royally fucked up drafting him to my team months ago.  In fact, he looked good enough that I'm sure he would have been scooped up early in this supplemental draft.    And so I thought to myself - maybe I should use this 1st overall selection on a different position.  There must be some nobody who's turning heads so far in training camps and preseason games who wasn't scooped up.  So I started checking the news, and you know what?  We did a pretty damn good job of drafting.  Great for SoSH, bad for me.

Anyways, I was having a really tough time deciding on this pick.  Then they announced that Manuel needed "minor" knee surgery and would miss the rest of the preseason.

So I'm wasting my pick on drafting Carson Palmer, QB

(We've all seen the hotdog pic by now, so I'm changing it up a bit)

Sorry, should have mentioned I PM'd Saturanian.

And I almost drafted Palmer originally, but decided to go with the rookie w/ upside over the mediocre veteran.  Palmer's immobile style doesn't exactly mesh well with what I'm trying to do with my offense, but I wanted a steady veteran to backup Manuel (or hold the line until he was ready to take over) and Palmer is clearly capable enough to fill that job.  My offensive line needs help, but I think it's at worst as bad as his line last year in Oakland.  And probably not much better/worse than his AZ line this year.  Last year's "King of Garbage Time Stats" Palmer isn't going to push this team into a serious contender, but he gives us a solid if unspectacular player we should be able to depend on until the young core of this team really comes into it's own.   And if Manuel doesn't pan out, I have enough faith that Palmer could turn into the proverbial "game manager" good enough to win playoff games on a talented team.

The Saints select ILB Kavell Conner

Conner adds depth to one of the positions of need on our team.  He transitioned from an OLB, and is performing well again in training camp/preseason.  Like Jose, I initially was imagining taking a backup QB, but a) he picked the one I really wanted, and 2) i think LB was a greater need,

Busy summer, but I'm here.  Going to be on a cross country flight tomorrow, so I might have to PM my pick.  Are we still sending to proxy?

Dollar has 2.5 hours left.

We have 158 more picks to make and there are only 17 days until the first game of the season and 20 days until the first Sunday, including a bunch of weekends when few picks will get made.  If we take 4-6 hours for every pick on weekdays we are still going to be doing this draft several weeks into the season.  Get your shit together and PM your picks to Proxy if you're not going to be around.

I like the idea of shortening someones time if they miss their pick.

For example, if Dollar doesn't pick, he only has a 4 hour window for the rest of the draft. If he misses that, he has a two hour window.

No reason to make everyone else suffer.

Hey MMS, can you put the draft order at the top of the thread? I know it's listed elsewhere, but it's way easier (for me at least) to have it listed here so I don't have to check multiple places to figure out whenabouts I'm going to pick.

With my starting left tackle Jared Veldheer possibly out for the season, the Buckin' Broncos need a replacement.  Luckily, there's a second year guy available who has shown some promise and has all the physical tools to be a contributor.  The Broncos select.... Donald Stephenson, LT

Third round pick in 2012, started seven games late in the season.  Needs to improve his pass blocking (maybe Jared Veldheer can teach him a thing or two), but his run blocking is already impressive and he should be able to slot in as my LT with Veldheer hurt. He just needs to avoid the clipping fines.
