Completely uninspired choice, but he's a seat warmer. So pretty much par for the course with this team.

This is a smart move. So much has been up in the air, that I'd guess the players appreciate a degree of continuity.

Pending a clean bill from MLB on Roenicke re the sign-stealing stuff, (and I'm assuming the Sox got a heads up) with so many moving parts to the 2020 Sox, Roenicke made the most sense.

Based on their recent track record, I fully expect them to get completely blind sided by the results of the investigation when it's revealed that Roenike had a cybernetic eye installed which he used to control a fleet of sign stealing micro-drones.

Dude, you were told that in secrecy. Now the next manager will probably be the winner of the Boston Marathon.

Just quoting you for posterity. Because you're likely correct.

This is probably the best move under the circumstances. Barring an unexpected 'Morgan Magic'-like run, they can move on at the end of the season and bring in Bloom's choice as a long-term guy and let him staff the coaching positions. The 2020 season is hardly going to be successful or not because Roenicke is the manager.

Yep. If they think that Cora's getting a one or two year suspension, and they want him back, Roenicke's the best fit. It's not as though he had any other expectations of a better job this year

A deep solemn bow to you, sir.

I like the move. Continuity in this case is good.

This certainly suggests that any MLB sanctions against the Red Sox won’t be severe, so that’s good news.

If the cheating in Houston hadn’t happened, I think we’d all be happy with Cora as the manager, so if the Red Sox’ missteps were not serious, an inside hire makes sense. I don’t think we know enough about clubhouse dynamics to say whether Roenicke is the right internal hire, but everything I’ve read suggests that the people who do know think he was the logical choice.

Based on my observations over many years of being a baseball fan, having good players seems to be more important than who the manager is. Joe Torre was a great manager with the Yankees and a terrible one with the Mets.

Roenick will have no control over who will be healthy or will play well. Sale might be an ace or be injured all year and that will have nothing to do with Roenick.

I look at him as better than Dusty Baker. They were not going to get their manager of the future this offseason, so it's the least disruptive outcome. Even if he overperforms, I'm not too worried that the Sox will feel compelled to hand over the reigns long term unless they win the World Series or something.

Update from MLBTR:
10:57am: Adding another layer of intrigue, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that the Red Sox also interviewed former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons earlier this week. Gibbons interviewed with the Astros before they hired Dusty Baker as well.

10:47am: The Red Sox issued the following statement in response to the report regarding Roenicke (Twitter link via MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo): “Our managerial search is not yet completed. We will comment at the completion of the search.”

That, of course, doesn’t mean that Roenicke won’t ultimately be named manager, although it’s nevertheless notable that the team felt compelled to issue a statement without being prompted.

Gibbons ??????????? He would be the ultimate placeholder . The very definition of a JAG manager.

So I guess that Roenicke will be the interim manager until the all star game in 2021?

I like Baldelli, but I hope he's not the last piece in the Betts deal coming to make up for Brusdar's health issues.

Roenicke this year with 'Tek (hopefully) as the bench coach being groomed for next season. I can easily live with this, especially with all of the other drama we've had this offseason. Just wish they had been able to wrap it up sooner.

I guess I'm a little skeptical he could have been completely oblivious to the cheating. The manager knew, and the players had to know (at least some of them). He had no idea?

I’d be more concerned if he didn’t know than if he did.

Again, I’m interpreting this news as a sign that the Sox are going to get a slap on the wrist.

Assuming he's not penalized in the investigation, and the time in the baseball calendar they found themselves looking for a manager, he's as good a place holder as you could hope for. Either bring Cora back, if eligible, and or begin the search for a long term replacement next off season.

Yeah! They really had no other realistic options this close to spring training. The optimist in me wants this team to go on a run but the realist in me really thinks this year is going to be a wash given all the issues around this team! I just hope we don’t get hit hard with draft pick penalties from the investigation and we can retool quickly!

Given the reports yesterday that MLB's punishment of the Red Sox may be 'light', *and* that the Astros sign-stealing operation was far more if an organization-wide operation than previously believed, I can't help but wonder if Cora's punishment is going to be also lighter than previously thought, and that Roenicke will be the placeholder until the Red Sox can reinstate Cora, maybe even during the 2020 season.

Is this a serious question?

It's a few years old now, but this article covers it pretty well. Then there's this one from last spring.
"Terry, if the end of the world comes tomorrow, how good is it to exit with a victory tonight?" Miller asked. "

"I've got to tell you, Jon, if it ends tomorrow, I'm not gonna be that happy," Francona said. "I mean, I'm glad we won, but I would prefer it not to end."
Awesome
Thanks, RHF.

It would be very cool if Cora can come back. The new info that he wasn't the mastermind behind the system should help. Probably not happening in 2020 though.

Unlikely he'll ever come back, though I had similar thoughts. No matter what comes out, to the uninformed casual fanbase he is always going to be the mastermind of the cheatin' Astros and even MLB telling the Sox to put a quarter in the bad sportsmanship jar (which sounds to be about as harsh a penalty as the team is going to incur based on recent reports) is still going to cause a lot of fans (smart or otherwise) to discount the 2018 successes as nothing more than the result of Patriots-esque cheating (i.e., being better at identifying things to exploit thanks to tireless video review, to the point where it has to be cheating since no one else can seem to figure out how to have the same success by being honest), which is already happening despite MLB telling everyone to pump the brakes. Bringing him back, even mostly exonerated from a Boston perspective will still send the message that the organization may be complicit in unseemly activities. There was talk of him being moved to a front office role at some point and it wouldn't shock me if that happens. Will he never manage again? Tough to say, but it seems unlikely he'll manage this year or next at the very least.
