I plan to pivot to talking about how neither Sale nor Paxton will ever walk again, let alone throw a baseball.
Or that they're going to play next season without a right fielder ... and get better production out of that spot as a result

At what rate does the salary “cap” go up?

In 5 years what can we expect to be? Does that factor in at all for these kinds of deals? $30M now isn’t the same as $30M in 5-6 years in terms or crippling salary construction. I don’t think anyway.

If Devers wants to get paid like he's a FA this year, I see no reason to prioritize a deal.

Strangely optimistic today so I'll guess 7/$190. Then we'll hear reports about Chicago having offered like $40M more.

Boras' posturing and leaking was all intended to get the Sox to come as close as possible to other teams' offers, since his client instructed him to get the largest possible deal from the Boston Red Sox!

Pete sometimes gets into it a little too much with “fans“ on Twitter. But he’s a solid, hard-working reporter. He may also have been encouraged by his editors to amp up his opinions and takes on the Red Sox now that he’s in the Cafardo columnist role. Which would explain why he sometimes seems to be siding with inciting the shrieking masses about the potential to lose players. But I like him.

I'll be as happy as anyone, and pleasantly surprised, if/when Xander comes back ... but in reality it still just counts as keeping the shortstop they've had for years. It doesn't improve the lineup, it just keeps it from getting worse

But it allows them to really focus on those other areas of need, and avoid any potential distractions from this, which was likely their highest priority. It also gives them an actual idea of what they are working with and how much they can budget for those other areas of need.

That's kind of what I was getting at. It's fine and all, but problems still remain

And we finally lock up our star shortstop for good after a revolving door post-Nomar.

I get this--but there's also the reality that the Sox have NO SS right now. So it all kinda depends on your POV.

I look at signing Bogaerts as one of two things on the “Don’t F this up” checklist along with extending Devers. Wrapping this up allows us to pivot to the juicy, more entertaining less frightening aspect of FA which is shopping for new toys instead of making sure we don’t lose our current ones.

What? Bogey has played more games at shortstop for the Red Sox than anyone in history. What "revolving door" are you talking about?

If the Sox resign Bogey, can we put the nonsense that the ownership group and the FO is cheap? Or do we need to still cling to that?
I believe when he signs, we start the thread about how overpaid he will be by 2026 and how these emotional decisions fly in the face of everything we were sold on as to why Chaim Bloom was brought to the Red Sox.

Bonus points if we trade Marcelo.

And costs an extra 8-12mm AAV per year for the next four years.

I don't mean it as cynical, it's just the truth of the situation.
I agree (and the rotation is even worse) but I'm also hopeful that signing Xander is an indication that they have plans to address the lineup and the rotation as well. Otherwise, what's the point?

It allows the Sox to focus on other areas of the team to improve. If Bogey signs elsewhere then the Sox need to figure out what they are going to do about shortstop and Myers is not an answer. So while yes, this is technically not an addition to the team, it helps the team by locking up a position and allowing the front office to focus on strengthening other areas of the team. Further it allows the team to take resources that might have had to be expended to plug the shortstop hole and utilize them to strengthen other areas of the team.

Yep LogansDad and I posted about that earlier. But until we see what steps they take to shore up the lineup, they're pretty much as they were at season's end, minus JD

But the Sox don't have a SS right now. Unless you think the Sox should have gone after a better SS, or have a plan for them being better next year without him than they would have been with him, I don't know how you can put a "marching in place" spin on it.
I'm not. It's a plus to have him come back.
