Was he an IFA or part of the draft? Pretty old for an international prospect. I also wonder what he's been doing baseball related since 2017. 3 years is a long time.

edit: IFA. He's definitely a big dude tho. He also left Cuba in November 2018.

They used the Kevin Pillar money to cover this $25K signing.

I don't know that name, but a quick search suggests Mesa was signed by the Pirates and then the Sox signed him. So you're right that he is a more recent Cuban signing, so I will revise my prior comment to include "from Cuba"

Yeah, he defected back in like 2010 or 11. The Sox also had Roenis Elias but he was acquired by trade.

As the child of a Cuban refugee, I'm always excited when the Sox sign a Cuban ballplayer.

25 k isn't much money though and 21 isn't that young. I think I read a blurb on Sox Prospects from a press release that he has some raw power and some athleticism, but no one really knows anything about what type of player he is*.

Here's hoping he ends up like Bryan Mata or Darwinzon Hernandez - two Latin American players who signed for peanuts and have returned far more than we could have ever hoped at the time.

*I think this "report" may have come from his agent. It shouldn't be taken as gospel until someone actually gets eyes on him.
