Sorry about the hold up again. Crazy week.

With their second to last pick the Patriots will select Kwame Geathers DT

He's HUGE. 6'6" 345 lbs. Great bloodlines, half of his family have played or are currently playing in the NFL. Not sure why he decided to declare as a Junior, especially with Jenkins leaving opening up the starting job to him. He has a really high ceiling but it comes with question marks about his conditioning. As a back up those don't concern me. I wanted to finish off my D with a mammoth human being. I think I got one.

Rob Rang

Strengths: Simply massive with surprisingly even overall weight distribution. Tall with the arm length to go along with his height. Good quickness off the snap, showing enough burst to surprise the center and ruin plays before they begin. Strong enough to plant his feet and simply lean to the side to occupy two gaps. Good strength for the drag-down tackle. Significantly improved lateral and downfield hustle in 2012. Surprisingly light on his feet and possesses impressive straight-line speed for a man of his size. Rare bloodlines.

I'll take a flier on him.

How many UDFAs is that for you now? 3?

Just need a kicker and punter. So I'm taking one. The Cleveland Ravens select:

P Michael Koenen, Tampa Bay

Koenen is pretty much an average punter (I rated him 19th out of 34 Ps this year). But he's an amazing kickoff specialist. He led the league with 58 touchbacks this year (a whopping 68% of his kickoffs), finishing 2nd in PFF's kickoff rating. In the five years PFF has graded kickoffs, he's been in the top four every year but one. Since we expect to score a lot this year, he'll be putting this skill to use a lot.

EDIT: SSF PM'd

He's 12 of 13 from 40-49 last 2 seasons, and we play in a dome. Can that 3/8 from 50+ improve? I think it can.

A couple of those were blocked and 2 were end of the half 60 yarders that weren't even close.  But Pete frequently passed up a lot of 52-54 yarders and punted instead.

Yeah... 9 rookies too... I really wanted to stay young in building my team, but I may have got carried away in terms of potential production over average production. Geathers and Rogers both have pretty good chances to start in their situations, but we'll see. I really tried to build a team of players with complimentary skill sets. I doubt that I'll hit on all 9 picks but I like my chances either way. I think my first round picks are solid in Austin, Werner and Jones. I really like Armstead and I think he'll do well in NO. Lacy has a great opportunity in GB as does McDonald in St. Louis, but those two probably have the most question marks for me right now. After seeing how far Lacy dropped and who went ahead of him, I may not have picked him. As far as McDonald goes I keep thinking, Taylor Mays...

Well, guess I didn't need to pass since I wasn't holding anything up.

Oh well, Texans select the Ginger Wolverine, Tim Masthay, P.

Masthay pinned the opponent inside the 20 >40% of the time this year.  He also had more fair catches (26) than returns (24).  Seems like a good combo to me.

London Fletcher, ILB

Probably retiring after next season but the front seven could use a veteran captain and who knows maybe he won't be a total stiff?

Also my team needs at least one guy with a good porn star name.

If you want to win Super Bowls year in and year out, you need a stone-cold assassin at the kicker position.

And if you're Al Davis, stop reading now.

(he also did some good stuff for Colts)

The Bear Claws select Adam "Mr. Clutch" Vinatieri!

So many questions:
Did you also consider Jan Stenerud and Morten Anderson?
Does picking AV qualify you guys for AARP membership?
Is there, in fact, a creaky, squeaky, rusty hinge sound when AV kicks?
So, you're OK with never reaching the endzone on kickoffs?
Or making a FG over 40 yards?

  1. No, I only considered kickers with more Lombardis than Tom Brady
  2. He's not much older than Brady either
  3. Bosher is our kickoff specialist, and is fully capable of long FG attempts
  4. Kiss the rings

Time for the flyer of all flyers.

The Redskins select Lawrence Okoye, DL, 49ers.  Please place in our final Front Seven slot

Chances are you have never heard of this guy, unless you watched a metric ton of the London 2012 Olympics.  Qualified for the finals in the discus, where he finished dead last.  But he showed up to first a UK NFL Combine, and then a Super Regional NFL Combine in Dallas, where he put on a show.  Said former Cowboys personnel executive Gil Brandt of Okoye’s workout at the NFL Super Regional Combine: “He looked like Secretariat next to a bunch of plow horses.”

Here are the numbers on this guy:  6' 6", 304 LBs.  Ran a 4.74 40 yard dash.  His 35 inch vertical was better than the vertical put up by 21 of the 34 wide receivers at the draft, including Tavon Austin.  Jim Harbaugh described him as an "Adonis."  This article here puts his numbers up against the rest of the rookie class and some other noted NFL players:  http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2013/05/09/vertical-jump-lawrence-okoye-tavon-austin/

The 49ers signed him to a contract and yesterday was the first day he ever put on pads at Niners rookie camp.  But he wowed on special teams and in kickoff coverage.  This guy's ceiling for next season is probably the practice squad.  But I'm in this for the long haul and taking a chance that "this guy" will grow into a pro.

RB Isaiah Pead.
I am NOT happy with you right now, MMS! Pead would've been a great change of pace back with Richardson, although I think he's capable of a role bigger than that. I really like this pick.

Thanks man. I'm not sure what happened to this guy last year but he's really explosive and I think the pick has a lot of upside for this point in the draft.

Colts select P CHRIS KLUWE.

I wish he were still on an NFL roster. I think he's probably right that his outspoken ways are going to affect his future employment.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Kluwe and wanted to draft him for the sole purpose of the write-up*, but I'm wondering about his NFL future.

*I was planning to reach out to him on Twitter and see if he'd do a write up himself. Given his love of the internet and gaming, I thought it was 50/50 he'd respond and do it.

WIth our next pick, the Jnai Dolphins select RB Chris Ivory

He's had problems with fumbles (although none in the past 2 seasons) and staying healthy, but when he's on the field it's really fun to watch him run with the ball.  His downhill running style will fit in well with our offense should Trent Richardson need a breather. While I was initially looking for someone to compliment Richardson, I've still got some flexibility with my last roster spot to add that kind of guy next round. Ivory could never seem to crack the Saints RB rotation, but his numbers were strong in limited work and I feel his skills will be better suited to the power running game we're going to employ over the spread offense NO ran.  He doesn't have much experiencing in the passing game, as Sproles took the majority of those snaps from him, but he's graded out well in the limited pass protection and receiving numbers that are available. While he has his flaws, I'm pretty happy getting a guy with 1000 yard potential this late.

With our next to last pick of the draft, the Seattle Seahawks select "one of their own", Jon Ryan, P.  He isn't so great at gross punt average, but he routinely is amongst the leaders in fair catch percentage and inside 20 percentage.

I won't hold the fact that he seems like a Carrot Top fan against him.

The Chargers select:

Quanterus Smith, DE

He's my extra player in the front seven and a pure pass rusher.  High risk and high upside, which are the kind of guys I don't mind betting on at this point.
