I don't understand how Kluber had a 3.0 fWAR. Or how Nick Pivetta had a 2.6 bWAR. Is Nick Pivetta a #2 starter?
Kluber is cooked. He was solid in the first half and got absolutely shelled in the second half. Kluber's average fastball:
- 2020: 91.7
- 2021: 90.6
- 2022: 88.9
Kluber will be 37 next season. If Kluber is the #2 SP that the beat reporters are all suggesting we'll sign, I'm about ready to get the pitchforks out.
His average four-seamer fastball is 88.9, which is why he only threw 36 of them last year. He’s purely a junk ball artist now, but even without a fastball he has impeccable command. I wouldn’t call him a #2 starter these days, but I definitely don’t think he’s cooked.
His 2022 looked unlucky. He did a nice job of limiting hard contact (13th-lowest of 140 starting pitchers with 100+ IP, right next to Sandy Alcantara), yet he still came away with a .317 BABIP, which was the 20th highest among those same 140 starters.
He also, somehow, has the
third-highest chase rate of pitches out of the zone (38.8%, trailing only Gausman and Tyler Anderson).
Pitching fWAR and bWAR can be goofy, and Kluber certainly ain’t what he used to be. But I’m also not seeing a ton of evidence he was worse the second half.
Mar/Apr: .332 expected wOBA against
May: .336
June: .261
July: .323
Aug: .326
Sept/Oct: .286
Not my first choice, but I’d certainly take him at that Fangraphs crowdsourced contract of 1/$11M.
