I gotta say, I watch a decent amount of Red Sox baseball, follow other teams from more of a distance but keep up with the headlines across the sport, etc... and I don't think I can remember a more anonymous player (especially given that he's played in 12 major league seasons!) than Steve Pearce. When the Sox picked him up, I pretty much had no idea who he was.

Well, he's not anonymous anymore, that's for sure.
So glad we picked up this guy I'd never heard of.

I’m really happy for Santiago Espinal. If nothing else, he gets to be the answer to a fun trivia question.

There
Should've known he was destined for greatness when we traded for him and he IMMEDIATELY played great against the Yankees.
In my annual pilgrimage to Fenway, which this year was the early August Thursday night series opener vs the Yanks, Pearce hit 3 HRs and the Sox eventually swept the series. I went looking for a Pearce shirt after the game but I don't think they made any. At the time.

Yup, my hope is that Pearce's age keeps him from being priced out of Boston. I think the Moreland+Pearce platoon at 1B is really a case of the sum being greater than the parts. Wouldn't want either starting 150 games, but each is adequate at holding the position down at stretches during slumps and injuries from the other.

I love Pearce, and wouldn't mind if he stuck around, but I've also accepted that they might've caught lightning in a bottle and will just enjoy what he brought in 2018. His pickup reminded me of the '04 pickups like Cabrera and Minkalphabet.

Steve Pearce seems like a combination of Mike Lowell (ca 2007) and Jonny Gomes (ca 2013). In both cases, a guy who greatly exceeded regular season performance and any optimistic post-season expectations.
That said, as much as I would be thrilled in the after-glow of this week to see Pearce in Red Sox whites next year on Opening Day for the ovation he so richly deserves for his performance this post-season, I’d be very wary about any significant outlay of dollars on a new contract.
As Pablo noted above, a platoon of him and Mitch might be fine on paper, but I’m not sure Pearce would want to be the short-side of a platoon on this his last contract, unless there is an overpay for that level of contribution.

Pearce reminds me a bit of Donn Clendenon for the Mets in '69. 35 years old. Mid season pickup. At his best a RH platoon partner at 1st base. Given a bigger role in the WS because the Orioles started LHPs 4 times in 5 games. 3 HRs. Series MVP.

I don’t think he’d strictly be the short side of a platoon. He could factor into the OF mix, especially in Fenway’s LF and over the course of a season would likely be the #2 DH behind Martinez. He could see 300 regular season PAs pretty realistically.

That said, much more than his current $6.5M isn’t a good fit for that role. He was younger and had a comparably strong year before signing that deal with Toronto so it’s possible that the market won’t offer more.

I don't know how this stuff works, but I'd figure Pearce has a good a shot as anybody as parlaying his Sox playing career into a broadcast job. (He would not be worse than Gomes.) Offer him a two-year deal with a handshake agreement to keep him in the system after he retires. He'll be treated as a Red Sox demigod for life.

Short of a trade for Goldschmidt, I can't see another first base move that makes sense if we're gonna win it all again next year.

Dude was so anonymous that he played for every team in the division, the teams we play 18 times a year, and I never heard of the guy until he came to the Sox.

I knew who he was before arriving to the Redsox. I didn't know how good he has been the last 6 years or if he was still in the league. The last I knew, he was on the Orioles. Never knew he was on the Rays or the Jays.

Only three players the history of the game have had back-to-back World Series games each with a HR and at least three RBI.

They are Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and Steve Pearce. MVP indeed....

It is heartwarming — and hilarious — to see that he has his own category on the MLB Network crawl.
