Bloom has put together some promotions, trades and acquisitions (accusations) that have quickly stocked the team with some intriguing if not proven talent. Vertugo, who is already proven....also he's picked up Arroyo and Downs (both 2B), promoted Dalbec and has Casas close to ready by fall 2021. I'm still not sure about Duran... but if all these guys can pan out, they've got a very good future lineup. Obviously, as mentioned, this is all more intriguing more than guaranteed but it's left me with a sense of optimism for the future (not getting into the "ifs" here.

1B, DH, 3B- Dalbec, Casas, Devers, JDM*, Chavis*
2B-Arroyo, Downs, Chavis
SS- X
OF- Benintendi, Chavis, Vertugo, JBJ*, Duran, Jimenez

*future on team after '20 in question
Not to be a jerk, but it's VerDugo. Autocorrect maybe?

Verdugo. Hmmm..... just misspelled and then missed it apparently. Dalbec has been autocorrecting to Malbec.
I wish someone here would provide some insight into Muñoz. He's intriguing but I don't know much about him, nor am I any good at digging deeply into analysis of him and extrapolating anything worthwhile.....

Yeah, they have to make a ton of space on the 40 man as you said, something like 12 guys too many right now between IL activation and guys they need to protect. Tapia looked awesome in his late season appearance against NY, happy he is out of the division.

They also have plenty of JAGs who are easy decisions to jettison...Triggs, Kickham, Covey, Brice, Stock, Leyer, Mazza, Springs, Brasier. Plus JBJ will be off the roster (even if they intend to re-sign him). That's 10 spots plus Tapia's that can be freed up. I count seven on long-term IL who have to be added back (though at least one could be let go), leaving them at least four spots for Rule 5 protection (Groome, Mata, Wong, Seabold, Potts seem to be the must-protects).

BOS did the first half of this, clearing space for the guys on the IL to be re-added.

So these scrubs are all still on the 40-man, right? Covey, Brice, Stock, Springs, and Jose Peraza. I would have zero regrets if Kyle Hart was dumped instead of added from the injured list.
JBJ is still on there but will become a free agent Wednesday or Thursday.
If we need another spot after that, it's probably time to move Pedroia off there.

Next year is the last season of his contract. If they didn't want to cut him before because of cap implications that wouldn't matter any more, right?

The only reason he was kept around is 1. they thought there was a slight change he might be able to play again, or more likely 2. they hoped at some point he would do them a favor and cut a retirement deal to save them some money.

Clearly now it's just about the money, so either he will cut them a deal to retire, maybe saving them a few million on their 2021 CBT, or he will be paid in full. One way or another he should be gone in the next few weeks. If they play with a 39-man 40-man roster because of Pedroia sentimental reasons this winter that is pathetic.

When Cuddyer retired in the final year of his deal the Mets paid him 2.5 of his 12.5 salary and saved 10 million.

Had assumed Martin Perez would be hanging around for another year, given the relatively low-risk of picking his option, but....

Then again, he didn't really limit home runs, didn't strike anyone out, and walked a bunch of guys. His xFIP was above 5.00 and his FIP just under. Pitching depth is always valuable, but maybe its not as obvious as I thought that they pick up the option?

One thing I read that makes sense (sadly) is especially in the pandemic market, no one would pay him 6.5M/yr for those numbers. Decline it and see if you can get him back for even less. Pinching pennies but that's the world we live in...

Currently, there are 31 players on the 40-man roster after these latest moves.

Benintendi, Brewer, Hart, Pedroia, Rodriguez and Sale will need to be added from the 45-day IL list (or otherwise dealt with).

Groome, Mata, Potts, Rosario, Seabold and Wong are expected to be added to the 40-man roster before the winter meetings.

On the assumption that Pedroia's situation is not resolved before the winter meetings, my guess is that, of the six players on the 45-day IL list, only Hart will be outrighted from the 40-man roster, meaning that there are still 2-3 more moves coming before the winter meetings (Perez option declined?, some combo of Hall/Mazza/Springs/Stock/Walden/Weber outrighted?). Hall and Walden seem like the most obvious choices among the six listed.

What do we think is a reasonable return there? C level? He didn't exactly pitch well for the Cubs.
Probably not even that, he was a 31 year old with a career era over 5 in 200 career innings when they traded him, him pitching badly for the Cubs was pretty predictable and I was shocked anyone would even give them anything at all.

They'll probably send Osich back to the Sox.
