Shit is crazy. This happened last year to a commander’s player, right? Thank goodness he’s ok.

Not here
Man, for a second, I thought Jimmy Piersall got shot and I was prepping to play a game of tugwar in his honor.

It's conceivable that my brain might not work exactly to spec.

Jesus christ. I knew market was bad and I would never do shopping in Union Square but I never had the feeling getting shot was a possibility

It’s not bad there. Not at all. Stores have closed, others have opened. Gun violence sucks, but let’s not start a “I heard (major city X) is a ghost town and dangerous” thing in response to this.

Yes. I have walked around there plenty of times without problems.

I live in SF and its not entirely safe - but as with the other news stories that come out these days, lets await more details before rendering judgements. The early days of the whole unfortunate Bob Lee situation were used to push a political narrative - SF as a lawless cesspool - and we later learned it was a crime of passion, which isn't unique to any one spot on the planet.

That said, if the initial reports of Pearsall being held up for his watch are correct, that's a problem.

Edit: Here is an update.

The mother of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall said her son is “in good spirits” after a bullet ripped through his chest and out his back without damaging any vital organs.
Erin Pearsall shared the update on Facebook early Sunday, the morning after her 23-year-old son was shot by a suspect police described as a 17-year-old from Tracy in an armed robbery attempt in San Francisco’s Union Square.
The teenager was reportedly trying to steal Pearsall’s Rolex watch.

Yeah, well, I subscribe to Discovery+ through Amazon Prime and have been watching old Mythbusters episodes with my kids and I think SF looks great, so your lived experience is irrelevant in the face of this overwhelming documentary evidence.

I also live in the city and work on Market. Union Sq is def a little bit sketchy, but I’d compare it to Downton Crossing or that stretch of Tremont from Govt Center to Stuart. It’s not like the darkest days of Mass and Cass (you need to go to the Tenderloin for that, or at night that stretch of Market in front of All Star Cafe.)

There are definitely legitimate concerns about the crime here in San Francisco. This one smells to me like Pearsall was specifically targeted rather than just some kid spotted his watch. Like this kid from Tracy just drove 70 miles into the city to hang out in Union Square? He was probably part of a crew and they’d been tracking Pearsall for a while.

Shot in the chest! Damn….
CNN article
My wife saw this before I did and asked if I’d heard that the 49ers quarterback had been shot. I said “what, do you mean Mark Purdy!!!? She doesn’t follow sports like I do but reads a lot more overall so will sometimes run into something and not get the last detail. Anyway, shocking in any and all ways no matter what position he plays. Along the way, I learned that Pearsall went to Uinversities of Arizona and Fla, was selected 31st in the overall draft (because the 9ers lost to the MFChiefs) and that he is a white WR.

Hope he 100% recovers from this.

Amazing that a bullet can go through your chest without hitting any organs. Pretty darn lucky (aside from getting shot, or course)

Can they take the individual responsible and dump them in the water with the great whites out there? Might be the start of decent crime deterrent.

Either it went through the edge of his chest (outside the rib cage) or it went through his lung but didn’t hit a major vessel. In the latter case, still would have hit a major organ.

Given the fact he has already been discharged, probably was the edge of his chest and he just got super lucky. Not far from catastrophe either way.

Obviously a lot of details missing, but it would be amazing that a bullet could go through your lung without causing significant damage. As you said, most likely just was the edge of his chest outside the rib cage. Even then, doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of space there for anyone who is lean.

Not to sound unsympathetic, but just reporting...
(A) My son and grandson were in Union Square the prior day. He grew up in the city. Despite a few empty storefronts and (most noticeably to him) a visual police presence in front of the highest end shops... it was more vibrant and back to life than pre-covid.
(B) SF Firefighter friend shared with us that the player's message to the first responders was (to the effect of), "if I die, let' everyone know I didn't give up the watch."

There’s some video out now. It’s from a distance, but looks like he got hit pretty square in the chest (right side). So, it must have gone through his lung.

There have been a bunch of armed and often violent robberies of high-end watches in both LA and the Bay area over the last couple of years. The victims are often cased for a while before being held up. There was one at the Trader Joe's down the street from me involving an assault rifle a couple of years ago (they caught the perps pretty quickly). I seem to remember hearing at the time that there was evidence of many of the robberies being linked to a organized ring out of SoCal. But at any rate they were becoming frequent enough that I would assume most people would just leave their watches at home in the safe.

Everyone knows the proper place for a watch in a civilized society is in a safe, duh

Luckily he's okay, but can we agree.... trying to wrestle a gun away from someone rather than just handing over your watch is dumb for anyone, but particularly someone in line to make tens of millions of dollars?

Americans are evolving to the gun crisis.
