I'd say that's the explanation for optioning Barnes, but another move is required to fit Belisario on the 40-man roster.

Multiple drug suspensions, one for cocaine, at least one DUI. Involvement in bench clearing brawls, etc.
Hasn't been a particularly good pitcher ever, has been terrible recently.
Then he'll fit right in in our bullpen.

He's the one who recently airmailed a pitch on an intentional walk, allowing Kipnis to score:

Belliasrio's xFIP the past 5 years:

2015: 3.42
2014: 3.69
2013: 3.83
2012: 3.10
2010: 3.71
2009: 3.76

Lifetime GB rate of 61%.  He gets Rs out especially.  He's better than Barnes and he's better than Breslow.  Lifetime 7.24K/9.  Who cares if he does cocaine?  The Yankees don't care that their best player is a cheater so why do we care if our Breslow-replacement snorted coke years ago?  Bellisario is a mediocre ground-ball machine that gets Rs out and he's better than half of our pen.  We should sign Joba to a minor league deal too (xFIP of 3.98 this year).

Is this the baseball version of punt? This pen has two MLB playoff worthy arms.
The brains that thought this pitching roster was competitive need to be purged and replaced. Then tweaking the starting 8 can be dealt with.

I care that he got a DUI. But aside from not respecting him as a person, I guess I can see this as a defensible move. Uninspiring, sure, but given the drek they've been using out of the pen, it's worth a shot.

Saw this guy mostly against the Giants, when he was with the Dodgers. He did look like a headcase on the mound, capable of sending one at your head at any time for no reason. Vicente Padilla or Alfredo Aceves revisited. Should have got him before Arod came into town.

He's probably just an arm they can abuse in an emergency a la Heath Hembree.
On a related note - Hembree is on the minor league DL.
