Thinking of getting a headset for gaming for my sons 8th birthday. Any thoughts on what to get. I'm considering HyperX Cloud stinger. Based on cost $50 and google says its pretty popular. Can anyone convince me otherwise?? Do i need anything else- amazon suggesting mouse and pad but i'm assuming thats because it's PC compatable.

I'm a little out of touch with things. My soon to be 8 year old also wants fortnite on ps4 so he doesnt have to keep borrowing moms iphone, his kindle doesnt support it. i've been looking around for a week trying to figure this mess out. I didnt realize it was a free download for PS4. I saw what i thought was the first version in walmart but it was $29 and wasn't Battle Royal. Why is it free and why is there a version for sale. Researching what skins are and how this shit works. Dumb it down for me please

I bought this one a few months back:
It's garish as hell, but that might be a positive for a kid. It works well, especially for the cost, and it works on PC too (which is actually where I've mostly used it).

Edit: Uh, the board is trying and failing to make a fancy amazon link instead of just posting the address. It's called the BENGOO G9000 Stereo Gaming Headset.

Don't buy ANYTHING for Fortnite, other than the headset. Battle Royale is all that matters, and it's totally free. They make their money on in-game purchases (v-bucks) that let you get outfits (skins) and other paraphenalia.

The great thing is that all the shit you can buy is cosmetic. Nothing gives you an advantage in the game. So you can be cheap and tell your kid it's cool to beat people with just the standard skin, cuz it's embarrassing for them.

And the game is dead simple: 100 start, one wins. Like a giant Hunger Games. And every game is about 10 mins or less because they continuously shrink the field of play.

It's fun. You get slaughtered for a while till you figure out what everything does, but after you die you can watch other people play and you figure everything out quickly.

It took me an my 11yo about 5 minutes to be having fun.

This is the one my 14-year-old son has had since early September. It goes without saying how much he uses it. Thanks, @MyDaughterLovesTomGordon for the intel on the V-bucks.

ETA: Ah, same problem as Amazon link above, but the same headset: BENGOO G9000 Stereo Gaming Headset

Got my 9yo these for xmas. He uses them for Fortnite on PS4 and I steal them when I need to make skype calls on my laptop and can't hear certain people because they don't know how to adjust their mic volume:

Turtle Beach Ear Force Stealth 450 Fully Wireless PC Gaming Headset with DTS Headphone:X 7.1 Surround Sound

I will say this about Fortnite for an 8yo. With a headset they can not only hear the game and stuff going on, but they hear it better. They can tell where footsteps and shots are coming. But, they can also turn on the chat and hear what others on their team say, and chat with them I quickly had to squash that feature since you really don't know who they are talking with. I listed in on a game and it was F bomb after F bomb and you're going to die 'nig'. Real classy stuff. So now he can only use the chat feature when he is in a duo/squad with 100% of real life friends.I believe the chat will be off by default, but if not you can easily find it in the settings. I caught him with it on the other day with strangers and that was a quick three day suspension. Well, for me it was quick, not for him. Full week on the next one!

Good luck and I encourage you to sit and watch and play with him if you have another device. Playground mode is where you can practice. You can make it so it's just the two of you in the game. Really helps to learn the mechanics. We like to pick a spot on the map to meet after say five minutes of collecting stuff, and battle each-other.

Also echo what others said, it's free, so don't pay for anything. My cousin was traveling for work and got it for his kids for xmas by cashing in his Dave and Buster's tickets...lol. I had to tell him he just wasted them all.

i bought the bengoo g9000 and they lasted until last week and the mic went out. so i thought. so i called amazon and they were 8days out of warranty. the guy told me they were Chinese and the company couldn't be reached. he gave me a full refund. didn't have to send back. i then went and bought the turtle beach wireless set recommended. they did the same thing. ps4 not detecting mic. i read 10k internet complaints of the same thing but zero results on a fix. i guess I'll have 2 working sets of headphones if i can fix the ps4 issue

Ugh, that's a drag. My son's are still fine, and let's just say if he held a cleaning implement in his hand as much as he wears those things on his head, our house would be spotless. He plays on an XBox, so maybe that makes a difference?
