I'm guessing that he really wanted to stay on the west coast and would not be surprised if he turned down a little more from somewhere else.
He’s been in Toronto for the past three years, and is from PA (although he went to HS and college in TX). I’m guessing the player opt out is not a direction the Sox wanted to go.

Maybe the FA market isn't completely insane. Maybe it's really just Preller and the Rangers splashing out outlier contracts.
I kind of think this is bingo. It’s Preller, the Rangers, Dombrowski and Cohen, and to some extent Cashman because of Judge specifically. That’s basically the same big-spending crew as last year.

After that group, the Sox have already handed out the sixth-highest total contract dollars of teams this offseason ($137.5M).

On the other hand, that’s 5 playoff teams, so how can that not be - in large part - the market, nevermind that the Giants also offered similar amounts.

I know free agency is far from over, but the options are dwindling and if the Sox end up as the 11th biggest spender given the money that came off the books and lack of deal with Xander, that's bad.

Adding Rodon would be an indication to me that we'll see another big signing (Correa or Swanson) and possibly a decent trade (Reynolds, Kepler, something like that). That makes us instantly more likely to compete this year. I can't imagine a world in which the front office decides to shell out money for one of the very few remaining difference maker FAs without following through with enough to be in the mix by the trade deadline. Any of the above alone simply don't move the needle enough and make no fiscal sense to me.

I agree, which is why I don’t think it’s a legit rumor. I can’t see them going all in at this point.

I don’t know that that would really be going all in. Rodon should clearly be useful for some time and they’re likely not getting much out of Sale and need rotation help.

The thing that stands out to me is that any leak that the Sox are interested has turned out to be not true or at least perceived as not true. Either Bloom is smoke screening with the Houck news and they’re actually making a ton at Rodon. Or they’re just putting it out there to raise the price.

Boras found another mouthpiece? Rodon has a QO attached, from everything we've heard, it's very unlikely Bloom signs any free agent with a QO attached.

Not to appease the fanbase, but to get better to win games. I would think that is the point.
With Boston's fan base, I'm not entirely sure. I mean, in 2021 the Sox got within two games of the WS, but a fair number of the fans I knew were still after Bloom's head. Thus the snark.

Partially Rodon, partially Eovaldi (Heyman)

Rodon remains the Yankees’ top priority despite the gap, and the sides are expected to work on potential compromises over the next few days. The Yankees believe Rodon wants to come to New York, but if they can’t bridge their difference, they may turn to their next choice, believed to be ex-Yankee Nate Eovaldi.

Sorry for the non-rumor bump (although Swanson at current off-season sticker price is a pass for me), but since Chad Jennings gets the most recent mentions here and it’s the main board, throwing this out:
Does anyone have a contact for him? I tried twitter and he doesn’t have DMs set up. I’m asking for permission to use an image for a SoSH Secret Santa gift but not sure any avenues are actually getting to him.
Thanks!

I am pretty sure the Yankees second choice is giving Rodon more money.

Short-term, high AAV contracts make sense when you're where the Sox are right now. You don't want to block your prospects, but you need to get better in order to appease the fanbase.
I am increasingly glad I live 3000 miles from the bulk of this fanbase.

Rodon seems to be the subject of extensive "negotiating through the media" although I have to confess some confusion as to how it works. They are pumping stories of him wanting at least $200m/7 years, but unlike the Bogaerts "leaks" they aren't saying anyone is biting; they are saying teams like the Cardinals aren't going there. Are teams negotiating through the media too? Will his price end up dropping?

What can Josh Harrison do at this stage of his career that Christian Arroyo can't?

Yeah, Harrison seems pretty redundant with Arroyo. Unless they are trading the latter? Or starting Harrison at 2B and Story at SS?

Chris, I don't know if it counts as a thickening plot if the plot just outright disappears.

Depends if they think Arroyo can stay on the field. He's an average player, redundant if Arroyo is healthy, but miles better than the dregs they had to play at 2b last year when both Story and Arroyo were hurt.

Cotillo is floating rumors that a guy who hasn't had a particularly noteworthy season since 2014 is "on their radar" & then retracting said nothing rumor...yikes.

Harrison was 2.1 WAR in 2021 and 1.6 this year. Cotillo thought he had some info, reported it, and then retracted it when he heard otherwise. I don't see the issue.

If anyone got into a tizzy about Josh Harrison, 2023 edition I genuinely worry about them. Hawaiian shirts must cause heart palpitations.
