There is one guy on twitter saying his sign was taken but looking at his feed he seems a bit unhinged, other than that there are no reports that I have seen of this being an issue at all.

I'm also not sure who I'd be madder at - the Sox if they had been able to carry through with their "we won't announce anything until our caravan in January"...or whoever represented Orsillo when he signed his last agreement.     Why would anyone put their client in a position where their supervisors could keep them in limbo after the season ended like that?

That's fucking gutless and another example of NESN/ownership being totally and completely clueless to the public perception of what they're doing.  Good on Don for declining to play along.

NESN is like one of those terrible tourist trap restaurants that has mediocre, overpriced food and bad service but succeeds because it has a spectacular view. If it wasn't for their access to Red Sox broadcasts they'd be completely fucked. And because of the Sox they have little incentive to improve the rest of their shitty programming.

Listening to local sports radio here in San Diego. They were interviewing Ben Volin about #DFG but brought up the Orsillo situation at the end. Both Volin and the host said they heard that Orsillo may very well be coming to San Diego in some capacity next season.

Bingo. It's the Seaport (or perhaps the Newbury St) of TV channels.

I think that people are going too far in getting this upset about Orsillo leaving He is a fine announcer and I have always liked him but O'Brien is a fine announcer too (though his chemistry with Remy maybe wanting) Do people really need to protest with Orsillo signs in stands over this?

I would think after 15 years at company you would be treated a bit better. The fact that they were holding him to his Dec 31, 2015 contract so he was forced to do NESN RedSox Clubhouse off season crap, that may have prevented him from getting another gig is abhorent behavior by the powers at NESN.

ironic thing here is that this ownership group spent so much effort to build up the Pink Hat fanbase, and this is probably the first decision to really piss them off (aside from a losing baseball team)

years ago the "old school, hardcore" RS fans were alienated by the hijinks of Remsillo, so now it is just two-faced for NESN to argue that Obie has a more nuanced understanding of baseball to justify this move

This has been handled horribly, but even if the announcement had gone "smoothly"'or at least according to plan by NESN this winter, would it have been worth it? Is the PR backlash worth the upgrade from an A- announcer to an A announcer?

I think it's all based in how it's gone down more so than that Orsillo has been pushed out.  If it happens in the off-season per "the plan", it's probably a duel announcement of DOB moving to NESN from WEEI and DO moving from NESN to network X (be it another RSN or a national gig).  I think the outrage from the fanbase is mitigated greatly if the perception is less that Orsillo was given an unceremonious boot and more that he's moving on to bigger/better things.

Or maybe they're finally starting to worry about the hardcore fans getting frustrated with the pink-hat-centric product. That would be refreshing, but it would probably also be giving NESN way too much credit.

Gordon Edes' blog:

This continues to be a difficult time for NESN play-by-play broadcaster Don Orsillo, who has told friends that his lame-duck status in the booth makes showing up at the ballpark feel “like I’m going to my own funeral.”

But Orsillo has not let his feelings interfere with his work since NESN announced he would not be returning for a 16th season -- note his enthusiastic call of David Ortiz’s 500th home run Saturday night. And while the outpouring of support from his fans -- more than 60,000 signatures have been collected on an on-line petition -- will not alter NESN’s plans, multiple sources say that Orsillo’s prospects of landing another broadcasting job look very promising.

I feel so bad for Don. Can you imagine having to live in a hellhole like San Diego?

Who do we get in return for Orsillo??? That's the biggest question. I'm hoping for Ross or Cashner. If we send Remy can we get both?

Is Dick Enberg getting kicked to the curb here? I read reports that he still had 1 yr left on his contract?

He is 80 years old.  Have to imagine a significantly reduced schedule is in his immediate future regardless of whether Orsillo ends up there.

Announcement that Enberg will retire from Padres broadcasts next year jibes with what I've been hearing about Orsillo ending up there. (1/2)

Could be in a part-time role next year, then full-time  in '17. Would be a great get for Padres and nice landing spot for Orsillo. (2/2).

Former Red Sox executive Mike Dee is the Padres’ president and CEO. Orsillo has long had Dee’s respect, and Padres owner Ron Fowler is also said to be a fan. The downside to a move to the West Coast is a personal one. Orsillo has two daughters from a previous marriage, and he lives in Smithfield, R.I., now to be close to them.
According to Orsillo’s agent, Brad Blank, other franchises (one is believed to be the Dodgers) have shown interest in hiring the broadcaster. ESPN also has reached out. But the Padres possibility is the clear front-runner. A deal is unlikely to be official until around Oct. 4, when the Red Sox season ends and Orsillo can turn his attention toward considering the possibilities.
“Don has drawn a lot of interest, and San Diego has been incredibly gracious, but there are elements to any deal that still need to be sorted out,” said Blank. “We’re not popping the champagne bottles just yet.”

I really, really, really hope there is a loud "Don Orsillo" chant tomorrow. It will be his last game in Fenway as NESN broadcaster. He deserves it

That would be a great send-off for Don - I hope it happens too.

Which apparently isn't being shown on NESN.  I really hope that is only because they're saving the on-air recognition for his actual final game next weekend.  Otherwise...lame.

NESN showed the final moments of it; showed the big screen with Don waving to the crowd. Jerry mentioned folks chanting his name

Was at the game today and it was a great tribute and the park was chanting "Don Orsillo" pretty loudly afterwards. He looked pretty touched by the whole thing.

Orsillo did, according to sources, get an offer at the end of the last homestand to stay in the Red Sox family by joining WEEI’s radio booth to work with Castiglione. Included in the offer was a request to emcee some 40 offseason gigs at Fenway, work the phones to drum up advertising clients and accept a salary of approximately a third of what he was earning at NESN.

NESN picked quite a moment to try and make the case that they're independent of the Sox.

For an organization that is so image conscious this is a huge fuck up. The Red Sox still own NESN, yes? After the outpour of fan support for Orsillo why wouldn't the organization demand that NESN cover the tribute to D.O.? Then again the ownership group has a shaky history of treating folks with decency on the way out the door so why should an announcer matter?
