What? Bogey has played more games at shortstop for the Red Sox than anyone in history. What "revolving door" are you talking about?
What I mean is that shortstop was a revolving door after Nomar left and before Xander came along. Renteria, Gonzalez, Lugo, Gonzalez again, etc etc. Just an observation that we finally found someone permanent after that and the idea of them being a Sox lifer is nice. That’s all.

Jumping on a plane for 2 hours. I hope to land to good news.
Proceed to the nearest Red Sox person upon arrival. They will have good news (It is pre-ordained).

I’m intrigued by who might be our RF trade targets (and who the Sox will part with to get them, presuming the Red Sox person is correct about X).

I’d prefer a stop-gap RF solution and a bigger investment in the rotation than the other way around.

Maybe live with a Refsnyder/Max Kepler platoon in RF, sign Senga or trade for Pablo Lopez, and for DH, sign a veteran who can fill in at other positions like Justin Turner or Evan Longoria.

But the Sox don't have a SS right now. Unless you think the Sox should have gone after a better SS, or have a plan for them being better next year without him than they would have been with him, I don't know how you can put a "marching in place" spin on it.
This feels like a "well, actually" kind of response. I mean, sure, the Sox don't currently employ Xander. And I'll be thrilled if/when they bring him back. But re-signing him doesn't improve the team over the 2022 baseline. It holds serve. Which is a great step.

I'll be as happy as anyone, and pleasantly surprised, if/when Xander comes back ... but in reality it still just counts as keeping the shortstop they've had for years. It doesn't improve the lineup, it just keeps it from getting worse
Not worse than the 9th-best offense in 2022? Or not worse than the #3 offense we saw in 2021 when not everyone went missing and was replaced by AAA guys playing out of position? My point is, sign me up for not-worse!

Inception? Negotiating for more money? Simultaneous Xander/Devers deals???

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

So here's what's going to happen. The Sox will re-sign Bogaerts for a long contract at pretty big dollars. We will all (or almost all) be thrilled. But somewhere in there he'll have a bad season and everyone will be like, why did we waste all this money on a clearly declining Xander? Now we're stuck with the rest of this huge contract!

well, JD Martinez was a big part of that 2021 offense and he regressed significantly + is a free agent. Not to mention old friend Renfroe

you’d hope a healthy Story in 23 makes up for some it though.

The Red Sox had Bogaerts in the lineup. He became a free agent. If they bring him back, which it looks like, as @8slim said, it holds serve and they can go from there.

Wait until the Judge decline...

Maybe they're locking down Devers simultaneously, so they can make a joint announcement. Followed by signing Rodon and trading for a solid RFer.

Yep, just as there's hope that a healthy Sale (and perhaps Paxton) can help make up for the absence of Eovald, Wacha and Hill in the rotation

Handshakes are so 2019.
Of course

Not sure its happening today, but I do believe keeping X SIGNIFICANTLY increases our chances of keeping Devers. Which is probably obvious.

Right and I'm not giving up on squeezing one last bounce-back season out of JD if they bring him back. 5 HRs in his last 15 games was noteworthy given his long history of power production. Not sure he's done.

Man, you guys are like a middle-age woman in menopause. I remember those mood swings. They weren't fun.
Calm down, guys. As far as I can tell, nothing has happened yet.

He was still a pretty decent overall hitter, just lacked power.

They were apparently talking to CV as well ... might as well get the band back together

There's no need to scold anyone. We don't need thread policing, that's what the Dopes are for. This is a rumors thread. People are going to talk about rumors and things appears to be moving brisky.

"We were a 78-win team, but by bringing all the hitters back, fortifying the bullpen, and having Chris Sale for a full season, we think we can contend."

Even if they just keep Refsnyder in RF and he produces full time what he did last season*.... improvements from Story# and Casas over Dalbec/Franchy.**.. the offense will be pretty great. Top 10 in the league easy.

*unlikely
#likely
**very likely

I plan to pivot to talking about how neither Sale nor Paxton will ever walk again, let alone throw a baseball.
Sale will definitely walk again, unfortunately while walking he'll trip on a garden hose, land on his shoulder, and need reconstructive surgery.

Is this a joke? My, we're awfully serious, aren't we?
If you look back, this may be my first post in this thread. I was just struck by the mood swings.

I agree he's not done but I might prefer going in a different direction with a more flexible "DH" that fill in elsewhere and allows you to rotate. Someone like Evan Longoria or Justin Turner would be a similarly great clubhouse addition and produced similar numbers to JD last season. Each could give Devers a day-off in the field, and Turner also has some experience at 2B and 1B. I don't think Longoria's done it before, but maybe he could play some 1B too to be the righty complement to Hosmer/Casas.

JD may end up similarly priced and less cooked, but I've always been a fan of those two. Especially Longo.
