They were talking about how Bay was unlikely to come back, then Rich brought up Holliday and they all laughed. The conversation was, essentially:
"Oh, another Boras client, and here is a team that completely missed on another Boras outfielder." (implying Drew of course)
"Do you really want two Boras clients as your corner outfielders?"
"And can you imagine what kind of shape Ellsbury would be between those guys?"
"Haha his tongue qould be hanging out making up for their lousy defense."
"But at least Ellsbury is the guy you want playing between those two stiffs."
OK, so nevermind that Bay was one of the worst defensive LF in the league, that Holliday is thought to be much better, and that Drew was by most accounts spectacular as a defensive player in 09, throw in a little overrating of Ellsbury, and top it off with evaluating players based on the fact that they are represented by Boras.
I get that a lot of average baseball fans think Drew's contract makes him a bad player (I did not misspeak, I really think that is how people make the evaluation), I just wish at least one guy could point out that he's not as bad as they were saying. And, I also get that people don't really understand defense, but anyone who watched more than the sportscenter highlights of the Red Sox should be able to tell that Bay was not very good. Implying that going from Bay to Holliday is a huge defensive donwgrade was too much for me.
They also talked like the intention of the Lowell deal was to have VMart play 1B and have Ramirez and Varitek catch while Youks moves to third. Wallach mentioned Beltre and they scoffed at his HR totals.
Full disclosure, after the defense thing I switched to my ipod, so they may have been stirring the pot and then brought in better analysis later.
Yeah...that's pretty standard. Fred is a Cardinals fan, and hates Holliday singularly based on his error in the playoffs.
Which also puts him firmly in the anti-Drew camp, being a Cardinals fan and having read Three Nights in August.
Baseball is probably their weakest sport, and Wallach doesn't make it a whole lot better. Unfortunately, things like the Granderson stuff yesterday are diamonds in shitmounds.
