I wasn't sure where else to post this and I don't consider it a rule change but a way to make sure we cover our asses for worst case scenario. We had discussed this before but we never really decided on anything.

Do we want to make a certain number of rounds only available for stealing, such as the first 6, or 8, etc?

My worry is if some people are done drafting and then for instance their Kicker is stolen in the last round. Are they just SOL?

I think we need to have a stealing round or two first. If you don't steal you can have an additional pick at the end of the draft. But I firmly think we need to do this. It's not a new rule it's just defining the process.

That kind of makes it like a free agency period, which I'd be ok with.

But if we want to keep it all as one draft, I think having the stealing rounds first, with only designated stealing rounds, removes some of the strategy involved. Owners should have to decide: Do I want to steal Phragle's 13th best player or is Clowney more valuable?

If we sprinkle them in the first couple of rounds (or top half) each person still has plenty of time to cover their asses while also keeping people on their toes.

I agree with DoDM that there is more strategy (and it is truer to the original rules) if you are choosing between stealing or taking a college player.

Why don't we just say that there is no stealing in the last two rounds of the draft?  That way everybody has two rounds to fill in any roster holes that have developed.

So here's the thing man. I'd Draft differently though in the 3rd round though, you know? In the NFL you know who is on your team before the draft. Sure there are maybe 1 or 2 older vet free agents but that's the exception not the norm.. I like the idea of limiting stealing to the first 2 or maybe 3 rounds. That way if we lose someone good we have a good player we can target before he is taken by someone else.

I'd prefer the piece of mind I'd get from the stealing round. I don't want to be blindsided by a need. I want to know my needs beforehand.

I'm open to changing this as its pretty minor.  If we wanted to separate them, I think the simplest thing would be to just have the first two rounds be stealing rounds then the rest of the draft proceed (basically, what Scoops suggests).

One potential downside is that whoever drafts last in the second stealing round is going to have very little choice.  But maybe that's ok.

Thoughts from other people?

What if we gave teams a choice to steal a player or take a team's later round pick if they don't like the players available? Maybe like the 8th or 9th round? Something not too valuable, but not too shitty either.

So for example (using the original order) let's say everything goes smoothly the first round, then on the snake back through the Texans don't like the players available. There are going to be seven teams with players to choose from. The Texans can choose one of those team's 8th rounder instead of one of their players.

Keeps everyone rosters the same size and it doesn't screw the back end.

I like this.  Those picks shouldn't be that valuable but it at least gives people options if they really don't like the players available at that point.

It's too bad there isn't some sort of software to track what players are available and what players aren't.  Like Yahoo fantasy football, but with everyone in it.

This is my biggest issue right now, just thinking about how we're going to do all of this logistically.  Sumner's software isn't really ideal for what we want to do going forward with this league.

Something like what you mention seems ideal, but I don't think it exists.

After that, the question is whether to use Sumner's software setup or move to some kind of googledoc shared spreadsheet with all the rosters or something like that.

I'm amused at the extra work people are willing to go through to try to make this ridiculous stealing nonsense work. Why not just approve trading? Add to the cluster.

Edit: I'm not trying to rehash the argument, so there's no need to respond. I've come to the understanding this process is what it is. Just making an observation.

Anyone else here have experience with this year's Madden?

I tried to just go through manage roster. No idea how to just edit rosters without getting multiple errors:
A. Teams go over the salary cap (no setting to turn off salary cap)
B. Roster sizes not allowed to fall under the minimum. This makes adding and dropping players very difficult.

Also tried starting a new franchise but then I wouldn't be able to sim our games since the schedule/playoffs would be controlled by the franchise. (this would be an option if we did all 32).

Any other ideas on how to just edit a few rosters?

I asked Shane to read this. He said:

"Salary cap can be turned off before you start the league. I’m just simming the rest of the roster to fill it at the end."
"But I turned injuries off so the sims and actual players will be the starters"
"The issue is building 2-4 rosters. If you turn off salary cap though, should be able to do it with trades if offline dynasty"

I think limiting the stealing round to 2 rounds at the beginning has two advantages:
1) easier to manage - no trying to figure out in round 7 if a certain team has already had two players stolen from them.
2) more realistic - since the bulk of free agency happens before the draft. Teams go into the draft knowing their strengths / weaknesses.

The pool will still have a mix of rookies and vets, since there are cut players or players who went undrafted last year that teams will want to grab.

BTW, I'm putting together a Google Doc of the players kept and available for stealing for my own purposes. I can turn it into to something share-able once everyone's made their picks.

The playoffs are not yet concluded but we should probably start preparing for the offseason draft if we want to get at least some of it done before the real NFL draft.

As we decided last summer, the framework is this:

-Each team decides upon four players to drop from their roster completely (these guys go into the draft pool).

-Each team also decides upon 12 players to protect from the draft.

Myt Cowboys drop:
1.  Mark Sanchez
2.  Landry Jones
3.  Oday Aboushi
4.  Reggie Hodges

Myt Cowboys protect:
