So are the Sox done?
Possibly?

My guess is that they are not done, but my guess is that there is not going to be anything all that significant happening. I feel as though if there were a robust market for JD he would have been traded by now. So one or two more smallish things.

I'm pretty sure the Padres aren't going to give away Campusano just to get someone to take Hosmer, whose deal is underwater but nowhere near the level of Sale.

I think if you give Chaim 10 years, he’ll be able to build an organisation like the Dodgers, able to compete year-in year-out.

But, the real danger is in the next few years. If we win 85 games this year and lose a 5-win player in Xander, how do we have any hope of contending next year? Bloom’s rebuilt the farm system and it’s a top 5 system, but it’s one with more quantity than quality. The math says that a couple from the middle tier of prospects will become stars and that’s how we’ll get back in contention again. But, it’s scary because we have no idea who will be good and even if the math says we can expect a star or two, sometimes the math doesn’t work out in the short term.

So, we’re going to lose one of our best players in free agency, and there aren’t a lot of premium free agents in this class where we can sign a replacement. The best players in our farm system are years away. The next few years could suck as a fan because the rest of the AL East are really good. Saying all that, I’ll repeat that if Chaim survives the next few years, we will end up as a contender year-in year-out. But, hearing Kennedy’s interview last week, I don’t think Bloom will survive two years of 80ish wins with a $230m payroll.
Imagine the irony of Bloom building up the farm and then another Dombrowski coming in and monetizing it and getting the credit, starting another vicious cycle. If you hire a Bloom approach, you just have to give him 5-7 years to show something. But do we and owners have the appetite? We’ll see.

FWIW- Sale has 2 years left at $22M per, Homer 3 years at $13M per. According to BTV (I know it has it's flaws), Hosmer's value is -35.2 and Sale is -32.3. They're pretty darn close there and Sale actually has some upside when healthy. If the Sox wanted to move Sale, they'd have to attach a pretty good prospect with him. Same with SD and the Padres probably need to move some money after these moves.

He's 13 mil the next 3 years, but the 18 mil AAV tax number (because of the front loaded nature of the deal) carries over, right? Minus whatever SD pays, of course.

It is genuinely very frustrating how allergic this front office seems to be to acquiring guys with any visible upside instead of cooked veterans and roster filler.

ETA: It's even more frustrating how awfully this season's roster was assembled that a guy like Hosmer is a genuine upgrade.

How about we occupy a space that criticizes different points of view (ideas) and legitimizes only those which are not either patently childish or off the deep end?

As you can see, there's plenty of content-free emotive posting.

And when you offer facts that try to talk them out of those tightly-clutched positions, they get all indignant because you're being a big meanie with your facts.
I hear you brother. Stick to the facts, and save the name-calling.

Early reports saying SD picking up most of Hosmer's remaining salary. Would have preferred the prospect given our financial flexibility, but not much to dislike given our woes at 1b

Hosmer has an OPS+ of 112 this year, and is a former gold glover - picking him up at minimal cost sounds like a nice little score
Yeah - his last three years are .273/.336/.411 with an OPS+ of 111. Good for 3.5 WAR. Not blowing anyone away but given our current production at 1B, seems like a good get. He's by all account a great clubhouse guy too, which seems important given the Vazquez trade.

He's also hitting .330 against LHP this year. Could be the strong side of a Franchy platoon?

Not to mention (ugh) Cordero. But I hope this means they ship Cordero back to Woostah, unless they need him to stand in RF b/c JBJ goes to the Phillies. And Dalbec is so much better as in IF than Cordero. There's no comparison, in my opinion.
This should spell the end of the Cordero in the infield experiment, yeah.

Hosmer has an ~.800ish OPS vs. LHP. If Dalbec is heading out (or even getting optioned), you could imagine a Hosmer/Casas platoon being a good way to work the kid in.

General consensus is his defense was always vastly overrated. I’m not expecting much of anything from him but I guess he’s at least better than Dalbec and not super expensive.

Of course it's more exciting to be a team like SD or even WAS today but honestly not sure what the complaining is about, particularly considering the picture may not be complete yet. The only good asset the Sox traded was a bit above average catcher who will be a FA in a few months and the Sox prob have a decent chance to sign him if they want. And, to me, the Astros prospects actually seem a bit exciting, notwithstanding their rankings (and many of you still harping on their pre-season rankings). The deadline kind of looks how I expected thus far--generally treading water in terms of competitiveness but adding some pieces that may allow for more flexibility over the next couple of seasons.

For those complaining Chaim does not have a plan, that seems fairly ridiculous. He may not have a plan you agree with but he certainly does not appear haphazardly running the team. For the complainers, did you want the Sox to go for it this year or go into a more fulsome rebuild? If the former, what guys that have been traded thus far did you think Sox should have been in on and who would you have offered? If the latter, there is obviously some time for this to happen (JD, Eovaldi at a minimum) but who do you want Chaim to trade away and what kind of return are you expecting? Or is everyone upset about the returns Chaim is getting (again, he has traded one useful piece)?

Hosmer is a LH 1b. The Sox best prospect is a LH 1b. Does this mean Casas gets moved or doesn’t play much in Boston this year, or what? Hosmer is surely an upgrade over what the Sox have but curious what the future plan is for him.

If San Diego is paying most, if not all, of Hosmer's salary then it's really easy to move him off the roster if/when Casas is ready.

3 hours from now, we can make judgements about this trade deadline. Until then, we should hold off on gathering pitchforks. I still think JDM and Eovaldi will be dealt. JBJ and Hill are still possibilities. We still don't know what, if anything, we gave up for Hosmer or if anything is coming to us with him.

If the Sox are done (they probably aren't) they're likely a slightly better team now than they were 24 hours ago and also improved the farm system. That seems like a decent overall deadline, with an outside shot at the playoffs as they start getting healthy.

The cradle of the game.
If anything, a dirt cheap Hosmer might be just piece needed to pair with JDM to get something larger done (with a team not listed on his NTC, of course). /wishcasting
