They're music guys. That was their chosen career until they ended up in a sports talk show by an accident of fate. I think Rich has adapted well, but it's not his thing as far as a passion for analyzing it, like you say. Fred sounds like he played sports on a higher level than Rich as a kid and had a stronger interest in analyzing it. Either way I don't tune in to hear them talk about the Patriots options at strong safety for this weekend's game. I tune in for more Fart Court. Or in desperate hope that they find another Dating on Demand clip.
I love T&R because they remind me of my own group of friends from college. We're all big sports fans, but we're just as likely to yack for hours about music, TV, movies, chicks, farts, etc. I can't endure much of the rest of the Sports Hub lineup, because it's just hours and hours of uninterrupted sports takez. No one I know discusses sports that way, and I certainly wouldn't want to spend time with people who do.

Does Fred have to every single day spend 5 minutes on COVID restrictions are going to screw up the kids for decades diatribe? He’s been saying it for 18 months and I don’t disagree with a lot of it but it’s so tired and not entertaining. There’s rules that make no sense and are inconsistent. There’s also a lot of rules that make sense people don’t like.

Fred hates restrictions on kids and he wants his kids to do whatever they want, which is fine. Him bitching about it constantly seems like he just wants to justify his own actions. I don’t give a shit what Milo’s basketball team is doing around masks and don’t need a segment daily on it.

This is a very succinct summation of sports radio. Imagine if you were friends Jim Murray? You'd tell him to pound sand in five minutes. Felger would get annoying, Zolak would probably drive you to slam knitting needles into your ears. Mazz and Beetle might be okay. Hardy would be a bunch of fun, I bet.

I know that this isn't the way these guys act "in real life" and they're amped up, but why? Why do they feel the need to act this way? It's not entertaining, it's forced and frankly, boring.

Hardy, Keefe and Arcand all seem like actual normal humans I'd like hanging out with.

I forgot about those other two but they're cool.

I remember Ordway always used to say that the Big Show was like being at a bar with your friends, and I get what he was trying to say but if my friends acted like sports talk radio hosts, I'd throw myself in front of a fucking train.

They do what they need to do in order to get ratings.

T&R had a segment on this like 9-10 years ago mocking Ordway saying his listeners would love to sit at a bar and smoke cigars or some nonsense which was hilarious. I'm guessing this is what you're referring to.

Maybe indirectly. There was a piece done about Ordway 10-15 years ago when the Big Show was huge and sports radio was really making a dent in the ratings (so maybe it was longer ago). The writer presumably asked Ordway why his show was such a success and he said something about how he and his cronies were like being at a bar with your friends and talking sports.

Which was true, I guess. But it was also really done and I would be perfect fodder for T&R. They hate phonies like Ordway and his dufus agro-male crew. I bet it was hilarious.

What’s interesting is that the first Boston sports radio show I listened to — the Sunday Night Sports Huddle - was supposed to have started because a radio exec overheard Eddie Andleman, Jim McCarthy and Mark Witkin talking sports in a bar. And when I was listening to the show as a kid in the 80s, it came across as just that - likable, entertaining guys.

The current crew aside from T&R are so douchey I’d run screaming from that bar. At least I could talk about 90s R&B with Wallach.

This week in social media (TWISM) and in case you missed it are great segments similar to T&R but led by Arcand on the Jones podcast. Jones trolling is unlistenable but these not sports segments are very good. They are standalone 15 min podcast segments so you can ignore every thing else.

Given what an unlistenable and cranky know-it-all Andelman became, it's hard to convey how funny and irreverent The Sports Huddle was in its '70s heyday. In a weird way, they were a lot like T&R. They took sports seriously--but not too seriously. They called Buckingham Palace every year (IIRC) to get the Queen's Super Bowl picks. The pro wrestling manager The Grand Wizard (who only managed villains) was a regular guest--whom they treated with a seriousness and respect normally reserved for someone like Warren Buffett or Tim Cook. The GW played right along, and it was hysterically funny.

Fred in ALL his anti-Pats bashing schadenfreude glory today with Adam Jones of all people as his side kick fueling the fire. This must have been his favorite show to do in months.

Nobody really bit on any of Fred’s anti-Pats takes, not even Jones. Fred was trying so hard to get Andrew Callahan from the Herald to agree with him. Callahan politely disagreed or offered more sane/relevant explanations on various topics. Fred’s going to do this the rest of the week until he gets someone to agree with him.

