Sad to hear. I remember him well from the Impossible Dream Sox of 67 and he was very good defensively if I recall. Unfortunately, he couldn't hit, and neither could the other 3 catchers that year (Gibson, Tillman, Howard) and that was a big hole in the lineup. But whatev, he'll always be remembered for being part of that Dream team

I recall he was traded - after the 1967 season - to the Phillies where he played for six or seven more years. It opened up more playing time for Russ Gibson, who had spent ten years in the minors.
The Red Sox got veteran pitcher Dick Ellsworth - who had the misfortune to spend a good part of his career with the Cubs in some of their worst days. He had a very respectable 16-7 season in 1968; not bad for a guy who was 8-22 in '65..
I don't know if he ever came back to Fenway for special events. I think yes, the 100th anniversary (mrs. section15 seems to recall that he was here), but I do not recall him at the 40th and 50th anniversary of the 1967 team BoSox Club celebrations.
Yes, the Red Sox did give up on him, but it worked out better for all parties.
Quite a defensive catcher...He grew up not far from where I lived in Haverhill. He was the reason we had the radio broadcasts of the '67 World Series games piped through my grade schools PA on game days.
