His defense has always been excellent. We're basically getting a slightly worse hitting Pedroia.

deep inside Guido territory

Felt that they needed another infielder looking good towards the postseason roster. Kinsler slides in as starter at 2B moving Holt back to super utility role when Devers gets back. Adds a good hitter to bottom part of order.

How’s his defense?

I’m not very enthusiastic about his bat.
He's always been a terrific defender and glancing at his defensive metrics it appears he's still good. As for his bat, looks like he's been hitting well for a couple months now. wRC+ by month: 66, 76, 102, 143

Kinsler has bumped his AVG up 20 points over his last 10 games so I guess you could say he's trending the right way.

Isn't he hurt right now? Probably would have been if not for that.

This may mean Devers will be out for awhile, perhaps for precautionary reasons.
Not sure it means that. It means we have everyday 2B and Nunez plays third til Devers gets back.

Then Holt and Nunez are utility guys assuming Devers gets healthy.

$11 million salary for 2018. Even pro-rated, looks like the Sox have indeed gone over the next luxury tax threshold.

Like this move. Kinsler has been hitting better as the season has rolled along. If other teams have done more to improve their pens we may have no better choice than to ratchet up our already great offense.

I thought we had just concluded that that [edit: going over the top threshold] had likely happened with the Eovaldi deal.

Kinsler's contract this year is 11M, pro-rated left is about 3.6M.

So this definitely is taking us well over the 237. we're all in.

FWIW Price just compared Kinzler to Dustin Pedroia, said he's excited.

He's a fantastic defender. Has had a pretty darned good SLG for a 2B in his career. 4x All-Star. Good BB/SO career ratio.
Having a great July.

Fantastic move, DDski.

I'm also partially biased as a jew, i have to admit.

Nice symmetry with Pedroia injured (are they still BFF's?) and Kapler in town.

I’m going to need to find out his tipping habits and whether he pees looking at his phone before I can really weigh in on this deal.

Lots of reliever depth in minors and not room for all of them on the 40 man this winter so the give isn’t too bad. Wish they could have made it Workman and kept Buttrey, who will have options still next season.

Good infield depth piece, but wish we didn’t need it. Gotta think he’ll regress from the hot month back to season average production, so basically a Pedroia replacement. Bummer, rather have Pedy back.

And who goes when Devers is healthy now? Does this mean he’s out until September 1 when rosters expand?