I wouldn’t let Jones off the hook. At one point he talked himself into trading Bill Belichick for a draft pick while admitting he had no idea who should replace him in that scenario lol

Yep. Rich has it and Fred’s family has it. IIRC they opened the show talking about it yesterday.
Yeah it was the first break of yesterday’s show. Rich and both of his sons have it (or had. Pretty sure at least one of them should be out of the water by now), and Fred’s son had tested positive but none of the rest of the family had it. He’s broadcasting from home as a close-contact

Dying at the Verducci video they played this morning, re: the HOF. I love how they hold these sportswriters to task for this shit. Also, the Heyman clips they played before where he talked about not voting in guys based on PEDs and then trying to rationalize why he was still voting for Bonds was equally amazing.

Really disappointed with these guys this morning on the whole Brady retirement thing. First of all, they again are citing Ted Johnson (of all people) saying that he has it on good authority that Kraft flipped out and threw a 'temper tantrum' when he saw Brady's instagram post. No axe to grind at all on the part of Ted, right? Kraft threw such a temper tantrum that someone that close to him told Ted about it? Highly doubt that.

Next, Fred said that he received "dozens of emails" from Pats fans talking about how upset they were that Brady didn't thank them in his message. Umm ok. Just that on face value sounds a little farfetched. He then goes on to say it was 'mean' that Brady didn't thank Pats fans. This from the guy who has done nothing but bash Brady, the Pats, and its fans for 15+ years, all of a sudden he cares about the fans not being thanked? The whole thing just came off as total schtick to me, Fred isn't someone who would EVER care about a friggin Instagram post before. I honestly thought they'd spend a few minutes on it and laugh at how some people were getting annoyed, but he was actually saying that anyone that doesn't say their angry is 100% wrong, they're not telling the truth, etc. etc. etc. He also said it wasn't a good business move because by not thanking Pats fans it's somehow going to affect his TB12 and other businesses in the region. Really, really odd takes.

The whole thing just came across as him trying to be like 'see, I was right about him all this time!' It was SO forced. And then Rich is just giggling the entire time, talking about how 'awesome' the entire thing is.

It was also ridiculous that they used BB not publicly responding to the news of Brady's retirement--as he did when Edelman, Ninkovich, Peyton Manning, and others hung it up--as incontrovertible evidence that Brady and Belichick hate each other.

I don't know about the other stuff, but my social media feed was filled with people pissed off that Brady didn't say anything about the NE fans, the organization, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if Fred did get dozens of emails about this.

I don't care, but other people really do.

Good post. That had to have been the worst radio I have ever heard from these guys. And I don't even think it was shtick on Fred's part. He truly despises Brady (and the Pats of course) and just let it all hang out today in a real hostile and malicious tone. I had to just turn it off and probably won't tune back in for the rest of the week.

Same, many of my pals were upset by the Pats omission in Brady's statement.

And I found T&R's takes highly entertaining this morning.

Agreed on both fronts. This forum is the only place in the last 24+ hours I haven't seen an overwhelming majority of people upset/disappointed with the statement. Discussions with friends, Facebook, family...a lot of comments about disappointment.

My point when I was talking about Fred from this morning was that, yes, I am friends with plenty of people on social media who are upset (to say the least) about the Brady thing. What I expected from the show this morning was for them to laugh at those types of reactions. 'It's just a stupid Instagram post!' 'Who cares?!' 'He thanked you two years ago!' 'Get on with your lives', which, to me, is way more of a Fred type of rant, than the 'Tom Brady is mean' and 'how dare he not thank the fans!' one that he went with instead.

Anyone listen to the show at around 8am today? Fred revealed something pretty alarming: apparently some listener got a hold of his wife’s cell phone and has been sending her harassing texts and calls for months! He somehow figured out who it was and is now contemplating what to do. Talk about creepy!

I didn't hear it live, but that's beyond frightening. Hopefully he decides to involve the cops- I wouldn't mess around with a psycho willing to do that.

He mentioned it pretty casually and it clearly took Rich and Wallach by surprise. Sounds like the guy called from his home landline last night, forgot to mask the call, and Fred saw his info on caller ID.

Kinda shocked that he and his wife haven't gone to the cops, since its been going on for quite a while.

I can’t believe Fred was that casual about it. I’d have been pissed and freaked out the second time it happened and have been annoyed after the first.

There was one guy on their Twitch channel who’d constantly talk about Stephanie banging her trainer and how she was on Tinder when Fred was in rehab to a point it was awkward and off putting. Wonder if it’s him.

In other news, I've been meaning to get to Jamie's for awhile and was actually talking to someone about that on Thursday last week. I have to get there this week.

Fred contradicted himself several times talking about this Stafford thing with the photographer falling off the stage. It’s not even that Stafford walked away, but his first reaction was to walk away. Fred said his wife was taking care of it but Stafford saw it happen first and walked away before she even reacted to it
