Okay, the Elcab Dolphins are going to run it back and take K Connor Barth again.

He blew out his Achilles playing basketball in a charity game right before the season last year, shortly after our supplemental draft and I didn't have a chance to replace him.  In a cost cutting move, we released Barth at the end of the season, but we're happy to bring him back on a team-friendly deal where he'll get another chance to prove himself healthy and effective.  Reports have him booming 50-60 yarders in minicamp already, so we're confident he can come back and be the guy we hoped for last season.  Kicking options are running thin and if I waited another round, I was going to have to get Morton Anderson out of retirement.

Sorry for the wait guys. Finally got back.

The Patriots select Latavius Murray, RB Oakland Raiders

The 6'3" 230 lb back out of UCF has great power and explosiveness and he had some of the best numbers in the 2013 draft including a 4.38 40. He fell to the Raiders in the 6th round last year due to durability concerns and subsequently ended up on IR with an ankle/foot injury. He's currently slated as the #3 RB on the depth chart behind McFadden and MJD, but could see playing time as a change of pace back or if one of those guys goes down, which isn't far-fetched. Recently Offensive Coordinator Greg Olson said he sees Murray as having the biggest upside if he stays healthy. As far as the RFP Pats go I'd like this kid to be the backup to Lacy with James being put in the Sproles/Woodhead role. This is definitely a boom or bust pick but if this kid is healthy he's going to produce. He's not just a size and speed prospect he has the talent and technique to go with it.

The Bears select OL Wesley Johnson.

The Steelers thought enough of him to throw him in as competition for any number of spots on their line (likely G or T).  At this stage in the draft, that's good enough for me.  Hard to tell where he'll stick, but I like the fact he has some size and has played at G, C, and T in his college career.

I need to start accumulating some OL depth, and this seems like a nice start.

EDIT - mascho PM'ed.

The Sentinels select A.J. Klein, OLB, Carolina Panthers

A fifth round selection last year out of Iowa State, Klein saw action all season on special teams and had two starts at WLB when Chase Blackburn went down with an injury.  The Panthers are impressed with this kid, and expect him to push Blackburn for the starting gig this season.  In addition, they are working him at all 3 LB spots in their 4-3 front.  So he also brings depth and versatility to our roster. We'll slot him in behind Ogletree but expect him to see time at each of the three LB slots as well as on special teams.

Devil you know over the devil you don't.  He won't be on my punt team.  Patrick Chung, S.

He's a safety that can do some things.  He's not the best but he's not the worst.  He's going to be in a secondary with McCourty, Browner, and Revis so maybe he'll learn something...like how to not suck at covering people.

Both KFP and I have some shit to do today. I need to be out of the office early to prepare for a date. Gentlemen, this could be a big night for me.

Rashad Johnson, FS, Arizona.

Johnson plays FS when the Cardinals are in their nickle package. He also is the FS when honey badger needs a rest. He got 643 snaps last year and, PFF methodology issues aside, graded out fairly well. He's considered + as depth and could easily be a full time average starter. His signature stats are all to the top of the middle of the pack as well. So a guy with a decent floor who is better than average in coverage and is only 28. He should have 2-3 years left as a decent backup. Heck, if Gipson struggles he can start as FS. He can also play special teams.

He's also one tough SOB: look what he played with/through:

Adding some depth to the receiving core. Amendola is due to miss a few games to some sort of injury, Stedman Bailey is starting the season suspended, and Andre Holmes (though I'm real high on him) is a complete wild card.

The San Francisco 49ers select: Jarius Wright, WR

Right now he's behind Patterson and Jennings on the depth chart but he's battling with Jerome Simpson for the WR3 role and snaps. A 2012 4th round pick, out of the slot he's extremely quick (4.42 40 & 4.03 20 yd shuttle) gets good separation while also being a fantastic deep threat. He was top 10 (with at least 25% of targets) in catch rate on deep balls. He's got great hands, only registered one drop last season, and we're hoping he has a breakout season this year with Eli slingling him balls.

Why not.

Michael Sam, DE

He's someone I was considering for my last round pick. But I gotta think someone else was going to roll the dice in round 7 too....He may be a bust, in which case this was a wasted pick (but as the #7 DL on my roster not a massive loss) or he may find a way to use the doubt that surrounds him to as fuel towards a decent career in which case this may be a bargain.

The Denver Broncos select...

Aaron Murray, QB

I need a backup for Philip Rivers, and I don't think there's a better option on the board than Murray, who may have a bright future ahead of him in Kansas City.

We are ready to grab a backup to Russell Wilson.

Steelers serendipitously select:

QB. Thad Lewis

We believe Lewis maybe the best quarterback on the RW Bills. When EJ Manuel struggled with injuries, Lewis came in filled in more than adequately, actually earning a better PFF rating & NFL QB rating than Manuel. Don't believe me? I like what this guy had to say last year:

Sure he's a UDFA short on specs, this is as good of a backup QB choice as you can hope for this late in the game. If Wilson ever goes down, we think Lewis can keep the game close enough & give the Steelers a chance to win.

Are we to assume that we're required to field a legal team (as defined by the set of players we had to draft in the initial draft last year)? For instance, I don't have a kicker - can I pass on a kicker and grab a player somewhere else if I feel like it, or is that not allowed? It feels like I should have to draft a kicker.

Thad Lewis was the other guy I was deciding between when I took Aaron Murray.  I like him, I just don't know how much we'll actually get to see him play.  I felt the same way about Troy Smith a few years back... every time I watched him play, he looked to me to be a perfectly serviceable NFL quarterback, but he never got a great opportunity to prove himself.

With the possible 2-3 round supplemental draft coming up I'd say that rosters need to be legal after that.

With a roster this stacked it's hard to find someone who could even have a chance to contribute. So I'm going to dig deep here and pick someone with unlimited upside.

Charles Johnson, WR. After putting up about a million touchdowns and a billion yards for Grand Valley State, and putting up a ridiculous Julio Jones-like combine, he was drafted by the Packers in 2013. He blew an ACL, was released, and claimed by the Browns. It's my understanding that they're very high on him and he was one of the reasons they didn't panic draft WRs when Gordon got suspended.

I'm going to sext Wibi now.

The Jets need to round out their defensive end spots and feel we have found a steal this late in the process.  We select DE Derrick Shelby.  He's appeared in all 32 games of his 2-year career with Miami so he's able to be counted on to stay healthy.  He's a rotational player with good size (6'2" 280 lbs) who has good run-stopping ability.  He'll see time on 1st and 2nd downs in running situations.

I think the majority would be for it.

Great pick. I was down to Murray and Johnson with my last selection.

I'm up for it and I think it makes sense. Last year, I lost my starting K and an OLB after our draft and prior to the season starting. There will be injuries, suspensions, cuts, retirements, etc that we'll likely have to deal with so 2 or 3 rounds to help fill in the holes should help fix any of those issues.

(I wish I had known about being able to wait on a kicker until then though)
