They're starting to be entertaining in a perverse way. Every night they redefine how bad a pitcher can be.

They should run a promotion where Red Sox fans get to open the game for them. It’s in service of history.

has there been any more speculation on draft order now that it seems plausible a "whole season" will be played? If it is just by this year's record, why not tank? Getting the #1 pick would do wonders for this farm system.

edit: not just for the Kumar/Leiter pick but better draft position for Chaim to do his thing in his first real draft. This season is weird, throw out some retreads, hope you find another Valdez for the middle of the pen, and pray we get one of those two guys to help anchor our rotation in 2022.

Dave Bush is not going to put 2020 on his pitching coach resume.
When the team turns it around (which I still believe will happen in sooner seasons rather than later ones), he'll say he "learned a lot that year." And then they'll suck again and he'll be fired. As the song goes (and bringing it back to the thread title) "The seasons . . . go round and round; the painted ponies go up and down....."

Agreed on the first, disagreed on the second. I wouldn't be surprised if Bush is fired or moved into a different role after fielding one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB history. It won't be entirely fair given the carousel of hot dog vendors taking the mound and the injuries, but even the established guys like Eovaldi and Barnes have been bad, and the reclamation projects (Godley, Weber, etc.) have been generally disastrous. Valdez is the only pitcher on the roster who seems to have taken a major stride this year, right?

I think Bush is more likely gone after this season because the whole staff will be gone rather than as a scapegoat for the under-performance of the pitching staff.

Except for any guys the next manager might want to retain. like Febles, Goodwin, Hyers, Bjornson, and Ramon Vazquez. That next manager might already know these guys. Might even make Roenicke his bench coach!

I was shooting from the hip. I have no real insight on how to evaluate Bush, when the pitching staff has so few major leaguers. I think a lot of his future might depend on who the next manager is. Removing him as PC, as you say, would not be totally fair, but It wouldn't be surprising.

It‘s looking quite possible that this could be the worst MLB team of the last 100+ years. Considering we have the worst pitching staff of all time (Granted, two excellent arms are out for the season), I’m not convinced we can put together a 5-17 finish to avoid the worst record in team history. We need what, a 3-19 finish to avoid the worst win percentage in the modern era?

Every Kyle Hart pitch makes me feel like we’re not getting three more Ws this year. Shame I gotta make this my first post, but you gotta do it.

It’s almost impossible to win games with this staff. Last night finally put me over the hump into the “Don’t expect another win until 2021” level of expectations. Hope the youth injection from these trades will pan out.

Can you imagine 25 losses in a row? Because I sure as hell can. We wouldn’t be a top-4 team in the Eastern League this year.

So Valdez has been pretty bad his last two outings. Can't be perfect I suppose but looks like his walk issues have come back?

He's also fallen in love with his changeup. When he was doing better he was mixing pitches and avoiding walks.

Got up this morning and ,out of habit, checked the box score of last night's game. I had to assume from the list of pitchers (Triggs, Hall, Valdez, Tapia, Leyer and Stock) that the Red Sox have now hired a law firm to handle the pitching for the rest of the year.

Imagine if BenJarvus Green-Ellis was their ace? I’m into it.

I remember there were some guys in 1994 right before the strike that were horrible (Todd Frowirth comes to mind). They got brought up because they had major league contracts; therefore, when the strike started, the Sox didn't have to pay them if they were in the majors.

Just looked up Frowirth (RIP). ERA in 1994 was over 10. Re-emerged in 1996 for a 5 inning stint with the Angels, ERA also over 10.

That pitch almost looks like it's a Deep Fake. Surreal.
I'm aware that that was against the Marlins- but between the improvement in the lineup that Bloom has managed for the future, along with that debut, I'm feeling optimistic today.

I can't remember the last time the Sox got a start like that from a homegrown pitcher. No, ERod doesn't count, he was acquired from Baltimore for Andrew Miller (in retrospect, a damn good trade).

My namesake had a pretty damn good debut.
Yes he did and pitched well enough that he deserved the win. I was at that game with my mom who had taken me up to Boston for some one-on-one time before I got married a month or so later. Rumors were swirling that day regarding Manny being traded and he ended up sitting out the game because of the trade deadline. I nearly got my first and only home run ball that day. We were sitting in the right field box and John Olerud homered. Just as the ball was taking a hop and coming toward me, I got pushed pretty hard from behind. The ball hit my hands as I tumbled forward, but I wasn't able to complete the catch.

Did the fans in the bleachers boo you, and inform you that you suck for not catching it?

It could have been worse, you could have been the grown adult that takes his mitt to the game.

FWIW, I loved Paps from that day; sadly, as well as he pitched, he turned into an a-hole. At least it was in Philly.
