The Boston Red Sox have been very active in the early stages of free agency, and expect to be able to announce new players soon.

I think it's good to give the OP this resource, but I think a thread focused on general red sox rumors makes a lot of sense.

I have to say, things have been really quiet on the Red Sox front. This front office doesn't leak. I have no idea what they are prioritizing or what to expect this off-season. I don't know if I have ever felt that way.

MLB trade rumors barely has anything stories that tag them, this off-season.

Ever since they ejected Lucchino from the org the FO seems to have been low leak.

C'mon, if this was a poster that's been around these parts a while you never would have said anything. We have this thread every year, let's not post down to a new person just because you can. This community is 100x better at collecting all the info out there and centralizing it than that website. It just so happens @jcormjmac started what was going to be started eventually

appreciate was my first one, i have actually posted.. and i have read many in past - titled Winter Meetings and such with all kinds of potentials, i just found it odd a news source was sitting imminent announcements.. and such when i have not heard or seen much, the link for the rumors when you click type in Red sox , there is very little too, I love reading all the threads and every once in a while there is a gem or piece of information there are a lot of amazing responses from other posters no one sees coming, and next thing you know its happening, I'm just a rumor guy and as stated with so quiet , lets kick the can and see what pops up,

Point taken. But normally these threads at least start with some substance too, like an actual rumor in this case. Or else we can start the 2023 trade deadline thread now too

Stop thread policing. It's appreciated, but that's what Mods are for. (You'll put us out of business :) )

Let alone the effect this has on the SoSH secret mod police, the Vecheka.

I just can't wait for the Red Sox mouthpieces to tell us how much they are planning to spend before "coming in second" with a bunch of players. Otherwise why would they be continuously saying how much they plan to spend?

I mean, that's about as noncommittal as a rumor gets, but I wouldn't be shocked if Eovaldi moves quickly. It's sort of the lowest hanging fruit of the Sox' to-do list.
that's what I'm meaning even with the SI "Announcements SOON" no players no even direction of what ifs..

The signal to noise ratio in this thread is poor. (And yes, I realize this post is part of the noise.)

I'd be more inclined to tender Cordero and non-tender Brasier. They each have their moments, but are wildly inconsistent. I think Brasier is what he is, but with Cordero I have some hope that he might be more consistently productive if he could get ABs as DH, rather than having to worry about playing defense.

But maybe they're not that exited about what's available on the market (FA or trade) in terms of the bullpen. But that'd be very worrisome, as it's the area in biggest need of upgrade.

Also sometimes guys get signed back cheaper after the players see who else is interested (or not).

The non-tender deadline is tonight at 8 PM ET.

Since this is the rumor thread, this belongs here until officially confirmed. Sox are tendering Ryan Brasier as today is the deadline to do that.

I know Braiser has had some success in the majors, but my major concern is that Cora seems to go to him no matter if he is on his game or not. Last season it seemed as if it didn't matter how much Braiser sucked, Cora would also go to him in a close game situation.

For anyone young enough to not get Speier's reference, Google Y2k.

Some people thought the world would end as every computer everywhere crashed due to the date change.

Also, I miss Charlie Steiner:

Thanks for posting that. Sure, Steiner worked on camera, but he had one chance to do something non-traditional and he hit it out of the park! I forgot about that commercial, but it had me giggling all over again.

Tendering Brasier and Taylor? So guess we are looking at something like this as of now…

Barnes, Houck, Schreiber, Brasier, Taylor, Ort, German, Kelly

Imagine they will add a few more guys, certainly another lefty.

Not sure what Chaim sees in Brasier? He's pretty bad.

I don't normally comment on Red Sox transactions because I don't follow them like the rest of you, but good God, Brasier isn't someone you tender. He's someone you clear off the roster over the winter with a handshake deal that he's invited back in the spring if/when no one else gives him a guaranteed contract. In Cleveland we call him Bryan Shaw.

I completely agree.
I can't even with this. Thank you Brasier for 2018, but by next season that will be 5 goddamn years ago. Enough is enough. Or I guess now apparently enough is NOT enough. I've been a Bloom supporter, but this one is triggering me. I don't get this, I don't like this, I don't want this.
Jesus, just the thought of Brasier taking up a roster spot is bad enough, the idea that he will be pitching for us in close games again next year is putting me on tilt.

The Bloom and Brasier thing reminds me of Don Sweeney and his locking up of 7th and 8th defenseman
Just baffling.

I'm not understanding the Brasier hate here. He had a 136 ERA+ and 3.78 FIP from '18-'21. His down '22 seems to be a product of bad luck. His hr/9 and k/9 were right in line with his career norms, his bb/9 was way down, and his 3.61 FIP was actually a bit better than his career norm.
He had four nuclear meltdown games where he allowed 17 runs in 2.1 innings. In the other 64 appearances he had a perfectly workmanlike 2.98 ERA.
He has a lot of value of you use him properly - against the bottom of the order with a lead or down by a run or two late in the game. He's not a guy you throw against the meat of the Blue Jays order in a tie game (which Cora did twice), but he has his spots as a "filler", mid-leverage arm in the bullpen. And he's cheap.

IIRC, Franchy wasn't the "prize" in that deal. I do hope that his being cut loose is an indicator that the team is looking for a clear, full time corner OF solution with run producing capabilities and above average defensive skills.
No comments from Chawson yet? His binky is gone!

I honestly got some of his defense of Franchy and could squint enough to see how- if he was utilized properly- as pretty much just a DH with occasional games rotating to RF or LF depending on the park- where he could be an above average player.
But it shouldn’t be hard to find other Franchys out there- hopefully better ones.
But now at this point it’s more likely Duran will be given a shot.

And agree- I’m done with Brazier. He also seems easily replaceable at best

He's still young, but IMO Duran is not very good in the OF and is a speed guy who hasn't yet shown the he's a good base runner. A shade over 300 ABs is still a fairly SSS, but right now it's hard for me to see much more than we were getting out of JBJ other than contractually.

Just looking at his usage, it’s pretty clear that Cora likes Brasier. Bloom isn’t doing this in a vacuum.
I think he got especially exposed in the 3-batter era and there are better options -- or at least not-worse options -- likely available.
The biggest surprise, at least in the eyes of the public, is likely the Sox opting to hang on to reliever Ryan Brasier. The 35-year-old has a 4.82 ERA and 1.316 WHIP since the start of 2019, and his 5.78 ERA in 2022 was 10th-highest in the majors among pitchers to throw at least the 62⅓ innings he did. Internally, however, the Sox remain encouraged both by his high-90s fastball and his 24.3 percent strikeout rate a year ago.
