It's certainly not exciting, but it's a good move if they can add one more starter. Sale obviously won't be ready for a while, even if E-Rod is healthy he might have to cut back on innings after sitting out a year, and Eovaldi is always an injury risk. Depth is important, as last year -- when they had NO depth -- proved.

Perez pitched one great game against the Yankee 'A' lineup in mid-September, I was very impressed.

Great deal, he was very good last year for what they paid him, if he matches that then having him for 2 years is great and if he reverts then no harm done.

Yeah, his first start stunk and his last start stunk, but in between he was generally pretty good.
And he is only committed to for one year so it is not a bad signing and Bloom actually saved the Sox about 1.5 million by declining his option after 2020 and re-signing him for much less.

It's vanilla, but exactly the type of deal they should be making. At worst he's the bulk guy on bullpen games, at best he's what they had last year. Innings are innings.

Nice to have a guy who wanted to be here after a god awful team season

I'd have preferred to see a bit more upside, but they do need a ton of innings pitched, and it is worthwhile that he seems to fit in, so this seems good. It makes me more convinced the next pitcher addition needs to be someone genuinely good. I'll. Be disappointed. If they sign Odorizzi and call it a rotation, I'll be disappointed. Maybe they do see something specific to get more out of one or more of Pivetta/Eovaldi/Perez/Houk

Exactly my sentiments. I think this is an excellent signing if they also sign Odorizzi, if this is it for starting pitching than they are leaving themselves too shallow to compete.

The longer we keep talking about odorozzi without signing him the more likely the Yankees overpay him to be pitching depth

Sorry, I think a typo obscured my meaning: I actually don't like Odorizzi that much, and if Odorizzi is the big add, I would have liked to see more upside than Perez in his slot. But if they can find someone with #2 upside, Perez makes sense (presumably by trade). I would be shocked if they don't add any other starters at all.

I pretty much agree with grimshaw's take and what I highlighted from allmanbro's post. In all likelihood whoever filled that slot would have done so for similar money. It's the devil you know or the devil you don't know and Perez at that money will hopefully serve them well.

As the resident Yankee expert, zero chance they are competing with you for Odorizzi. They are at $207M and determined to stay under $210M, and they don't have much flexibility to move salary.

It’s not about paying the tax this year, it’s about resetting the tax rate for subsequent seasons because if they splurge for one of the pricy shortstops next winter, they will be over for years to come. They may end up going over, but no chance it’s going to be for Odorizzi.

It's also possible that they have some specific ideas for him; they've signed him twice now, and gotten team options both times.

Since he left Texas after 2018, his swinging strike rates are up a bit, and his hard hit rates down a bit. He added a cutter in 2019 and started throwing his changeup more last year (which was the Sox plan last year). He had a bit of prospect hype coming up. So you can squint and see some real upside there.

Good, this makes a lot of sense.
been waiting all winter for this game changer, Sox F.O. doing work, Wow! .500 is doable! with moves like this they can stay in the hunt looking for bargain deals in the basement all winter, the problem with this approach is spring follows every winter, I am starting to get the vibe that 4 was enough for this ownership...

What should they have done?

Bloom’s sudden pivot back to Pérez after they reportedly didn’t stay in contact before declining his option makes me wonder if a deal has opened up where Eovaldi gets moved.

Eovaldi surely rebuilt a lot of his value over a good 2020, and his Yankee-killer status may be better applied right now in, say, Anaheim. He’s an asset when healthy but likely not part of the next great Red Sox team, and I’m sure Bloom could find a good way to spend the money.

4 was enough for THIS player for this Chief Baseball Officer. Every team needs player's like this. Not an entire roster's worth, but a certain percentage that's signed to fill a certain role(s) at an affordable cost.

I also wonder if the return of Alex Cora might have anything to do with bringing him back. Cora wasn't with the team last year, but maybe there is something he's seen in Perez either last year or previously that factored into the decision to resign Perez.

This is an interesting thought and when you first posted it, I initially thought of the Angels also, but the problem is that very few teams want to take on a 2/34 deal right now. If Bloom was willing to pay a big chunk of the deal though, I agree that they could get some prospect talent back for him. FWIW the baseballtradevalues site has him as a net negative right now given his contract (-10.1).

This is true, turns out.

Yeah, he’s still underwater but an asset if healthy, if that makes sense. Depending where Bauer signs, I could see the Angels or Cardinals interested in Eovaldi, with the Sox taking a big contract in return.

Eovaldi and Vazquez to STL makes some sense. The NL Central is wide open, Knizner can’t stick behind the plate and their rotation is a mess with Hudson needing TJ surgery and Martinez still a question mark. Bloom could target pitching prospects Liberatore, Zack Thompson and/or Genesis Cabrera and take back Fowler’s last year ($16.5M). Fowler still hits righties so he’d work well in a platoon with Enrique Hernandez, who they’re reportedly showing “strong interest in.”

Sadly for you there are two more months of winter for you to wait on what is assuredly a completely locked in 25 man roster. Hopefully John Henry sells the team and we bring in someone who wants to win these things. At least Alex Cora gets another year to think about what he's done.

And even then the team will need depth.

Let's not over estimate the Perez signing. Bloom didn't pick up the option after 2020 because Perez is not a 6 million pitcher but when the price come down Bloom jumped at signing him because he did a decent job in 2020. This was all about the $$ and the 1.75 million that Bloom saved the Sox.

The only way I see that happening is as part of a deal where the Sox have a bigger contract coming back, so the partner team is still shedding salary overall.

I'm not sure where I over estimated anything. As I said in post #39...
